## **REPORT TO THE CHARITY COMMISSIONERS**

## **ANNUAL REVIEW AND ACCOUNTS 2022**

## **INTRODUCTION**

Ely Diocesan Mothers’ Union is a registered charity (Charity Registration No. 251394) and is an affiliated diocesan organisation of The Mothers’ Union (Charity Registration No. 240531). The constitution of Ely Diocesan Mothers’ Union is in accordance with the Constitution of The Mothers’ Union dated 2018.

## **PURPOSE, AIM AND OBJECTIVES**

The Purpose and Aim of the Ely Diocesan Mothers’ Union is that of the Mothers’ Union:

The Purpose of the Mothers’ Union is to be especially concerned with all that strengthens and preserves marriage and Christian family life.

The Aim of the charity is the advancement of the Christian religion in the sphere of marriage and family life. In order to carry out this Aim, its Objectives are:-

- to uphold Christ’s teaching on the nature of marriage and to promote its wider understanding

- to encourage parents to bring up their children in the faith and life of the Church

- to maintain a worldwide fellowship of Christians united in prayer, worship and service

- to promote conditions in society favourable to stable family life and the protection of children

- to help those whose family life has met with adversity.

## **ORGANISATION**

Ely Diocesan Mothers’ Union is managed by the Board of Trustees headed by the Diocesan President and Diocesan Vice-Presidents. The Board of Trustees is serviced by a voluntary non-voting Minutes Secretary. There is a maximum of 17 voting Trustees, 11 of whom are elected by the Council of the Society; one (the Treasurer) is nominated by the Board of Trustees and the Life Vice-President can be nominated and appointed by the trustees and ratified by Council. There are up to 3 co-opted trustees. Nominations for Diocesan President by the trustees must be approved by the Bishop of Ely before election by all members. Elections are held every 3 years.

The work of the Charity is organised in Task Groups each headed by a Leader who is a Trustee. The task groups are Praying our Faith, Faith in Action, Finance & Administration and Fundraising & Communication.

As an affiliated diocesan organisation of The Mothers’ Union, the work of the Charity follows the policies of the central organisation. There is close liaison between the central and diocesan units. The Central Mothers’ Union organises a training day for trustees at the start of each triennial and the diocese provides new trustees with a welcome pack detailing their responsibilities. In the diocese the work of the Charity is carried out by volunteers in parish and deanery based branches and by diocesan members.

The Charity no longer has the use of a central office and since the beginning of the Covid Pandemic in March 2020 all officers have been working from home. There is a voluntary Diocesan Secretary. Branches work closely with the local parish or deanery of the Church of England.

## **ANNUAL REVIEW 2022**

During the year the Diocesan Trustees met on four occasions to plan for and review the work of the Mothers’ Union in the Diocese of Ely in meeting our stated objectives.

The Annual General Meeting was held at St Peter’s Church, March in April and the Annual Report and accounts were circulated to members and accepted. The Autumn Diocesan Day was held at All Saints Church, Milton in October.

The General Meeting (Annual Gathering) of the Worldwide Mothers Union was held in Belfast in September.

The on-going support of our bishops, the Chapter of Ely Cathedral and other senior clergy has enabled us to maintain a high profile for the Mothers’ Union in the Diocese and our President is an ex officio member of the Diocesan Synod. We continue to enjoy good working relationships with Diocesan staff. However, the Diocesan Office closed due to the pandemic in March 2020 and everyone is working from home. The office is due to be relocated in Ely, where there will be a space for the MU Office.

Members have continued to support Mothers’ Union initiatives in the diocese and worldwide.

**B1**

**T** he work of our society is detailed in the four Task Groups:

## **PRAYING OUR FAITH**

This past year has seen an ever increasing opening up of society since the pandemic of COVID-19. Being together has become 'normal' again and our two Quiet Days, held on 10th March and 29th September were well supported, with members being given the opportunity of a refreshing and uplifting experience.

Our vigil for the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and abuse against women and girls was well attended with 21 members joining in the 3-minute silence outside the Cathedral after taking part in a prayer vigil inside for 30 minutes. This annual international campaign starts on 25th November (International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women) and runs until Saturday 10th December (International Day of Human Rights).

Thursday Prayer has continued in Ely Cathedral Presbytery and also on Zoom for those who prefer this. The dual presentation works well and those who attend are able to enjoy fellowship in the Almonry afterwards.

## Clergy Liaison

Della Fetcher has continued to inform and update the Ely Diocese Clergy of Mothers' Union activities throughout the year. She has sent MU ordination cards to all the newly Ordained and welcomed all newly appointed Parish Clergy. She sent out Mothering Sunday resources for use by Clergy, and a letter and poster advertising the MU 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence were sent out to all parish Clergy, Archdeacons, Bishops and Ely Cathedral Clergy. Della is constantly looking for new ways to communicate the work of Mothers'

Union to Clergy for use in parishes and is keen to promote Mothers' Union to those newly ordained as well as clergy new to the diocese. Worldwide Links

Irene Porter, new in this role, emailed New Year greetings to our link Dioceses in Zambia, Rwanda, Nigeria and India. She received a reply from Claudine (DP) in Shyogwe, Rwanda, who sent greetings to Ely with a message of hope for continued prayer and servitude through the difficult times with COVID-19. Irene has also been trying to establish a link with Mothers' Union in Kigali, Rwanda.

