## **Redhill Sinfonia**

## **Trustees’ Annual Report for the year-ended 31[st] July 2025**

Reference and administration details

The Redhill Sinfonia (“RS”) is a registered charity, number 263495 whose principal address is: 1B Hitherwood Close Reigate RH2 2JJ

The charity’s trustees, all of whom were involved in managing the charity were: Alex Sturt (Chairman – reached end of term October 2025) Sarah Lewis (Chairman – appointed October 2025) Carolyn Wing (Secretary) Kathryn Neumann (Treasurer) Jo Anderson Louisa Orton Andrew Proudfoot

## **Structure, governance and management**

RS is a charity constituted by association and governed by a constitution last revised on 17[th] October 2017. The trustees are appointed or reappointed for a period of 3 years at the Annual General Meeting. All trustees give their time voluntarily and receive no remuneration or other financial benefit from the orchestra. Expenses are reimbursed when these are incurred wholly and necessarily for the purposes of promoting the objectives of the orchestra and its concerts, and must be verified by appropriate receipts as far as possible.

RS is a member of Making Music, the National Federation of Music Societies.

## **Objectives and activities (Public Benefit Statement)**

The objects of the orchestra are the promotion, preparation and performance of classical music for the enjoyment and education of members and audiences in the Reigate and Redhill area.

We believe our activities make a substantial contribution to the public benefit, particularly in the following areas:

 the public has an opportunity to enjoy classical orchestral music performed to a high standard at local venues on a regular basis.

 the orchestra actively seeks collaboration with other local groups and encourages the work of local contemporary composers.

 opportunities to rehearse and perform concertos are given to up-and-coming young soloists and more established performers.

 membership of the orchestra is open to anyone who plays a required instrument to an appropriate standard and subject to the availability of places. Members under 18 or in full-time education also benefit from a substantially reduced subscription.

## **Achievements during the year**

Under the leadership of conductor John Beswick, the orchestra promoted and performed three concerts and a Winter Workshop in Redhill during the 2024-2025 season.

## **Concert November 2024, Reigate Park Church**

Florence Price: Symphony No. 1 Dvorak: Symphony No. 9 ("From the New World") This concert, with an American flavour, allowed us to champion the work of the African-American composer Florence Price and her rarely heard 1[st] symphony. This work perfectly combines the traditional elements of African-American music (particularly in the exuberant Kuba Dance) alongside influences of classical composers, including echoes of the works of Dvořák.

## **Open day Workshop, January 2025, Reigate Park Church**

Bruckner: Symphony no 9

## **Concert March 2025, Reigate Park Church**

Marquez Danzon No 2 Liebermann: Piccolo concerto op. 50 (soloist Florence Eaglestone) Shostakovich: Symphony no 5

We are proud that in our 2024 – 25 season we have continued to support young musicians at the start of their careers. The talented 15-year-old piccolo player Florence Eaglestone, deserved winner of the Reigate and Redhill Festival Concert Competition who performed the Leibermann piccolo Concerto. Both the orchestra and the audience were impressed with her enchanting playing and her mature interpretation of this little-known work.

## **Concert July 2025, St John’s Church Redhill (new venue for the orchestra)**

Mozart: Piano concerto no. 20 in D minor (Surrey soloist Nadine André) Schubert: Symphony no. 9 ‘Great C major’

Our summer concert featured two masterpieces from the classical era, with Mozart’s stormy piano concerto no. 20 in D minor in the first half, and Schubert’s epic Symphony no. 9 (The Great) in the second.

## **Financial Review**

The orchestra’s accounts show the financial performance and position of the orchestra, including a concert-by-concert breakdown of its income and expenditure.

The finances of the orchestra are in a healthy position. The orchestra’s standing at the end of the financial year in July can be seen in the line TOTAL FUNDS. This year, we ended up with just over £39k; an increase of a little under £10 000. £6800 of this is from a generous bequest we received from the estate of James MacCarthy who was a longtime supporter of the orchestra. We are now in contract with a local composer to produce an orchestral work for us by July 2026 The remaining £2500 comes from prudent budgeting, increased ticket sales (+£900) then a saving of £300 St John’s, increased gift aid (£200) and interest (£200). Donations across the year have increased slightly. Part of this is the success of the Winter Workshop.

Our reserves are now higher than they should be according to our **reserves policy** – but we have accrued for: the composition; additional costs associated with our planned legacy concert; two concerts at the Harlequin theatre (due to reopen in 2027)

_The accounts may be obtained by writing to the treasurer at the charity’s registered office._

_The orchestra’s reserves policy is at any time to carry reserves which would allow it to survive for one year without the benefit of membership subscriptions or donations from patrons or other sources – based on the average of the previous 3 years._

## **Declaration**

The trustees declare that they have approved the trustees’ report as set out above. Sarah Lewis
