REVIEW OF AcnvmES The Stanley Smith {UK) Horticuttural Trust was set up in 1970 vAth the express purpose of furthering the development of the art and suen¢e of hO￿.¢￿ItuTe by means of grants pa￿ out of the dividends from the investment of the inth.al money PFuvide<J by the founder {Mrs Barbara de Brye vkno Vfd5 the daughter of Stanley Smith). The intention of these grants, as defined by the Founder and the first Director. Sir George Taylor FRS, was to improve the qualty of hortKuliure in all possible vrays. Behind this stands the idea of improving horticulture for the public generally, and this was and continues to be the main guiding prinaple of the Trusfs adivrties. The Trust's procedures V￿re laid down at the beginning.. the Director remews grant applications received before the fv40 annual deadlines {15 February and 15 August) and presents the details of el¢gible applicatsons in a report lo the Trustees. The Trustees then apportion grants according to the views of the Director las modthed by the Trustees, as approprialel. and the cash available at the time.
