Mothers’ Union in the Diocese of Canterbury
Registered Charity No 250124
Accounts for the year ended 31°t December 2023
Annual Report 2023
Last year was a challenging one for us. We welcomed Debra Smith from Westgate on to our Trustee Board. We also said goodbye to Sandra Goodey in September. We will miss Sandra and her husband Phil and we thank them for the support they have given us over the past years. Sandra prepared our Wave of Prayer and also the Advent Service. We are continuing to work as a small trustee board and share the work among us. We are also without any Archdeaconry Presidents. We are grateful to Margaret Horwood who arranges the Cathedral Prayer time and helped to plan the Advent Service. We would like to thank Danielle Ligneau Wilton for her continued work with our overseas links.
In May we held another of our popular pop up teas. This time in Margate.
August was a very busy time. We held our Bible auction on Mary Sumner day it is amazing the items members bring along to sell. Jackie and her helpers once again prepared a splendid lunch. Much needed funds were raised for our AFIA holiday booked for 2024.
| was invited to speak during the morning service at Harbledown. This was a new venture for me and | was nervous. AFIA. We are very grateful to Rita’s daughter Hazel who did a sponsored walk and swim in memory of her mother. This raised the magnificent total of £1600 towards our AFIA holiday. We did send two families on a caravan holiday to New Romney. They both had a wonderful time and were so grateful.
In September Sue Spillett, Jackie Curd and myself attended the annual conference in York. This was an interesting day. The day started with a sketch from the local Mothers Union group. We heard from our Worldwide President, she talked at length about her visits during the year. We met members of the staff from Mary Sumner House. The day finished with evensong in the cathedral. It was worth standing in the pouring rain outside the Minster waiting to be let in.
Members Meetings - Our members meetings this year all started with a service of Holy Communion and in November we welcomed our Provincial President Kathryn Anderson to speak to us. She even came on her birthday. Once again Jackie and her team provided a lovely lunch.
Advent Service — Our Advent Service was led by our Chaplain Canon Emma Pennington and we welcomed the Dean The Very Reverend David Monteith as our preacher. David is an avid supporter and member of Mothers Union.
Prisons Marianna and a few members from Maidstone have been involved with work in the prisons. They were invited to attend the adventl service and we gave Christmas cards to the prisoners.
Shoeboxes ~ Several branches took part in the annual shoebox appeal by Blytheswood. These boxes are always gratefully received. A lady from Blytheswood came to talk to one branch.
Looking Ahead -Edna Tupper and other members have been supporting looking ahead. They have provided necessary items to the young people living in these flats. Edna always makes sure these people have a chocolate egg at Easter and a small gift at Christmas.
