## **SECRETARY’S REPORT FOR THE YEAR ENDING 31[ST] DECEMBER 2021**

It is a pleasure to read my report and to meet Friends face to face after two years of Postal AGM’s.

Like the previous year, 2021 was affected by Covid-19 and the changing patterns of restrictions. The League started the year continuing help to all staff working at Whitworth Hospital with deliveries each week of alternating savouries, confectionery and fruit from Chatsworth farm Shop, who gave us a generous discount.

We also supplied lip salves, face creams and boiled sweets to combat the dryness

of continually wearing face masks. A new member of the committee, David Brunt, a retired Pharmacist took over the purchasing and delivery of some of these items.

The Minor Injury Unit was upgraded to an Urgent Treatment Centre, known as a “UTC”, and all treatment rooms required hand washing facilities which the League

agreed to provide. The UTC also took over the Children’s Room needed as an extra treatment room. The children were not able to use the communal toys so a system suggested by Susan White, head of the MIU at the time, was started to provide each child with a toy to play with whilst at hospital and then take home. This form of infection control has proved so successful that the committee has

decided to continue it in the future.

The Matlock Branch of The Nottingham Building Society contacted the League to become their nominated charity for a year. They had a raffle, a static cycle ride and book sale before Christmas and have further plans. They have already given the League £641 towards the cost of the children’s toys. The toys have lately included about 100 cuddly washable wool teddy bears made by member, Mrs Eileen Tutsell and they are loved by everyone

The League supplied monies for Christmas presents for in-patients and new lights

for the Christmas tree on the front lawn. Three outside patient benches

made

from recycled plastic, which look like wood and requires no maintenance, were also provided. It was further agreed to plant a cherry tree on the lawn to celebrate the Queen’s Jubilee in 2022.

The League welcomed the reopening of Orchard Cottage albeit on a limited infection controlled scale and provided Christmas presents for all the clients – and some teddy bears.

The League built and equipped the X-Ray department about 40 years ago and had agreed to replace the machinery with modern equipment providing better and

more reliable imaging. The League also decided to provide a long requested Ultrasound Suite and funds were available for both. The project was replaced when Chesterfield Royal Hospital, who operate these clinics at The Whitworth, had a successful bid for new diagnostic equipment using Government money.

The League was able however to supply ‘Keeler’ eye equipment for the Eye Clinic.

The League will continue to support both Whitworth Hospital and Orchard Cottage in every way. Both have an excellent reputation and are valued by local people.

The League is grateful for the continued support of its members and the good will of the local community.

I should like to thank the committee for its help and support, particularly our Treasurer, Brian Wood, IT Officer Richard Hollingworth, and Tom Pilkington our Community Representative and Vice-Chair. Steven Walker has led the League through 3 difficult years and has sadly come to the end of his Chairmanship. We hope that Pete Vincent will take over next week.