**B2**

At Easter, Irene sent greetings to all our worldwide links. Claudine from Shyogwe sent greetings back. After our AGM in April, Irene sent a photo of members in the church hall, again Claudine replied. The Rev. Priscilla Reuben who leads the Women’s Fellowship from Karimnagar, also replied saying that Mother’s Day was celebrated in almost all the main churches and that she hopes to send photos. They are also having gatherings and retreats almost every month, where nearly 300 women attend.

After our garden party in July Irene sent photos to all our links and received thank you emails from Mildred (DP) in Lusaka, Claudine in Shyogwe, Rev. Priscilla in Karimnagar, and Esther, (wife of the Bishop of Kigali). Esther has also sent photos of an MU conference and Rev. Priscilla attended the Lambeth conference.

Irene sent invites to our worldwide links to join our November Thursday Prayers online. Esther in Kigali was able to join, along with three others in the MU office. Irene emailed that evening to thank them for joining us. Esther sent photos of their "16 Day" event on December 3rd. Irene has sent Mothers' Union Christmas cards to all our links. Included in the cards are, very flat, wooden Angels, made by the husband of one of her MU Members; or a wooden round with "Peace" in glitter, made by a member of her church congregation. Irene also sent 4 to Esther so that she could give one to each of the ladies who joined us at the prayers.

## Indoor Members (IMPC)

Joanna Sanders has continued to maintain contact between the 19 (now reduced to 16) indoor members and Mothers' Union in the Ely Diocese, this year.

She has sent each member a Christmas card with a copy of a letter written to them by the Worldwide President. She has also sent them all an Easter card with a letter enclosed from Hazel Williams, our Diocesan President and in the summer she sent a letter from herself. Each member receives a birthday card from her with Joanna also informing Mary Sumner House of those members who are to reach their 90th birthday and beyond in order that MSH can send a card to these members. All cards sent are from those produced by the Mothers Union.

An A5 large-print prayer diary, entitled 'Thoughts and Prayers for Indoor Members', is also provided. This is based on the Thursday Prayer booklet. It includes the Indoor Members' Prayer, the Lord's Prayer and Mary Sumner’s Prayer.

## **FAITH IN ACTION**

2022 was a busy year for the Task Group. Sadly, our Prisons work was unable to restart as planned, as new security scanning was needed for the participating members; we hope clearance will be granted early in ’23.

All 3 Women’s Refuges in the Diocese of Ely, and 2 young people’s hostels, have been well provided with personal and domestic items throughout the year; and supermarket vouchers at Christmas time, that enable the recipients to choose something they particularly want. The following thank you came from one of the Refuges-

_“Thank you very much for these vouchers. They are brilliant for helping women to celebrate Christmas by choosing the food and gifts they would like, and they were very well received. Please do pass on our sincere thanks to all the members of the Mother’s Union who donated them”._

A Ukrainian extended family and the relatives they were staying with, (who did not qualify for government support) were helped with supermarket vouchers and items for the 2 homes they eventually moved into. .

We were able to send 17 families away for an AFIA

“Away From It All” holiday in a mobile home at Hunstanton, and had excellent feedbackcomments, photos and a “Fank You” [sic] drawing. This project is very popular with members, and most branches fund-raise for it. Several branches

took part in Christmas Tree Festivals in their parishes, and the AFIA scheme was highlighted on them.

We were fortunate in securing some funding, from a Diocesan Welfare Fund.

## One mother wrote -

_“The holiday gave us the opportunity to be a family without the day to day stresses of home-life._

_L. has only left the house on a few occasions over the last 3-4 years and so this was a massive achievement for him. It has made him realise he can go out and he has started to do small outings._

_L. enjoyed fish and chips from a fish and chip shop which he has never done before._

_The holiday itself was wonderful. Caravan was stunning and that in itself was amazing but then to receive 2 wallets, one for each of the boys and an envelope for myself with spending money made all the difference. Thank you so very much from all of us. Much appreciated._

_**B5**_

Last year we began supporting an evolving charity in parishes bordering Peterborough diocese. Throughout the year we provided Mary’s Child with food, toiletries and domestic goods. We have been working on a partnership arrangement to support a Families Support Worker in the 3 parishes, starting January ’23, and a place on the Local Management Board has been allocated for one of our diocesan trustees. This will enable us to have a clear idea of the work being done, and the difference made to children and families there.

We were very pleased to learn that the worker appointed was already a Mothers’ Union member, having been one for five years in her native Zimbabwe.

