## **GOVERNING DOCUMENT and OBJECTS of the SOCIETY** 

The Governing Document of the Society is “The Rules of the Orchid Society of Great Britain”. Resolutions for the alteration of these Rules must be passed by a two-thirds majority of those present and voting at the Annual General Meeting of the Society which is normally held on the first Saturday of June. 

The object of the Society shall be the furtherance of the knowledge of orchidaceous plants by encouraging the cultivation of these plants, gathering and disseminating particulars of their cultivation, the holding of meetings and shows and, in other ways and in general, to undertake any activities that shall be consistent with the purpose for which the Society is constituted, including the representation of Affiliated Societies.

## **REPORT of SOCIETY ACTIVITIES** 

## **Ordinary meetings:** 

The Society held ordinary meetings throughout the year. These were both live and virtual (Zoom) meetings. Subjects / lectures included the following: 

“Wild Orchids of the British Isles”, a Zoom presentation by Mrs. Celia Wright. 

“Orchids of the Cayman Islands”, a talk by Mr. Nick Johnson. 

“Exploring the Forests of Malaysia”, a talk by Mr. Francis Quesada-Pallares. 

“The Cultural Requirements of Orchids”, a talk by Mrs. Zsuzsanna Serer from Spicesotic Orchids. 

“Tropical Orchids Without the Heat”, a talk by Mr. Andrew Bannister from Orchid Alchemy. 

“Terrariums – An Ideal Environment to Extend your Orchid Collection”, a Zoom presentation by Mrs. Diana Petrokaite and Mr. Alex Koper. 

“A Guided Tour Around The Mather’s Foundation”, a Zoom presentation by Mr. David Mathers. 

“The OSGB Visit to The Eric Young Foundation”, a talk by Mr. Michael Radley. 

An Auction of orchids, where many plants are sold and purchased by members 

An orchid-themed Photographic and Art Competition 

At physical meetings members display their orchids, which are assessed and judged, and their history and cultivation requirements are discussed. Members have also sent photographs of their orchids in flower to the Chair of Judging and these have been judged by the O.S.G.B. judges, with the results being published on the O.S.G.B. website for all members to see.

## **Shows:** 

Two Open Shows were held in 2023: 

“The Spring Open Show” at Cole Court, Twickenham in April; and 

“The Autumn Open Show” at Wraysbury Village Hall in November 

At these Shows, members compete in 40 classes for cups and rosettes. 

## **Displays:** 

The Society built and manned five judged displays during the year at the following events: 

“The RHS Spring Show” at RHS Garden Wisley in March, when a Silver medal was awarded. 

“The RHS Chelsea Flower Show” in May, when a Gold medal was awarded. 

“The International Orchid Show” at the Royal Three Counties Show, Malvern in June, when a Gold medal was awarded. 

“The RHS Hampton Court Palace Garden Festival” in July, when a Gold medal was awarded for a Display of Anguloas. This display was also awarded the Holford Medal from the RHS for the Best Amateur Exhibit at an RHS Show in 2023. 

“The RHS Hampton Court Palace Garden Festival” in July, when a Silver-Gilt medal was awarded for a naturalistic display of orchids. 

## **Library:** 

The Society’s Library continued to acquire books and periodicals on orchids and orchid cultivation and to be widely used as a reference and lending library by the members of the Society.

The Journal (and other publications):
Four issues of The Orchid Society of Great Britain Journal were published during the
year. In all, this publication ran to 336 'all-colour' pages. and included articles on orchid
cultivation. orchids seen in their nativ¢ Su￿OUnd1ng$, members. plants, botany and
orchid pests. together with many photographs of orchids. Also included was news from
orchid societies both in the UK and abroad. orchid book reviews, announcements and
orchid nursery advertisements.
The O.S.G.B. Journal is received by all members of the Orchid Society of Great Britain,
with new members receiving back issues where appropriate. An Annual Supplement is
published annually in May containing the Society's rules and activittes. this is also
received by all members. In 2013 an Anli-Fraud Policy was issued by ihe O.S.G.B. and
in 2019 a Data Protection Policy was I￿u¢d. Both of these policies are published in the
Annual Supplement.
Sponsorship:
The Sir Jeremiah Colman Gift Trust generously donated £l.000 to the Society.
A £2,500 donation was received towards the cost of the display for the RHS Chelsea
Flower Show.

