Secretary’s Report for the Year Ending 31st December 2024

After a busy and successful year in 2023, the following year 2024 was a quieter year preparing for the improvements to the Lodge building next to the A6 entrance to Whitworth Hospital.

The project entailed maintenance works due to dampness and the complete restructure of the interior. On the upper floor, the kitchen and interior wall and doors have been removed and new ceilings and flooring fitted. The toilet area has been retained and refreshment facilities provided in the new enlarged meeting room.

The downstairs area has also been upgraded providing two possible consultation or meeting rooms, both with en-suite.

Work has continued throughout the winter and we hope to open the reconditioned Lodge building at the end of June 2025.

The Community Diagnostic Centre has added clinics and continues to grow and provide well needed and used services. Ultrasound and X- Ray departments are now open at weekends.

The Urgent Treatment Centre continues to provide excellent service with additional staff, and numbers using the service continue to grow. It uses a ‘triage’ system to cope with the extra number of patients and is a very busy department. Eileen Tutssel has now knitted over 700 teddy bears for children using the UTC but it is hard to provide enough to keep up with demand. A few very welcome knitters have begun to support the scheme.

The League has provided new seating for the waiting area in Reception and provided money for Christmas activities including presents for patients and Christmas food gifts for staff. Podiatry also received a portable Doppler Scanner.

The Whitworth Hospital continues to grow and provide more services and clinics which are valued by the local community and which help to reduce the number of visits to Chesterfield Royal Hospital. I can vouch

for the excellent service in Oker Ward having experienced 5 weeks of their expertise, kindness and encouragement. They taught me to walk again and yes I did receive a Christmas present from the League.

I should like to thank the Committee and Chairman for all their help and support and continuing with my work whilst I was in hospital and subsequently house-bound.

I am particularly grateful to Richard for taking notes, writing Minutes and compiling them for approval by myself and the Chairman. Our Chairman Pete, Treasurer Brian and Tom our Vice-Chairman and Community Representative deserve medals for coping with my lack of hearing in a difficult year, not least due to my accident late in 2023 and rehabilitation throughout 2024.

We would also like to thank our Presidents for their wonderful continuing support of the League and for giving their time to our activities and events.
