## **ANNUAL REPORT BY THE SOCIETY’S COUNCIL** 

The Isle of Wight Natural History and Archaeological Society, Unit 7c, Prospect Business Centre, Prospect Road, Cowes, Isle of Wight, PO31 7AD is registered with the Charity Commissioners and governed by a set of rules lodged with the Charity Commission. 

The Charity is administered by a Council, comprising: 

President: Dr Vivian Roberts Secretary: Dr Colin Pope Treasurer: Mr Nigel Locke 

**Other members:** Mr Paul Bingham, Mr Al Blenkinsop, Mr David Bone, Mrs Selena Bone, Mr Matthew Chatfield, Mrs Toni Goodley, Miss Lily Gray, Miss Jacqueline Hart, Dr Roger Herbert, Mrs Hazel Makepeace, Mrs Anne Marston, Mrs Margaret Nelmes, Mr Trevor Price, Dr Anthony Roberts, Mr Richard Smout, and Mr Dave Trevan. 

New council members are elected at the Annual General Meeting. 

The objects of the Charity are to promote, for the benefit of the public, the study of natural history, geology and archaeology especially in relation to the Isle of Wight and to promote the preservation of all objects of special archaeological and geological interest. 

We provide a programme of meetings throughout the year for our various sections of natural history, geology and archaeology. A recorders conference was held in November which was open to anyone who has an interest in recording the Island's flora and fauna. The iWatch project holds events during the year to encourage young people and their families to observe wildlife on the Isle of Wight. 

A visual records section has been setup so that digital photographs of natural history, archaeology and geology of the Isle of Wight may be recorded with the provenance and stored for future reference.

## **INDEPENDENT EXAMINER’S REPORT TO THE COUNCIL** 

I report to the Council on my examination of the accounts of the Isle of Wight Natural History and Archaeological Society (the Society) for the year ended 31st December 2025. 

RESPONSIBILITIES AND BASIS OF REPORT 

As the Council members of the Society, you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 ('the Act'). 

I report in respect on my examination of the Society's accounts carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act and in carrying out my examination I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act 

INDEPENDENT EXAMINER'S STATEMENT 

I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe that in any material respect: 

1. accounting records were not kept in respect of the Society as required by section 130 of the Act; or 

2. the accounts do not accord with those records;

## **NOTES TO THE ACCOUNTS** 

## 1 **Accounting policies** 

The  2025  accounts  are  prepared  using  the  Receipts  and  Payments  basis  as  laid  down  by  the  Charity Commissioners and meet the requirements for a charity of our size. 

2 **Council members expenses** No Council members have received reimbursement for expenses in their role as Council, but they may have a second role as section or group leader in the Society, and they may have received reimbursement of expenses as group leaders for activities as such. 

- 3 **Designated funds** 

   - It is the Society's policy to allocate receipts of an _ad hoc_ nature, such as legacies or one-off specific grants, to Designated Funds. 

   - The capital will be kept intact until such time as Council identify any suitable application of the funds. Such applications may be of an income or capital nature. 

   - The income from the capital will be added to unrestricted funds and used for the benefit of the Society as a whole. 

4 **Donations and legacy** 

The Society received a legacy of £90,000 from the estate of Jean Dorothy McCormac in 2024.
