Over the last year, the Oral Health Foundation has created the
framework of its new strategy.

Helplng people to Improve their oral health Is ot rhe very heart of what we do. That's because
when people hove a healthy mouth, their Ilves chonge for the betrer.
The good news is that many oral diseases are almost entirely preventable- which meon5 0
solution to erodicote them is in our own honds. Ihis might mean providing informotion to help
people look after their mouths or motlvating them by communlcating the beneflts of hovlng
good oral health. It could even mean supporting those without the ability or meons to care for
their oral health, for who oral disease is far more likely. We are determlned to help everyone.

to chonge, we wlll invest our resources to toke the lead In odvocotbng for evldence-lnformed
oral heolth pollcles.
To create o heolthler future for the publlc, we wlll champion Inltlotives and actions wlth
pollcymakers, to ralse tr)elr awa￿ ness of change5 required to bring about slgnificant
improvements to orol heolth. Influenclng motters of policy wlll be ot the cornerstone of our
chority's work. By uslng the latest ond strongest scientlf ic re5eorch, alongside o sustoined
ond targeted approach, our campalgning can influence policymokers to enact meosures that
can really moke a difference.

The 48th annual National Smile Month took place
from 13 May to 13 June 2024, under the inspiring
theme of 'love your smile,.
Thls year, the campoign focused on promotlng the beneflts of o healthy smlle and the
Importonce of conslslent oral hyglene, bolanced food and drlnk cholces, ond uslng the righr
oral care products. It also hlghllghted the connectSon between a smile, confldernce, and
wellbelngl whlle oddresslng the diseoses ond condltlons that can Impact oral heolth,
Our launch event at the Foundling Museum in London saw an impressive turnout,
with attendees Includlng sponsors, clients, retoilers, dental professlonals, government
deportmenrs, locol ourhorltles, medlo, ond compalgn supporters. Thls evenr set the tone for o
successful and impactful campaign.
Campalgn achlevements
This year's campaign saw the introduction of13 new special campaign products, resulting
n the sale of over 68,000 Items. This generated over £IOk in proflt, whlch wlll fund our
ongoing work and octlvirles. Thousornds of posters, pens, bodges, ond brushlng charts were
dlstributed, ono over 8,000 Smlleys, balloons, and stSckers reached clental practices, NHS
trusts, community dentol services, nurserles, schools, and care home5.
Natlonal Smlle Month 2024 also sow hundreds of oral heolth events across the UK, engoglng

an estimated six million people. Activities
ranged from brushing demonstrotions and
assembly talks in schoo5s to comprehensive
events In local communities and hospitals,
like Whittirngton Hospital. Our Great Brltlsh
Brushathon and the new Tooth Fairy
competition were partlcularly well recelved,
wlrh over 300 entrSes from schools, nurserles,
and chlldminders.

Medla and public engagement
The campalgn's medla presence was
substantial, with over100 articles in prir)t
and onllne media, reachlng a clrculotion of
neorly 260 mllllon. Thls coverooe, valued oc over £2.4 mlllion, slgnlficanrly roised the proflle of
oral health. We olso conducted a publlc survey of more than 2,000 UK adults, whlch revealed
valuable insights Into oral health behaviours ond informed our medlo octivitles.
Our broodcost dayi led by Mlrondo Steeples from the Brltlsh Soclery of t)entol Hyglene and
Theropy, reached an oudlence of over 3.3 mlllion people through 116 radio stations. The National
Smile Month weL)slte recelved 65,000 vlews, and our soclal medla efforts saw rhousonds
engaglng wlth campolgn posts uslng #smllemonth and #mysmlley5elfie.
Innovatlve Inltlatlves
Thls year, we launched the Tooth Falry competitlon ro engoge young chlldren In Notlonol Smlle
Month, resultlng In over 300 entrles. Our oral heolth podcast was downloaded over 250 times,
and our compo5gn vldeos gornered over 53,000 views with more thun 900 hours watched.
Notlonol Smlle Mor)rh 2024 also ochleved remarkoble success In publlc engagement and medla
coverage. We are grateful for the support from our sponsors, partlclpants, and Ihe communltv,
whlch mode the compoSgn posslble.

