beyond the membership ofthe Society and is freely available to Bll onthe BAHS
w¢b$it8. The websits 8Lso. amongst othèrthings. hosts LIBRAL ILibr8ry of Irish and
British Rural and Agricultural Literature), which provides direetfvee accessto
digitized literature on the subject. Duringtheyear £4,162 was spent on UBRAL

The Society offers grantsto individuals. societies, and institutions in the furtheranctr ol
its objects. During the year, an award of £500 wastaken up. Ajoan Thirsk Memorial
prlzè award of £500w8s madè duringth• ￿8T as p8rtoYth8 no￿n#10￿18tions ofthe
Society.

Thg number of indrvidual membors fell $lTghtly. However. the numberof institutional members
has remained stable. Most new members continuetojoin through the website. paying by
PayP8I. Electronic access to the Review￿5 Ing8nta is provid8d free for indwidual members and

the Review).

The Society made 8 small loss of£810 in the year compared wrth a smallsurplus of
£1,867 in 2021-22. Subscriptions were down by £1.809 and journal sales were broadly
level compared with the prèvious y&8r. Thè1099 on the Spring Conterence wa8 higher
than in the previous year, £2,842 compared Trmth £918 in 2021-22.
On th8 exponditure side. the costs of producing8nd disp8tchingth8 Review. thè
maintenance ol the webstte and the development of UBRALwere all Lowerthan in
2021-22. Total expenditure forthe yearwas £34,308 compared wf(h £36,636 in 2021-
22.
Unrealized movemenis in investments showed 8 signthcant loss on the pwous year.
£4,853 compared with 8 gain of E9.096 in 2021-22. (knraLi, the &Trciety is in a hgalthy
position, with Some £127.210 of cash and investments atcurrentvalues1£132,873 in
2021-221.
Reserves Poucy
The Society's pobcy 18. t8king oneyg8rwtth the next. to spendthe income it receTves in pursuit
of its objectives, while setting aside any surpluses to cover future projects. and to generate
future incorne to support the society's grants and awards. The Society has no Restricted Funds.
Its Unrestricted Funds Currently st8nd at £127,210 out ofwhich Designated Funds have
b8èn sat aside bythe Truste84 as follu4VS'.
Dg8ignat8d Projects and Initisti￿s Fund
Currently stsnding8t £27.234. this is seta$ide to pay for new and continuing activities which
cannot readily be lunded from in-year revenue. Expenditure from this fund is 8t the discretion of
the Trustees.
Research and Grants Fund
Currently standing at £44,199, this is intended to be an investmentlund. the Income from which
WI￿ be used for the provision of grants and donations to support new r8s&8rch. and events such
as conf8renc88. W8rds. 8nd publications in the Socievs area of agriculturaland rur81 history.
Unrestrlcted. Undeslgnated
Th8 balance of our re5eTves stands at £55.777. equivalent to more than one y88r's current
expenditure. It is the intention of the Trustees to aim to maintain this fund at a level sufficientto
coversessonal and unexpected fluctuations bfften income and expenditure. wtthout h8ving
to sell arw ofour investments. which might incur significant Losse$.
