The trustees present their report and financial statements for the year ended 30 June 2025.
## **Structure, Governance and Management**
The Churchill College Chapel Trust was established as the Churchill College Chapel Society Trust by the Churchill College Trustees on the 1st December 1966 by a resolution to execute a Trust Deed between the College Trustees at the time and Barclays Bank Ltd, as the custodian trustee. On 3rd January 2019 the Barclays Bank Trust Company Ltd, now called Zedra Trust Company (UK) Ltd was discharged from its role as Custodian Trustee of the charity by the Charity Commission under section 69 of the Charities Act 2011. On the same date the Charity Commission incorporated the trustees of the Churchill College Chapel Trust as a body corporate under the power given in section 251 of the Charities Act 2011.
Following the incorporation of the trustee body, the trustees reviewed and updated the governing documents of the charity to reflect gender neutrality and to ensure compliance with Charity Law and guidance issued by the Charity Commission. This included a review of the governance structures and policies of the charity.
There must be a minimum of 4 and a maximum of 8 ordinary trustees who must all be Fellows of Churchill College, Cambridge. There may be a maximum of 6 co-opted trustees. Ordinary members may hold office for as long as they remain Fellows of Churchill College. Co-opted trustees may hold office for so long as the ordinary trustees think fit. Any trustee may give notice to resign at any time.
The Officers of the Chapel Trustees shall consist of or include a Chair and Honorary Treasurer (who shall be trustees) and a Secretary who may be but need not be a trustee. All Officers shall be appointed by the Trustees.
The trustees set out the general policy of the Charity. The Charity’s property shall be administered by the Chapel Trustees with support from the staff of Churchill College.
New trustees are shown the work of the Chapel and the Trust by the Chairman and the Chaplain. They receive detailed reports of the activities of the Chapel and the Chaplain. The trustees generally meet 3 times per year.
The Trust received a donation which is to be spent at the Chaplain's discretion on work that would not traditionally have been carried out by the Trust. This income and related expenditure is shown as a restricted fund in the accounts.
In accordance with the Statement of Recommended Practice (Accounting and Reporting by Charities), the Trust is defined as being connected with Churchill College, whose principal address is Storey's Way, Cambridge, CB3 0DS.

## **Investment Powers**
The Chapel Trustees have the power to invest any money in such manner and in such part of the world as they may think fit always providing that the investment is regulated and complies with Charity Law as it may apply at the time.

## **Objectives and Activities for the Public Benefit**
The charity was formed to erect and maintain a chapel as a place for Christian worship for members of Churchill College and their families and friends. The Chapel at Churchill College is ecumenical and provides a locus for worship for all Christian people in the College community. Any Christian group may use the chapel for prayer, bible study or discussion, and can book through the chairman of the trustees. Services are held on Sundays during the University term. These services are open to the general public and are advertised on a notice board at the front of Churchill College. Members of the public may gain access to the chapel at other times by contacting the chairman of the trustees or the bursar. The chaplain is available to all students, fellows and staff of the college of any faith or none at any time and on any matter on which he may be able to help. He is in college at least one afternoon per week during term time.
## **Public Benefit Statement**
The trustees have considered the Charity Commission's guidance on public benefit and, in particular, the specific guidance on charities for the advancement of religion and believe that they have complied with their
## **Achievements and Performance**
During the year the chapel has continued to offer the new pattern of services established last year. The strong collaboration with the Inter Alios choir has remained the main focus of chapel services. The experiment of holding the secular "Music and Words" events in chapel has been popular, though the spoken service which precedes it has been poorly attended.
During the year the chapel has served the college community by hosting a number of memorial services for members of the college who have died. The secondary role of the building as a venue for musical performances remains important and the trustees are committed to making it available to all.
The trustees are aware of a number of shortcomings in the chapel building and have been planning for improvements that ought to be made when funding permits.
The trustees have renewed the Revd Nigel Cooper's contract and look forward to continuing to work with him in the future.
## **Reserves Policy**
The trustees have a policy of retaining sufficient liquid assets to support on-going commitments and any surplus cash above that level is invested for the medium term to enable the charity to maintain the Chapel at Churchill College and worship therein, in perpetuity, in accordance with the charity's objectives.
## **Financial Review**
The trustees consider that the financial statements fully reflect the financial activities and affairs of the Trust and have nothing further to report.

## **Churchill College Chapel Trust Independent Examiner's Report to the Trustees For the year ended 30 June 2025**
I report on the accounts of the Churchill College Chapel Trust for the year ended 30 June 2025, which are set out on pages 5 to 6.
## **Responsibilities and Basis of Report**
As the charity’s trustees you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (‘the Act’).
I report in respect of my examination of the Trust’s accounts carried out under section 145 of the Act and in carrying out my examination I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act.
## **Independent Examiner's Statement**
I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe that in any material respect:
- 1 accounting records were not kept in respect of the charity as required by section 130 of the Act; or 2 the accounts do not accord with those records; or
- 3 the accounts do not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the form and content of accounts set out in the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 other than any requirement that the accounts give a ‘true and fair view’ which is not a matter considered as part of an independent
I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