Whlle most cancers ore decllnlng In number, we contlnue to see a rise In mouth cancer. We
estlmate that there are10,825 people newly dSagnosed cases In the UK - o staggerlng133%
Increose over the lost 20 years. There's never been a more presslng time to boost oworeness
and foster early detection. Early dlagnosls slgnlficantly improves outcomes, yet over half of
all coses ore discovered ot an advonced stage. By Improvlng publlc knowledge, we Increase
the chances of spotting slgns sooner, when treatment options ore more effective.
Increased medla exposure and communlty involvement
Last yeor, the compaign golned over 600 pleces of medio coverage, Includlr)g high-profile
exclusives wlth BBC and ITV, ond slgnlficant presence In molor UK outlers like the Dolly Mall,

Compaign moterlols reached more than 15,000 waiting rooms across dental practices,
h05PitL)Is, GP surgeries, and phormocles, bringlng vltal informatlon to thousands of patlenrs.
More thon 20,000 campaign products were shared with orgonisations to educate the
public on spottlr)g early warning signs, and even the Armed Forces ployed a role, dlstrlbutlng
campolgn packs to their dental centres. The iconic Blue Ribbon Badge continues to be a
conversation starrer, with over 1,500 new bodges sold last year alone, adding to the 250,000
already worn by supporters nationwide.
A growlng dlgital presence and valuable resources
Dlgiral engagement also reached new heights, wlth more thon 75,000 people vlsitlng the
compalgn webslte, ar)d soclal medla posts estlmated to hove reached over 200,000 people.
Campoign vldeos were wotched by over100,000 indlvlduals, and thousonds tuned into our
podcast 5erles. Our State of Mouth Cancer Report, downloaded by 2,500 usersi presented
updoted cllnlcal dara and oworeness stotlstlcs, further hlghllghtlng the Importonce of early
diagnosls and rlsk reductlon.
Maklng a measurable dlfference In mouth cancer referrals
Data we retrieved from more than 80 NHS Trusts reveals that mouth car)cer referrals rlse bv
an averoge of13% each November, and In some cases, referrals Increase by as much as 27%
durlng Mouth Cancer Action Month. This suggests that the campaign's awarer)ess efforts
moy directly contrlbure to more tlmely referrals and potentlolSy Improved outcomes for those
affected. It also supports onecdotal evldence we hove heard from mouth cancer survlvors,
who clolm thelr cancer was spotted by their dentlst as part of on awareness drive clurlng
November's campalgn.
A call to contlnue the support
The continued success of Mouth Cancer Action Month would not be pos51ble without the
support of our partners, Portmon-Denrex and the Mouth Concer Foundatlon. The campcjign
also received a generous donation from Slmplyhealth. With the continued commltment of
these and other orgonlsotlons, we con extend our reach ond contlnue moklng o difference In

The consequences of DIY and unregulated dental treatments are severe. Common
complications include bone and tooth Iossi jaw issues, and gum recession, all of which can

Our reseorch found that, on overage, people spend £1,500 to correct DIV treotments that go
wrong. Shockinglyi 15Vo of UK households have even tried filling cavities or extractSng teeth
themselves- an unsustobnoble trend Ihot underscores the urgency for better awareness.

In the UL we've remalned actively engaged In dlscusslons about the future of oral health. A
key focus this year has been oddressing the ongolng chollenges surrounding the accesslbllltv
and affordoblllty of NHS dental servlces, Issues we hove long highlighted. We are continulng
to odvocote for much-needed reforms in this oreo, worklng closely wlth our porrners and kev
stakeholders to drive meaningful change.
We've also malniolned our stance on pollcles reloted to sugar and smoklng, both of whlch rlave
a direct Impact on oral health. As voplng contlnues to rise in popularltvi we've been recelvlng
more Inquirbes obout its effects on oral healrh. While evldence shows vaping Is a less harmful
alternotlve to smoklng, we're colling for further research to better understand Its long-term
impact on the mouth.
Worklng wlth partners for a heolthler future
Our portnershlps contlnue to expand, partlcularly wlth the Chlldren's Food Worklng Group and
Sustain. This yeor, we've used our platform to odvocote for the Soft Drinks Industry Levy to fund
oral health preventlon and promotlon efforts. As port of our ongoing work wlth Sustaln, we have
been preparlng to present our case to the Treosury aheod of the Autumn Budget, urglng for

The flnanclal statemenrs have been prepared under the hlstorlcal cost conventlon apart

Act 2006 and Che Statement of Recommended Proctlce'Accounilng and Reportlng bv
