TRUSTEES AP4NUAL REPORT
FOR THE YEAR ENDEID 31 DEICEMBER 2020
INTRODUCTION
The charitablc trust is constitiited by a TIu5t Decd dated 7 August 1962 and a Deed dated 6 September
1965 and its principal objcct is to promote the religious and other chai'itable work in the Pi'ovince, carried
out by the Society, the Institiite of The D(iughters of Mary Help of Christians (more familiarly known as
"The Salesian Sister5 of St John Bosco" or "Salesian Sisters"). A scheme dated l August 1998 widened
the tei'ms of the I'ru5t Deed to "shall advance the religious and other chai'ilable work of the Province of
the Society which includes England"
The Institute of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians is an international religious congregalion of
Roman Catholic women governed by its own Constitutions. Woi'ldwide it counts 11,791 membei's and is
divided into 85 pi'ovinces. 'fhe Sisters serve in 1,363 Communities across 96 Nations. Since its
foundation iii 1872 it has been engaged in religious and otlier chai'itablc work, paiticularly education and
the development of the young. Its Genei'alate is located in Rome.
The accounts accompanying this I'eport are the accounts of the charitable trnst under which the assets of
the Institute in the Province are held.
The Sisters arc ti'ained as mcmbers of thc Instittitc. Thcy i'cceive the fuithei. education and training
neces8ary to become professionally qualified to take part in the activities of the Province and are also
given the upporlunity to keep abreast of developments in their particular field of activity and lo broaden
their experience in both the Teligious and secular spheres.
COVID-19
With regards to our investments we began 2020 with a degree of optimism, however. returns were eroded
in the first quarter of 2020 following a sharp fall of 30-35 % in global equity markets as the economic
cost of the Covid-19 pandemic began to mount. Aside from coi'onavirus, we have also liad lo contend
with the uncertainty aroiind US Prcsidcntial elections and ongoing Brexit negotiations. In the same
period, it is pleasing to say that the portfolio has fully recovered and has made a positive return yeai. to
date. Whilst the outlook remains uncertain, it is important to remembei. that the investments are long
tenn. 'I'his is reflected in the return of 7.2Q/o generated by the portfolio over the last 5 years.
Investments are expected to continue to provide an income although this may be diminished in the
immediate futui'e with the current situation. Howevei., investments assets are siifficient enough to finance
thc activities of the charity if need be. Financially, the main income stream, Sistei's Salaries and Pensions,
is expected to remain reliable and relatively consistent for the next yeai. at least.
In line with Goven)ment guidance oui- Business Manager and Finance Assistant have worked from liome,
successfully, since March 2020. They both iemain working from home. Two housekeepers, from
Blundellsands and Battersea, wei'e furloughed fi'om March to September. We accegsed the Cjovernment
Job Retention scheme during this time. Risk Assessments were completed in July 2020, prior to tlie
housekeepers returning to the workplace, in accordance with Government Guidelines.

Age
In conunon with many religious orders, the Sistei's are growing older and new members are few.
The Province has both moral and legal obligations to provide for its members, who do not have resources
of their own, having covenanted tlieir income to the Charity. They have all spent a significant pai't of
their lives working with the young and the disadvantaged. As the Sisters become older, the cost of cai-ing
for them increases.
Our house in Cowley is designatcd for the care of the sick and elderly and is managed by St John of God
Hospitaller Services, with full-time employed careis. Some Sisters are still being cared for in theii. local
communities.
Over the coming years the Trustees expect more Sisters to need speciali5ed care. This will have an
impact on the work, propei*y requirements and finances of the Pi'ovince.
During the year the Trustees have given consideration to this situation, and the retirement fund 15 being
built up to provide for tlie futui'e. There is ongoing work on properties in order to makc thein more
suitable for our agein8 communities and the needs of the Mission.
The Trustees aim to enable Sisters to continue with their ministries, living in community houses as long
as possible.

