TRUSTEE REPORT FOR THE YEAR ENDING DECEMBER 2023
OBJECTIVES
The primary aims of the Trust are to fulfil the role of a Christian Church in the Biockley Area
and to provide help to otheTS in PTonioting th¢ Christian faith in as displayed in the principles
of the Baptist Union throughout Brockiey. Lewisham Borough and far afield where permitted.
THE CHLlllCH: ITS AIMS AND OBJECTIVES
The Church is not a building, but a gathering of ordinary peoplc of diff¢r¢nt agcs and
backgrounds, whos£ Iivcs have been changed by Jesus Christ. the Son of God. The New
Testamcnt reveals the Church ￿ a community of pcople. properly taught and cared for, whoin
by loving and serving Jesus Christ, were also cotninittcd to love and carc foT each other and
to bring a blessing to the area in which we reside.
Brockley Baplisi Church, its trustees, elders and memkrs are cornmitted to the restoration and
promotion of the Christian faith. It is not alone in this, it is one of many Churches in the
Brockley are4 country and over the world that is re-discovering the ¢xcilement uf knowing
Jcsus Chri.8t. Th¢ vision is to see the peoplc of Brocklcy come to know the Lord ￿ thcir
Saviour and friend.
Brockley Baptist Church is a mejnber ofthe Baptist Union and a long-standing relationship
with the Union,. a ChristiaT) organisation that pursues similar objectives in the UK and
overseas. The church works with Union in ￿51St1ng other churches and Teceives voluntary help
itself where needed. Financially supporting the Baptist Missionary Society, Baptist Home
Mission and Operational Agri together with other missionary organisations as i5 appropriate.
We are a small church with a meTnber5hip consisting of a range of age groups. IrL common
with other Baptist Churches. we hold worship every Sunday with CoTntnunion every first
Sunday. While the pandemic made us (along with other Churches} an 'online Church, since
then we have continued with the weekly Bible Studics and Praycr Meetings both 'in p¢rson'
and 'online'.
THE YF.AR.. ITS OBJECTIVES AND ACHIEVEMENTS
During the year ending December 2023. we have continued learning and growing spiritually
under the minisiry of our part-time Tninister, Reverend Michael M¢nsah. Not only do we have
the Sunday School but h(Ive also cornrnenced the Young Peoples Bible Study on Sundays, and
in conjunction with Young Life, have a Youth Club on a Wednesday evening. Although we
are still continuing to r¢cover from the effects of pandeinic, attendanc¢ figure% remain down
on pre-pandemic levels. Use of the Halls within the Building has significantly increased
within the local ¢ommunity, and with il the income obtailled from that usc, undcr the guidance
and direction of Marcia Walker-smith and her team, and the Trustees are grateful to her and
them for this.
Pagc 2

Our key aims and a¢hiev¢menls 8re'.
Fulfilling the objects in teaching, preaching and showing prnctical care in the
community. This was both in the nomial teaching in the cliurch on Sundays, which
arc open to all, and midweek mceting for Church mcmbers.
• Supporting churches through the Baptist Union wc>rking elsewh¢r¢ both in ihe
United Kingdom and overse￿,
We have three special additional services each year. They are. Good Friday (a joint service of
the Brockley Community of Churches), Christmas Day and New Year's Eve (Watch Night).
Other particular services such as Remembrance Sunday, Sunday School & Young People
Pri7£giving are held within our nornial Sunday Morning Services.
The Trustees have complied with the duty under the Charitie5 Acts in thcir plaTrning and
monitoring to ensur¢ due regard to th¢ public bcncfit guidance published by the Charity
Comrnis5ion.
PLANS FOR THE FUTURE
Looking forward the key issues remain to build the Church attendance and membership by
attracting new p¢opl¢ to follow Jesus Cliri5t. to be of practical service to the local and wider
community and to ensure the church building is fully fil for purpose.
To thes¢ cnds the Church continues to engage in inteTnal Iraining coupled with extemal
outreach in partnership with otheT organisations such & Young Life atid The TLming.
With regard to the building th¢ Trustccs are activ¢ly working with an architect 10 both
prioritlse and cost that which is required to ensure the building is fit for the activities that
the Church wishe5 lo take placc within it and so fulfil the tirst tivo objectives set our in the
firsl paragraph of this section. At the dat¢ of tlLTS R¢port th¢ first of these, a redesign of
these 'stage' area is currently underway. but as the design has not yet been finalised. so it
has not yet been costed. The next. and longer-term projcct is the refurbishrnent of the Lower
Hall, such that it Inay i￿ more fully be ￿ed by the local ¢otnmunity, as well as increase the
income available to the Church from that Use.
FINANCJAI. RP.VIF.W AND RESF.RVES
The finan¢ial Tes¢rves of the Church h&ve been strengthened during the year as members have
continued to give plus ihe money coming in from the Tcntal of the Manse du¢ to the Minister
not living at the Manse. Outgoings have remained steady with no grcat demand on the Church
purse.
Pag¢ 3

Whilst there had historica]ly been no sel levels of reserves. the'frustees continue to seek to
keep one yearfs expenditure in reserve for ￿ and when needed. Within thaL expenditure is
tnade as and when. This has kept under rcvi¢w, having regard for the maintenance and
repaits that may be needed to the main Church Building. In October 2023 the Trustees
detcrmined to keep £60.000 as a separate reserve to be held in an account with the London
Baptist Property Board and that account was opened. but has not yet been utilised. Insiead
the Trustees have recently opened a separate savings account (Brockley Baptist Church
Social Funds Account) with their 13ankers (Nat West) for the lodging of receipts fTom the
various hires of the halls within the Building.
