To maintain a worldwide fellowship of Christians united in prayer, worship and service 4. To promote conditions in society favourable to stable family life and the protection of children 5. To help those whose family life has met with adversity ## **Summary of the main activities in relation to these Objectives** : In planning the activities, the trustee board have had regard to the Charity Commission guidance on public benefit, including the specific guidance for charities involved in the advancement of religion. During the year: - met every month [11 times] except August 2025 including a Strategy Planning Session in April 2025 - hosted the Diocese of Exeter Mothers’ Union Spring Council Meeting AGM and Members’ Meeting, held on 10[th] June 2025 at St Rita’s Centre, Honiton - hosted the Autumn Members Meeting, held on 14[th] November 2025 at the Boniface Centre, Crediton – where ~ - business included the encouraging of members across the diocese to ‘Join Us Join In’ by organising displays of knitted chains and posters to help raise awareness of Domestic Abuse during the 16 Days of Activism 2025 - all Mothers’ Union Trustees underwent safeguarding training at the start of this Triennium [2025–2027] - a Cluster Meeting was held in the Exeter Mothers’ Union Office to share stories to encourage other Cluster contacts; alongside events being hosted during the year across Devon and organised via the Clusters, with invitations extended via the Mothers’ Union Diocesan Office for other members to participate and ‘Join In’ - The Revd Tracey Voysey contributed to the Mothers’ Union 2025 Prayer Diary - The Revd Alison Hardy was licensed as our second Diocese of Exeter Mothers’ Union Chaplain by the Archdeacon of Barnstaple at her residence on 26[th] March 2025 - The Revd John Sweatman has been in contact with both prisons in the diocese, and has made progress towards re–establishing the Big Book Scheme in Channings Wood, and also how best to support prisons work to help build relationships with families for Exeter Prison - one of the highlights of the year was the Mothers’ Union Commissioning Service hosted in Exeter Cathedral on 16[th] September 2025; with the Bishop of Exeter, the Rt Revd Dr Mike Harrison presiding and Bishop of Crediton, the Rt Revd Moira Astin preaching ## **Achievements and performance** The structure of Mothers’ Union in our Diocese, with Clusters, Branches, Diocesan Members’ Groups and individual Diocesan Members, continues to adapt to changing circumstances. More branches have chosen to close and their members to become Diocesan Members Groups with the additional freedom this gives to operate without the need for Officers. By the end of 2025, total membership stood at 478, of whom about two–thirds were members of the 20 remaining branches, the rest meeting in 10 Diocesan Members’ Groups or attending events across the Diocese. Some of our members are vulnerable and unable to get to events due to age and underlying health matters so the Trustees are most grateful to everyone who has continued to support them by visiting, communication by phone and writing to them to keep in touch. ## **Summary of the main achievements of the Charity during the year** : ## **Governance** There is a responsibility to ensure that the Diocese of Exeter Mothers’ Union meets the requirements of the Charity Commissioners, particularly with regard to safeguarding, data protection and financial management, and that correct accounting procedures are followed. These matters are continually under review. - our Diocesan President and Vice–President represented Diocese of Exeter Mothers’ Union by attending Provincial Conferences and Zoom Meetings during 2025 - Trustee 2025 Induction Pack for new Triennium 2025–2027, circulated in November 2024, to ensure Trustees are aware of their Governance responsibilities Page 4 - Trustees also continue to request Risk Assessments for all Mothers’ Union venues, meetings and projects within the diocese, both at local level and for diocesan–wide events - during 2025 Trustees continued to work on new Governance documents which have been issued via our Mothers’ Union First Trustee, with the option of joining the Mothers’ Union South West CIO, to be constituted in 2026 Ongoing work for 2026: - responding to a diocesan Strategic priority on **Missional Leadership** by encouraging members to develop within their leadership roles within their churches and in order to develop other members - continuing to review Governance documents - continuing to progress the relationship with Mothers’ Union South West CIO - updating the membership regarding the Mothers’ Union South