SPOTLICHT
Like many people, charities and businesses around the woi'ld. we have been impacted by the effects of
Covid-19. Restrictions placed upon us tlii'ough national and i'cgional lockdowns. social distancing and the
'rule of 6, meant that many activities and gatherings planned for 2020 had to be cancelled, postponed or
changcd.
As Salesian Sisteis, we ensured that we maintained good leadership and governance of the Charity by still
holding our Trustees, Mceting5 each month via techi)ologics such as Skype and Zoom. This allowed for us to
continue our work in a way which was safe, effective and in kecping with goveriiment i'estrictions. Wc also
used iechnology to kcep our communities connected. Some pi'ovincial gatherings, such as our Provincial
Feast, were held via Zoom. This allowed all of our cominunities to paiticipate in the eveiit aiid to connect
with each other. We also produced video messages to be shared with each other and give thanks to Sr.
Connie as she caine to the end of her role as Provincial Lcadcr.
Our Social Media pagc5 and those connected to us in VIDES UK and UR Space, continued to reach young
people through their Digital Playgi'ound. Events were held throiigh Instagi'am and Zoom foi. young people lo
come together for Formation and Recreational Activitics including quizzes, study lips. sharing I'ecipes and fun
challenges. We felt that this was an esseiitial way of helping young people connect with others in a safe
space, combatting the feeling of isolation and loneliness that Covid_19 seemed to bring.
Our young Volunteers and some sisters also held a powerful and successful campaign to prornote Mental
Healtli Awai'cnc5s Week. They made and shared videos of their own struggles willi Mental Health, shar¢d
how volunteering helped them, gave tips on how to help Mental Health and also whcrc other young people
could access help in limes of struggle. This campaign was successful and lots of peoplc engaged with it,
higlilighting its nccd and relevance in Ilie currenl cliinale.
Another way of rcacliing out and connecting in our Inission was our Salesian Online Book Club. As we
journey towards the 150 Anniversary of the foiindation of our Institute we wantcd to promote tlie figure and
spii'itualily of Si. Mary Mazzarello in a new way. We pi'ovided each pei'son with a copy of the book,
"Jouiiieys to thc l.Icart" as another way of l'eaching out and providing some formation in SalLsian Spirituality.
Around 35 people fmin around the United Kingdom (and I person fi'om Ge1'i￿any) signcd up to paiticipate in
this. This Book Club moving online was due to Covid-19 but in reality it has had a greater impact as mo
people can participate regardless of geO￿?phiCal location.
Although we havc had Inany wonderful experiences of using technology to continue our mission and ability
lo connccl with others, we have been well aware of the Digital Poveily present lo oui. young people and the
disparity tliis crcales in Education. With the closures of schools and leaming moving online for many
Students wc bceame aware of a high number of young pcople who did not have access to a device in order to
access theii. teaching and leai'ning opportunities. In collaboi'ation with the school and Local Authority, we
donatcd £50,000 lo thc St. John Bosco's Arts College to Inect thc shortfall in funding for all students to have
a device they can use to access online learning.
We have also reached out to families and young people in need around the piovince by providing each local
coinmunity with some money which will be used to provide food or Lai'e packages for Christinas.
We have been limited in what wc could do in 2020 but we have ti-led to l'each out as InLich as possible lo
ensure that we can continue to help Iho8e in most need. Covid-19 caused many things to be cancelled but

INSTITUTE OFTHE DAUGIITEIRS OF MARY HY.I,P OF CHRI.8TIANS
OT14ERWISE SALESIAN SISTERS OF ST JOHN BOSCO
TRUSTF.F.S ANIYUAL REPORT
FOR THF. YF.AR ENDED 31 DECEMBER 2020
FINANCIAL REI VIEI W
The charity income of £807,994 in 2020 (20J9.' £1,172,960) and expenditure of £1,244,877 (2019:
£1,347,630) resulted in net expenditui'e before net gains on investments in the year of £436,883 (2019:
£174,670).
Financial Dependence
The Institute underpins the finances of the Province.
During the year the Sisters have received some small sums from benefactors for theii. woi'k. Unless the
donor states a specific use for such otTerings they are credited to the Gencral Fund to enable the Sisters,
as part of theii cornmitmcnt to education, to subsidise educative events, with related tt2vel and
accommodation costs, for young people.
The Charity has links with VIDES UK which was set up by the Salesian Sisters. The Trustees of the
Sale%iaii Sisters do not foi'm the majority of Trnstees of this Charity, which is not in the dii'cct control of
the Salesian Sisters. The Charity made an annual donation to VIDES UK of £1 0,000.
VIDES UK - Charity number 1166876 promotes training and development of young people for
voluntaiy seivice at home and abroad. VIDES UK incoiporated as VIDES UK (CIO) on l July 2017.
Reserves Policy
At 31 Deceinbcr 2020 tlie Charity's net assets stood at £14m (2019: £14.3m). Of this, £7.47rn (2019-
£7.57m) rcpi'escnts properties and related capital commitments itqiiired for the continuing work of the
charity. These cannot be rcalised without undermining ihe charily's activities and a designated fund
cxists to reflect this requiiEment. bunds of some £6.51 m (2019: £6.34m) have also been designated in
respect of the chai'ity's on-going commitment to pi'ovide foi. th¢ cai'c of the Congregation's members.
The I'i'ustees estimate that a fund in excess of thi5 sum will be required to provide fi]Ily for members.
We are keeping in mind that the reeornmended amount needed in reserve for each Sister is in the region
of £125,000, incTeasing to £225.000 if residential or nursing care is required.
The balance in General funds of £6 Ik (2019.. £416k), equivalent to less than I months, expenditure, will
continue to go towai'ds funding othei. activities of the charity. The Trustees will continue to look to ways
to build up its general funds in future years.
Investment Powers, Policy and Performance
In accordance with the trust deed, the Trustees have the power to invest in such stocks. shares.
investments and propeity in the UK as they see fit.
Thcy have also allocated sums to an intcinal retirernent fund placed with Bai'clilys Wealth. This fund
amounted to £6.77m on 31 December 2020, an inci'ease of 4.30/0 dui'ing the year. Given the level of risk
Ihe Trustees al'e willing to undertake. the retuins are satisfactoi'y.
