THI CHURCH: ITS AIMS AND OBJECTIVES
The Church is not a building, but a gathering ot ordinaiy people of different ag￿ and
backgrounds, whosc livcs have bc¢n changed by Je.%us Christ, the Son of God. The New
Testament reveals the Church as a community of people, propcrly taught and carcd for,

Wc have four special additional s¢rvices eaLh year. Thcy are Maundy Thursday, Good

The Trustees havc complied with the duty under th¢ Charities Acts in their planning 2nd
monitoring to cnsure duc regard to the public b£ncfit guidancc published by the Charity
Commi&siJn.
PLANS FOR THF, FUTURE
Looking forward ihc key issues are to build the Church attcndance and membership by
attracting new people to follow Jesus Christ, to be of practical strvice to the local and widcr
cornn]unity and to ensure thc church building is fully fit for Pu￿OSe.
To these eiids the ChurLh is first engaging in intcrnal training coupled with cxternal outreach
in partnership with othcr organisations such as Young Life and The Turning.
With tegard to the building, storm damage has been i'epaired by our insurers but their
surveyor has also identified additional maintenance issucs that aPPEar not to be covered by
thELt insurance. Consequently in October 2023 initial indications were obtained on these
matt¢rs, being in the region of between £20,000 and £50,000 plus VAT. Jn addition to that,
Ihe'frustees are ¢ULTently in the process of engaging a suitable arohitect or othei. similar
pi'ofessional with a view to carrying out a quinquennial review of the existing structur¢
together with considering the I'efuTbi8hment of thc building so that it is b¢tter able to a5SlSt
th¢ Church in ￿lfIllIng the first two objective5 5cI out in the first pai?gi'aph of this sectLOn.
FINANCL4L REVIEW AND RESEI RVTr".S
The financi81 reseives of the Church hav¢ been strengthened during the year as members
havc continued lo give plus the money Coming in from the rental of the Manse due to tli¢
Interim Minister not living as at the Manse as he had his own aicommodation. Outgo￿1]gS
havc I'emaincd steady with no great demand on the Church pursc. The Trustces had
previously agreed to look at splitting the Mansc into two fIats with a nttw minister and family
occupying the larger flat and the othcr flat being rcnted out to secure a steady income for the
church.
During 2019 difficultieq arosc wÉth the mandate for bank payments with the conscquence that
for a pei'iod, which continued in 2020 and to a very small extent in 2021, the church was not
able to accomplish payinents for expenditure. As a result, payiiients were madc by the then
Minister on bchalf of the church. These amounts werc still owed to the then Minister as at 31
DLcember 2022 and as a consequence have not been inclLided in the 'Receipts and paymcnts
account, Details of th¢ cxpenditure paid by the th¢n Ministei. on behalf of thc chui-ch are
detailcd in Note 4 to Ihc accounts and the total Linount owed to him is shown in the
'Statcment of asscts and liabilitifjs, in Note C. At his i'tqucst the amounts owed were double
checked by two Trustees (other tlian either Millister) acting independently of each other and
P898 3

against rcceipts of that expenditure, with that confirmation being provided to The
Independcnt Exainin¢i'. These amounts wcrc then repaid in full in March 2023.
Whi15t there had histoi'ically been no set levels of reserves, the Trustees sought to keep one
year's expenditure in reservc when necded. Within that, expcnditure is made as and when.
This has kept undcr review, having regard foi. the maintenancc and repairs that may be
needed to the main Church Building. In October 2023 the Trustces determined to kc¢p
£60,000 as a separatc rcserve to be held in an account with the London Baptist propcrty
Board.
As explained abov¢, there was repayment of the minister of the amounts owed to him of
£21,906 as detailed in Note 4 to the kLccounts. Excluding this indebtedness ind othei. noiinal
opei'ating cxpenses of around £4,000, the icsei'ves hcld at the cnd of 2022 amounted to
appi'oximatcly £75,000 which is in line with the reserv¢s policy.
GRANT POLICY
Gifts to external organisations arc considered by the TrLLStees on the basi5 of need such as the
Flood Appcal for Jamaica through the Baptist lJnion. Amounts are discussed among the
Trust¢e how much to give with appropriate I'c¢ommerEdations givcn to thc Church
Membership in Church Mc¢ting.
RISK INL4NAGEMENT
All major insurable risks are subjcct to normal policies building pi'emises. Contractual risks
are rcviewed on a one to one basis bcfore being entered into. Annu21 revicw ofareas of risk
is undertaken by the Trustccs in conjunction with what is taken place, activities, and external
Iripf taking the Sunday school out in thc Minibus.