Our knitters have kept busy. 480 small garments have been sent via the task Group to Hinchingbrooke Hospital and Ely Baby Bank, and various items to the Fenland Family Bank. Lap blankets, Twiddle Muffs and Dementia Cannula sleeves gave been gratefully received by the Dementia Specialist Nurse at Hinchingbrooke Hospital. One school requested hats for the Nursery and Reception classes, and we were happy to respond. Some branches hand over directly to the Hospitals and Care Homes and where they know there is local need.

We have supported other charities whose aims are similar to ours – to “support family life” and “those living with adversity”. Collections of postcards have been sent to Mission Aviation Fellowship, and postage stamps to Leprosy Mission, Marie Curie Cancer Care, and St. Johns Hospice Moggerhanger (which caters for the South West of Ely Diocese). Once again, a car load of blankets and knitted jumpers and hats were delivered to Christian Hope International for distribution in needy areas around the world.

Members in Ely Diocese are putting their “Faith In Action” and will continue supporting others in 2023,

**B6**

## **FINANCE AND ADMINISTRATION**

This Group continues to ensure that the Charity complies with the requirements of the Charity Commission and associated legislation through providing administrative services and observing correct accounting procedures.

The Group prepared the Annual Review and Accounts. Derek Tye was appointed as treasurer in 2021 and has taken on the administrator’s role too.

A fund, named the “Susan Baker Family Fund” was set up in memory of our immediate past president, Susan Baker who died in 2020. It was agreed by trustees that this should support family work in the diocese.

Kristy Leach, Safeguarding Officer, has kept trustees informed of safeguarding issues and requirements. Some training has taken place and she has offered to visit branches to talk about Safeguarding and offer training. There is new training online on the Diocesan Website specifically in regard to Domestic Violence Awareness.

Notice was also taken and implemented of the Charity Commissioners’ Guidance for Charity Trustees to show public benefit in the advancement of the Society’s Charitable Purposes, namely: the advancement of religion, the prevention or relief of poverty, the relief of those in need by reason of financial hardship and the advancement of community development.

The task group continues to underpin the charitable purposes of the Society through offering guidance and support in finance, training and general administration to Trustees, Deanery and Branch officers.

**B7**

## **FUNDRAISING AND COMMUNICATION**

There are several ways in which our Group communicates, supports, and engages with members, as well as promotion and informing others on a local, national and worldwide level.

Our monthly Diocesan Newsletter is produced by Hazel Williams which contains lots of interesting news and articles about MU events and projects. The monthly Family:Faith:Fun Activity Sheets (produced by Ros Wright) have been a great resource for members, and available to be shared with families and parishes. Our MU page on the Ely Diocesan website is regularly updated with the Newsletters, Family:Faith:Fun Activity Sheets, Prayer Resources, and events. Relevant items are posted on the Facebook page which has attracted interest, both locally and nationally, and also overseas. https://www.facebook.com/MUElyDiocese/ The MU Noticeboard in the Cathedral is located in the southwest transept near St Catherine’s Chapel, with displays being looked after by Penny Hall and Mary Finney, covering various seasonal and thematic topics and MU events and information. A new feather flag was purchased for use at Baby Tents at Country Shows and other MU Events. For the 16 Days of Activism against gender-based violence, three new placards were bought for use at the Banner Witness outside Ely Cathedral in November. A photo and newspaper article appeared in the Ely Standard.

We are back to meeting in person for our services and events, but Monthly Thursday Prayer in Ely Cathedral continues to be streamed live via Zoom as well. Recordings are posted on our YouTube Channel, to enable those members who could not come along or join in at a set time to be able see the videos. We have been able to join in with the Live Mothers’ Union Midday Prayers held daily on Facebook, thoughtfully led by staff from Mary Sumner House, and other MU members from around the country and worldwide. Other Live Services have been shown via Facebook as well, and were made available on the MU YouTube Channel afterwards.

We held our Garden Party in the Bishop of Ely’s garden on 15[th] July which was very enjoyable, with Bishop Dagmar Winter speaking, and a surprise visit from Bishop Stephen. There was a card and gift stall, a Worldwide Links display, and a raffle was held. £265.65 was raised from the event, including the raffle proceeds of £194, which all went towards MU Projects.

**B8**

## **DIOCESAN MEMBERS**

Diocesan Members were written to or emailed each month with the Newsletter, Family:Faith:Fun Activity Sheets, Prayer Resources, and other relevant documents and leaflets, with membership totaling 70 at the end of the year.

The first Diocesan Members’ Lunch for a few years took place on 1[st] November at the Old Bishop’s Palace, King’s School Ely. Nearly 30 Members and Trustees enjoyed a lovely 2-course lunch of chicken and cheesecake. There was also a card stall run by Maureen Wright and a Faith in Action display from Maureen Haigh.

We were pleased to welcome Canon Jessica Martin from Ely Cathedral, who gave an interesting talk about All Soul’s Day. Hazel Williams gave us an update about latest MU News. The raffle raised £64 which went towards AFIA (Away From It All Holidays). The small profit of £27 from the Lunch also went to AFIA. It was great to be able to gather together again and enjoy good food and fellowship.
