Objècts ofthe Soclety
Thè Society exists to promote the Studyof agricultural history and thÈ history of rural gconomy
and society. It does this through th8 publication of its biannualjournal The Agricultural History
Review. and its newsletter. Rural HistoryToday. and by holding at least conferences 8aeh
year. These activities are contained in the Society's constitution adopted at its foundation in
1953, and subsequently modified at the Society'sAnnu8LGeneral Meetings in 2000 and 2016
Publishing
This Continues to be the principal me8n$ by which the SocietyfulfiL8 its objectives.
The Society published tr40 issues ofThe AgTicultural History Review. Volume 71
120231 in June and january. Back numbers of the Review are freely available to ailvia
thg website. three ye8rs in arrears. The Society also pubtished issues of the
newsletter Rur81 HistoryToday, which is widely distributed beyond the membe¥ship
of the Society and is freely available to all on the BAHS website. The website 8iso.
amongst other things. hosts LIBRAL (Library of Irish and British Rur8l8nd Agricultural
Literaturel, whi¢h provides directfree access to digitized Itterature on the Slsbject.
Duringthe year £1.631 w8$ spent on UBRALdevelopment. scanning a wid$ range of
works.
Grants
The &)¢iety offers grants to individuals. societies, and institutions in the furtherance of
its object8. Duringthe year, 8n award 01 £500 was taken up. Joan Thirsk Memorial
prlze awards tot81in8 É1.000 were rFi8de duiingthe year as part ofthe nomialoperation8
ofthe Society.

The number of individual m&mbers fell slightly. Hoydever. the number of institutional memb8r8
has Temained stable. Most new members continue tojoin through the website. paying by
P8yP81. ElectTollic 8ccess to the Rwewvia Ingenta is provided freé lor individual rnembers and
institutional subscrib8is (Ingenta's costs are treated as partofthe Production and Despatch of
the R9viewl.

The Society made a surplus of £17.726 in the year compared Vdith a small loss of
£810 in 2022-23. Compared with the previous ytsar. 8ubscriptions were up by £1,332
and journal sales by £8,096. The loss on the Spring Conterence was lowerthan in the
previous y98r, £1.266 comp8r6d wtth £2,842 in 2022-23.
Total expendtture forthe year1£33.2271 vms broadlycomparable with th& previous
year1£34,3081.
Unrealized movements in investments Showed a surplus on th8 previousyear, £2.482
compar8d with a ios8 of £4,853 in 2022-23. lknfall. the Society is in a healthy
position. with sorne £147.418 of cash and investmenis 8t currenivalues1£127.210 in
2022-2231.
Reserves Polley
The Society's policy is. taking one yearwith the next, to spend the income it receives in pursuit
of its objective$. while setting 8$ide any $urplu3es to cover future projects. and to generate
fvturg income to support thg society's grants and awards. The Society has no Restricted Fund8.
Its Unrestricted Funds currentlystand at £147.418 out of which two Designated Funds have
bèen set aside by theTrustees. as follows:

Currently standing at £28.￿9 this is set 8side to Payfor new and continuing activities which
Cannot readily be funded from in-yoar revenue. Expenditure from this fijnd is at the discretion of
the Tru8tees.
Rèsèareh and Grants Fund
Currently standing at £43.501. this is iniended to be an investmentfund, the income from whlch
will be used for the provision of grdnts donations to support new research, and events such
88 conferences. awards. and publications in the Society's area of agricultural and rural history.
Unrobtricted, Undesignat
The balance of our reserves stand8 at E75.008. equivalentto signiticantly moreth8n on&year's
current expenditure. It IS the intention of the Trustees to aim to m8int8in this fvnd at 8 level
8ulficient to cover seasonal and unexpected ftuctuation$ between income and expenditure.

I report to the charity trustees on my examination of the accounts of the charity for the year ended 31
January 2024.

As the charitws trustees you are responsible forthe preparation of the accounts in accordance with the
requirements of the Charities Att 20111.the ACVI.
I report in respert of my examination of the chariws accounts carried out under sertion 145 of the Act