West CIO at Spring Council AGM and Members’ Meetings - investigating options towards best utilisation of the Sidwell Mothers’ Union Office space ## **Database** During the year the following was achieved: - link with Mothers’ Union Central Office Portal Support - commencement of use of Direct Debits for efficiency and to reduce administration Ongoing work for 2026 includes: - ensuring that all additions and amendments to membership details are correct - continuing to liaise with Portal Support on behalf of the Mothers’ Union Central Charity in London regarding updates of our Database - continuing to encourage the use of Direct Debits - forming new Diocesan Membership into groups to ensure no–one is left out ## **Safeguarding** During the year the following was achieved: - our Safeguarding Lead Trustee reported to each Trustee meeting - our Safeguarding Lead Trustee requested DBS / Diocesan Safeguarding training relating to all Trustees - maintained communication with the Mothers’ Union Central Charity in London Safeguarding Team - participated in Safeguarding Community of Interest meetings during the year Ongoing work for 2026–2027 includes: - continuing to review the Risk Assessment Procedure - reviewing Safeguarding Policies - responding to concerns raised by members or clergy regarding any safeguarding issues - supporting members in obtaining DBS certification where appropriate ## **AFIA** During the year the following was achieved: - responding to the diocesan focus towards **Missional work with Children and Young People** - endeavouring to find how best to work with the Diocesan Children and Young Families’ Mission Enabler - continuing to express gratitude for, and continuing to encourage Mothers’ Union members to raise funds for local projects - considering the best use of funds and developing new ways of supporting young people who are disadvantaged and young carers to enjoy outings that might otherwise not be possible due to lack of resources ## **Faith** During the year the following was achieved: - monthly Cathedral Prayer services were held in Exeter Cathedral, led by the Trustees, Chaplains and Clusters - Mothers’ Union Members held services and Quiet Days around the diocese - opening prayers and Midday Prayers offered at all Trustee meetings - our gratitude to the Revd Canon Cate Edmonds and the Cathedral team, for their contribution towards the Mothers’ Union Diocesan Commissioning Service held in the Lady Chapel in September 2025 - our Faith Lead Trustee organised our Annual Mothers’ Union Retreat at St Rita’s Centre, Honiton - a Trustee represented Diocese of Exeter attending the Commissioning of new Trustees of the Central Charity at a service in London on 24[th] March 2025, which included the new Worldwide President, Kathleen Snow - a Trustee represented Diocese of Exeter attending the Commissioning of Canterbury Provincial President Service in Southwark on 21[st] June 2025 - two Trustees attended the Faith Community of Interest Zoom meeting hosted during the year - Mothers’ Union Wave of Prayer Links with Diocese of Exeter resources circulated to all Mothers’ Union members, in preparation for service held in local churches / groups - Mothers’ Union Chaplain contributed to Mothers’ Union 2025 Prayer Diary - Mothers’ Union Diocesan Chaplains led Eucharist Services at both Spring and Autumn Council Meetings - the two Mothers’ Union Diocesan Chaplains generously supported the membership in many ways - the Prayer Network continues to enable prayer for members in particular need - a former Mothers’ Union Diocesan chaplain continued with daily email messages, which commenced during Covid, and were valued by many Plans for 2026–27 include: - encouraging members across the diocese to be part of the powerhouse of prayer during our 150[th] Anniversary Year - encouraging and continue improving our links with Clergy and Licensed Lay Ministers in the Diocese - inspiring parish representatives, clergy and members to attend the Festival Banner Service being held in Exeter Cathedral on 20[th] March 2026, both to celebrate 150 years of Mothers’ Union in the United Kingdom, and highlight our work in supporting the diocesan vision: to **pray** , to **grow** in our Christian discipleship and to **serve** the people of Devon and beyond with joy - to publish a book to give thanks for the life and Christian witness of the late Revd Caroline Luff, endorsed by her family, recording the reflections that she had offered as a resource to members - Diocese of Exeter Mothers’ Union Trustee contributing to the Mothers’ Union 2026 Prayer Diary - continue to host local Mothers’ Union Quiet Days