advancement of animal welfare and suppon of people who no longer able to car¢ for iheir pels.
The main focus of our actlVLties coniinues to be that of ensuring we provide a rehoming cenire and sanctuary for
lh¢ cals and kitt¢n5. which iheir owner5 are unable 10 care for. and for those which are broughi to us by other
ag¢n¢ic5. or by members of the public as strays. We are the largesi rescue organisaiion caiering for catg only in
East and South Kent and we are willing io lake cais of any age or condiiion. No cat is ever pui io sleep unless
the veis advise ihai he or she no longer enjoys any prospeci of a reasonable quality of life.

The sanctuary care5 for up 10 200 ¢?15 and kittens ai any one lime. There are three separate enclosures. Ihe first
located behind the bungalow and ¢omprising the rehoming centre with 31 reception pens and coinmunal areas
a¢¢ommodating cais suitable for rehomin8. Across ihe road on Long Piece Field is ihe sanctuary known as
Magpie House which accommodaies up 10 60 cais which by reason of their iemperamenis are unhomeable and
will live oui their lives here. A ihird enclosure accommodaies Ihose cats which have iesied posiiive for FIV
(Feline Immunodeficiency Virus) and could be homed. bui only where ihey have no Con￿¢1 wilh other cats.
EveNhing is done to mainlain an environmen¢ where all lhe ¢ots will have $iimulaiion. an active ouidoor life
and coniaci wilh staff and visifor5. A v¢lerinJry surgeon visils the Sanctuary once a week io ¢heck Thew a￿1val$
and attend to cases which do not r¢quir¢ imrn¢diat¢ treatment. In nomial times ihe Sanctuary is open to visitors
wiihout prior appointment from 10am to I pm and 2pm to 4pm seven days a week excepi over Chrisimas and
New Year.

Our 2023 Open Day, Christmas Fair and quiz nighis rdised £8,717. a declin¢ on last yetrs totals. d¢spite the
Open Day attracting ihe largesi crowd we have ever known ai Seaihwaiie.
Our aciiviiies were restricied during ihe laller part of 2023 by an ouibreak of rin8wornI in ihe kittery. introduced
by kittens we look from another source. This necessithied a ihree-monih closure or the kir¢ery and a major
deep clean and refvrbishmeni carried oui by our siaff. The killery is now fully operdiional again.
Our activity level has increased during the pasi year alihough noi yei fully reiurned io prevcovid levels. Every
cai we rehome 15 checked by our veis, neulered or spayed, iesled for FIVIFELV ViTuses. vaccinaied and
microchipped. If cats require velerinary treatment. often denthls. Ihis is done before rehorning. We estimate ihat
each rehomed cal costs an averdge of between £320-£400 to achieve our standard5 before he or she goes io
new owTJ¢r. We #r¢ grat¢ful for ihe number of visitors to our sanctlhary and the on-80ing sUPPQrt froin donors
and l¢ga¢ies. We are proud ihat we are able 10 welcome visiiors every doy wiihoui appointment io see ihe ¢als
enjoying a lar8¢ measur¢ of freedom in our spacious enclosures.

remains small. and there is a ¢onsid¢rabl¢ polenlial liability for repair5 to the ouidaied shared building of which
the shop forms part.

need another pair of hands in the near fuiure.

repairs and mainienance 15 now necessary. Thal will include 8 new shower and washroom for the managers and
additional ihennal ansulation in the bungalow. new fittings. shelving and re.iiling in ihe cai's kiichen and
laundry. and a new septtc tank and ireaimeni plant to service ihai building. This projected expendiiure could
reach a six-figure sum.
0 Wages will continue to rise following the implemeniaiion of the new minimum wage. Our veterinary c051s
have doubled in the pasi year. Lighting and healing costs have increased by 410/•. Our activilies general¢ a
considerable amount of waste and disposal c051s increa5¢ yepr by year.
¥) In the light of ihese factors the trustees consider the present cash and investsneni reserves. representing
approximaiely 12 years outgoings. necessary to safeguard the sanctuary's future. Ai preseni 44/0 of those
reserves are held in rash dep051ts and 56Q/D in funds managed specificall), for chariiies and in equiiies derived
from previous bequests. The trusiees will continue io opi for a very low risk investment strategy.

bookkeeprng is carried out by Mrs Kaiie Clarke of CLIC Bi)okkeeping. The trusiees meet regularly during the
year. in addition, Mrs Diana Taylor visits monihly. Th¢ sponsorship scheme for resident cats is admini51er¢d in
house by sanctuary staff.
A boarding callery business is a150 run on premises ai Seaihwaite, all profits frorn which are covenanied to
SUPPOrt the sancruary. li is operaied ihrough a separate trading compan},. Seathwaiie Boarding Callery Lid
(Company Regisiraiion No. 034235961. The premises are licensed under the Animal Breeding and Boarding
Establishments Act by Folkeslone and H￿he Districi Council io board 120 cttis. and there are ai preseni 32
single and 20 double and treble p¢ns. each with individual chalds.
The directors of the Ix>arding cartery company are currenily ofthe iruS￿s. namely Mr C Russell and Mr M
Whibley. The oiher two direciors are Miss T Jell and Mis5 C Jell. Each direcior is also a shareholdeT Wlth 25
shares each. The customers ofihe Ix)ardin8 cattery includ¢ many of ihe people who have re-homed cats froin the
sanctuary. The gross receipts for ihe year ¢nd¢d 31 51 December ?0?3 were £70.007 (2022 - £66.0571. The
acliviti¢s of ihe boarding canery are M)t included in ihe accounts ofihe charity.
The charity also runs a charity shop selling primarily donaicd goods under the Irading Ttame of The Cai Basket
t 16A Cheriion Place, Folkesione. The shops managers are Mrs Jennifer Campb¢ll and Mrs Susan Peake who
each work I 112 days a week and are ¥ssisied by a roia of voluntary helper5. All profits from Ihe shop go io ihe
chariry, which were for the year £9.93412022- £6.965).