## **GOVERNING DOCUMENT and PURPOSE of the TRUST** 

The original Governing Document of the Trust is a “Declaration of Trust”, dated 26th June 1986, made by the founding Trustees, Alexander Cedric Robert Bristow, Leslie Ernest Bowen, Timothy John Lewis, Phillip James Cribb, Peter Maudesley and John Raymond Oddy. 

This “Declaration of Trust” was updated on 4[th] September 2021 under Section 275, part 3.4, of the Charities Act 2011 to bring its purpose into line with current views on orchid conservation. The update was carried out by the Trustees at the time; Simon Edward Alves Pugh-Jones, Amy Charlotte Malin, Sally May Mill, Pearl Jenny Thomson, Susan Johnson, Galina Boyse, Lara Jewett and David McLaughlin. The updated “Declaration of Trust” was submitted to, and accepted by, the Charity Commission and became effective in July 2022. 

The purpose of the Trust is to hold on trust all subscriptions and donations made and given for the furtherance of the charitable object hereinafter contained for the purpose (if and in so far as the same shall be charitable) of conservation of all orchids by encouraging orchid growing; providing education in any form regarding orchid growing including shows, publications and supporting research; by placing endangered orchids and specialist collections of orchids with suitable collectors / collections; by supporting ex-situ conservation of orchids by seed raising and ex-situ propagation both for in-situ reintroduction and introduction into cultivation in the United Kingdom.

## **LIST of TRUSTEES** 

In accordance with the “Declaration of Trust”, there are eight Trustees of the Trust. Six of these shall be the Trustees of The Orchid Society of Great Britain. The other two Trustees shall be the Curator of Orchids at The Royal Botanical Gardens, Kew and the Senior Supervisor of Orchids at the Royal Horticultural Society Garden, Wisley. The power of appointing new Trustees is vested in the surviving or continuing Trustees. The Trustees are all honorary and are as follows:

The Trustees have continued to invest the assets of the Trust to maximise income
without inCu￿1ng risk. to further the aim of setting up national collections to conserve
orchids. and to promote education and conservation.
During 2023, the Trustees confim]ed thal they would continue iheir award scheme to
make grants available to orchid growers holding National Plant Collections of Orchids.
public orchid collections in Botanical Gardens and specialist private collections o
orchids; and to schemes which aid conservation of orchids. These grants can be given
for small capital projects, such as the purchase of planls, equipment or materials for the
furtherance of a collection, especially for educational projects or for scientific work.
The grants are awarded twice yearly. (or more frequently by a￿angement of ihe
Trustees), the total amouni given being up to the amount of interest accrued during the
year {and carried over from previous years). Details ol. the scheme are publicised in the
Journal of The Orchid Socieiy of (Treat Britain and in The Orchid Revtew and wiif also
be circulated io the British Orchid Council and its member socielies.
In 2023, three awards were applied for, and granted..
An award ol £1,525 was made lo ihe Mathers Foundation to assist in the moving of a
collection of Bulbuphyllum orchids to their premises for conservation.
An award 01 £2.642 was made to Mr. Edward Charlton for a laminar flow cabinet to
cnable orchid propagation.
An award of £1.522 was made to Dr. Siuart Meeson for transport to the World Orchid
Congress, Taiwan to present a scienlific poster on the beauty and forni of flowering
orchids to educate and encourage mor¢ people to grow these unusual plants.

## _**Incoming resources**_ 

- All income other than interest received is accounted for on a cash received basis

Expenses are charged to the receipts and payments account on an accruals basis. The costs so charged include VAT where applicable.

Tangible fixed assets are capitalized at cost and are depreciated to write off the 

cost over three or five years depending on the life expectancy of the equipment.