and Celebration events e.g. Lady Day, Mary Sumner Day ## **Outreach Initiatives** During the year the following was achieved: - in response to an article written by National Programmes Lead, Canon Emily Brailsford from the Central Chairty and featured in the Central Readers Council publication ‘Transforming Ministry' [Spring 2025], Mothers’ Union has had a presence at the Diocesan LLM Conference in Torquay in February 2025, and also at Diocese of Exeter Mission Shed events hosted during remainder of 2025 - and following the LLM Conference in 2025, all Mothers’ Union members were encouraged them to pray for work associated amongst children and young families undertaken across the Diocese of Exeter – to which we **Page 6** have also witnessed how God has answered the prayers being offered - seventy woolly sheep were knitted for the Devon County Show hosted in June 2025 - donations of phones and bicycles were provided for refugees - contributions towards delivery of sewing machines and ancillary items for the Mothers’ Union in Melanesia Thank you for the variety of woolly sheep being used during the Devon County Show and other Children and Young People’s events across the county Plans for 2026–2027 include: - promoting the work of Mothers’ Union by sharing stories at the Festival Banner Service in Exeter Cathedral, and the generous offer of the use of the Bishop of Exeter’s Hospitality tent - continue the re–establishing of links with prisons in diocese through Big Book Share scheme - strengthening links with schools through story telling and the Teddy Small project - continuing and extending involvement with baptism families - developing ‘church’ with young people through games and play - continuing outreach to those with dementia via visits and comfort blankets - provision of hearts cushion to reduce pain after mastectomy surgery - and many other small initiatives led by groups of members within their own locality ## **Social Policy** There are two major strands of work in this area: campaigning to eliminate Gender Based Violence in all its forms and Raising Awareness of Modern Day Slavery During the year the following were achieved: - a very good response received following a request in Roots and Shoots in September 2025 to contribute towards the knitted chains links, leading to contact with those outside the membership - the knitted links for displays in different venues across the county during the 16 Days of Activism [25th November 2025 – 10th December 2025] to highlight the deaths as a consequence of Gender–Based Violence across Devon [252 links and informative posters, Red Chair displays etc.] - one Mothers’ Union display in a local park continued until February 2026, and was visible during visits from BBC / ITV Plans for 2026–2027 include: - continued awareness raising of the issue of Gender Based violence - continued involvement with awareness raising of Modern Day Slavery - further developing members ability to acknowledge the full extent of Modern Day Slavery, and how to report concerns - providing resources to enable members to organise displays to highlight the plight of Modern Slavery as part of 16 Days of Activism Page 7 ## **Overseas** During the year the following was achieved: - final shipment towards resourcing our Mothers’ Union members with sewing machines and other sewing equipment despatched to the Solomon Islands, in the Province of Melanesia - links with Melanesia featured via Central Charity, including news story published on their web site, their Facebook page and in ‘Spring 2026’ edition of Connected Magazine - Stitching hope into the fabric of lives – with love – from Devon to the Solomon Islands Plans for 2026–27 include: - re–establishing stronger links with our overseas link dioceses - developing relationships with the Diocesan links - encouraging support of the Central Charity fundraising appeals - providing resources for a secondary school in Uganda that has no books ## **Communication** During the year the following was achieved: - maintenance of links with Mothers’ Union@Home members - produced two issues of ‘MU Matters’ [our Mothers’ Union diocesan magazine] - maintained our Instagram feed for Exeter Mothers’ Union - sending out Good News Stories and Diocesan President’s Letter, in addition to monthly news received from our Central Charity - hosting a fundraiser Big Band Concert - attending a Conference at Salisbury to communicate the work undertaken in the diocese - involvement in a PowerPoint presentation given to communicate work by Mothers’ Union amongst young people at the Annual Gathering hosted in Oxford Plans for 2026–27: - creating a diocesan Mothers’ Union Exeter Facebook page to continue improving our online presence to share stories of our work at local, national and international level - continuing to encourage new Mothers’ Union speakers to share positive stories about our work - preparing pull–up banners and bookmarks to celebrate our 150[th] Anniversary and to raise awareness of the work of Mothers’ Union - preparing information packs to be handed out at events during the year Page 8 ## **Financial Review** At 31 December 2025, total receipts were £41,821 and total payments £37,368, resulting in a surplus for the year of £4,453. This contrasts with a deficit in 2024 of £4,977. Two items contributing significantly to this were the inclusion in 2025 of arrears of tax recoverable from Gift Aid [£4,824, representing tax clamed for years 2021 and 2022]; and the inclusion in 2024 of arrears of £3,041 payable to MU Enterprises for purchase of stock in previous years. Total receipts into the unrestricted General fund were £34,008, increased from £31,633 in 2024. £11,780 of this amount was collected as subscriptions on behalf of the MU Central Charity [Mary Sumner House], including £95 paid for 2026. Subscriptions for Diocese of Exeter Mothers’ Union direct costs amounted to £6,531 [£60 for 2026]. These may be compared with £13,498 and £7,038, respectively, in 2024, reflecting a substantial reduction in paying members, [partially offset by the increase in subscription rates from £35 per member in 2024 to £38 in 2025]. A further £3,097 was received as income to the Diocesan General Fund from fund raising by the branches and groups, and donations by individual members. In addition, a legacy of £1,000, unrestricted, was received from the estate of Anne Medhurst. Total expenditure for the year from the General Fund was £31,132, down from £36,195 in 2024. Designated and restricted funds are those funds providing resources for Mothers’ Union projects, including both MU Exeter projects and those of the Central Charity. Exeter Mothers’ Union is moving away from restricted funds in favour of designated funds, that allow the trustees to re-allocate resources from one project to another if it proves impossible to progress a particular project for any reason. This requires members and groups to raise funds for Mothers’ Union projects in general rather than for individual projects. They may, however, express a preference among projects and the Trustees will continue to respect the donors’ intentions as far as possible for the projects so designated. Fund movements are listed in the table on page 11. AFIA and the Big Book Share are the two main Exeter projects. Grants for AFIA totalling £4,300 were made from the available balance [£4,943] brought forward from 2024, with a further agreed grant of £500 paid in January 2026. Balances of £5,144 [AFIA] and £3,117 [Big Book Share, providing books for prisoners in Devon prisons and their children] were carried forward for future use. Restricted and designated funds for Mary Sumner House projects amounting to £2,487 were raised in 2025, mainly for Overseas and Literacy and Financial Education Projects [MULFEP], and £1,937 of these were transferred to the Central Charity before the year end. A further £394 from the General Fund for the MSH Make a Mother’s Day appeal was raised as proceeds of the South Devon Big Band Concert organised in March by the South Devon cluster. Receipts and payments are analysed in the accounts on pages 12-13. The 5-yearly rent review in April 2025 resulted in an increased rent payable on the office premises in St Sidwell’s Centre, from £1,613 to £1,747 in 2025, and £1,770 pa in a full year. The Trustees agreed to increase the individual MU subscription to £40 a year for 2026 [up from £38 in 2025]: of this, £25 [up from £24.50] is to be collected on behalf of the Central Charity and £15 [up from £13.50] to be retained by Exeter Mothers’ Union. ## **Reserves Policy** It is our policy to maintain at least £20,000 investment in a COIF Charities Deposit Fund with CCLA. This is there as a Reserve Fund and any interest gained is currently re-invested. The balance at the year-end was £25,007 including the interest £1,025 received in 2025. It has not yet proved necessary to draw down from the investment account to maintain cashflow, despite the deficits in earlier years. I report in respect of my examination of the Trust’s accounts carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act and in carrying out my examination, I have followed the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act. ## Independent examiner's statement I have completed my examination.
