D iocesan resident P ’ s eport 2024 R
The third, and final, year of this triennium continued to present challenges in the development and growth of Mothers’ nion in this iocese of ichfieldU D L . Membership has fallen slightly from 2023. This is understandable considering the demographic of membership and outside factors like the continuing rising cost of living. oweH ver, the need for the work of Mothers’ nion also continues to rise U and we are grateful to all who have continued their membership, and who work hard to support those in our diocese, nation, and overseas, who need that little bit extra. nce again there was a good response from memO bers in the return of membership forms and subscriptions efore our diocesanb -set deadline of the end of February, this is a usy time for drian, our administrator and we are all b A indebted to his hard work in eeping the office running smoothlyk . Illness and relocation have continued to provide logistical difficulties when arranging trustee meetings ut, with the aid of oom, the trustee oard met for b Z b seven main meetings, with more informal meetings on several occasions when quick discussions and/or decisions were required. nce again, I am grateful to all O trustees who have overcome personal challenges to e at meetings and to b continue to contribute, remotely at times, to the ongoing smooth running of the organisation. Three diocesan meetings were held during the year, atherings in May and G November, as well as the AGM in ulyJ . The attendance at these meetings continued the trend shown in 2024 of increasing numbers. Speakers at all meetings were well received. t the Spring athering we welcomed mily A G E Brailsford, ead of programmes at Mary Sumner ouse, who updated us on the H H Rise pU ! programme, raising awareness of domestic abuse. The speaker at the AGM was Steve acJ kson of the Farming Community etworN k, the organisation we continue to support y nitting woolly hats lab k belled with the FCN helpline label. yB the end of 2024 the total number of hats continued to grow and several ranches b have since asked a speaker from FCN to ranch meetingsb . The utumn gathering A was lessed y the attendance of ishop Matthew arb b B P ker who spoke on wellbeing.
As in previous years we provided support in the Churches’ Tent at Staffordshire County Show. eaH vy overnight rain made the second day interesting ut, as eb ver, Mothers’ nion memU bers are resourceful and everyone coped! My thanks go to those who olunteered to mav ke the refreshments on the two days of the Show. I know our presence is much appreciated. In the spring there were elections for the iocesan resident and trustee oard D P b members for the Triennium 2025-2027. s I had completed almost years in the A 5

role of iocesan resident it was time to step down, in line with our ConstitutionD P . Deb Tudor was elected to the role, along with new mem5 bers of the oardb . This will e a challenging period of change for allb .
There was a roP vincial Conference held on oom in anuaryZ J . While oom ery Z v much has its enefits it is not the same as meeting in person which did happen inb November. eD b and I met with other outgoing and new diocesan presidents from across Canterbury roP vince at igh eigh Conference Centre in ertfordshireH L H . It is always good to catch up with those who have ecome friends as well as b colleagues over the years. I shall miss the camaraderie and shared experiences of the other DPs ut not the ourney on the Mb j 6, M1, M25 and the A10! The occasion encompassed many farewells, not only to other DPs ut to Sheran arper, the b H outgoing Worldwide resident, athryn nderson, roP K A P vincial resident and eP R v Emma amH -Riche, roP vincial Chaplain who were coming to the end of their terms ‘ ’ of office. s well as this, the only in personA meeting, at igh eigh there were H L several other regular meetings, such as the Midlands Cluster group, DPs from Great ritain and ll Ireland as well as meetings for Communities of Interest, all B A held on oomZ . All trustees are members of Communities of Interest and attend meetings mostly via oomZ . These include prison work, faith, safeguarding and so on, ut seem to b lack the focus and direction of the old ‘Units’. My thanks go to Celia, eD b, ulia J and atherine who haK ve all een inb volved in areas of work reflecting their special interests. drian has een inA b volved with database meetings as MSH made great strides towards the installation of a new central database and website.
As we did last year we celebrated Mary Sumner ay on D 9[th] ugust, when aA bout fifty members of Mothers’ nion an increase on 202U ( 3!) oined the congregation inj the Midday ucharist SerE vice in ichfield Cathedral, to celeL brate the life and work of our founder. Canon ndrew Stead oA versaw the service with members of Mothers’ nion taU king part in readings and prayers and our iocesan Chaplain, D Rev assica CastilloJ - urley presiding at the ucharistB E . fter the serA vice we en oyed fellowship in the Close y sharing pacj b ked lunches on The each‘ B ’, an event put on y the Cathedral during the summer, surrounded y children playingb b in the sand and paddling pools. oyous occasion which I hope may continueA j . I am sad to say that during 2024 our other iocesan Chaplain, eD R v athy TrimK by left to take up a post in the iocese of ewcastle in ew South Wales, ustraliaD N N A . We wish her every lessing in her new role and gib ve thanks for her contribution in this diocese in her time as a chaplain.

There was no national gathering in 2024 ut a prob vincial meeting was arranged in Oxford in uneJ . I was unable to attend as I was on holiday ut there were seb veral attendees from the iocese who had en oyed the dayD j . nother proA vincial gathering is planned for 2025, with plans for worldwide celebrations eing made b for 2026 when the organisation will commemorate 150 years.
I was privileged to speak on the work of Mothers’ nion at iocesan Synod in U D March. It had een a few years since Synod had had an update on oth diocesan b b work and that done more widely in the is country and overseas. I am pleased that the presentation was warmly received. I have en oyed speaj king at several ranch b meetings and attended oth uiet ays, which were well supportedb Q D . The nature of the uiet ays, including location, timetaQ D ble and cost, is to e reb -assessed y b the new trustee oardb .
As stated already we continue to collaborate with FCN and support other pro ects j by writing Christmas cards for prisoners in the prisons in the iocese, along 9 D with donating iscuits, aster eggs and sweetsb E . Children’s oob ks have een b donated to a prison isitor centre and a rev quest for toys is eing consideredb . Support for women’s refuges is strong across the diocese and several members in the Stafford area attended a igil in Stafford during the v 16 ays of ctiD A vism against ender ased iolenceG B V . efugees, the homeless and care leaR vers are also among groups supported in diverse ways y separate groups or ranchesb b .
My thanks first go to my fellow trustees for all their hard work during the year. We are few in number and many of us have faced personal difficulties and I am grateful for the support they have given me during what has een another b challenging year. I also want to thank drian, our iocesan dministrator, for his A D A contribution to the smooth running of the office and his expertise especially regarding our own database and financial matters. ut most of all, thanB k you to YOU, our members as you continue to faithfully support the work of Mothers’ Union y your outreach pro ects, fundraising and your prayers, especially as b j Mothers’ nion in ichfield iocese egins a new chapterU L D b .

In anuary I contacted the eJ R v Sarah Morris who is the chaplain at MH P raD ke Hall and who is also the managing chaplain in the iocese ecause I had lost D b contact with the chaplain at aO kwood and Featherstone risonP . She told me that there is no Church of ngland chaplain at aE O kwood at the moment and that a new chaplain had een appointed at Featherstone and his name is ichard Wallisb R . I had a lovely email from Chris Milton at oD vegate rison thanP king Mothers nion U for the Christmas cards and also for the iscuits and sweets we sentb .
Adrian forwarded me an email from a ady called icola annon who is employedL N G by PACT (Prison, dA vice and Care Trust) at Swinfen prison as a family iaison L officer. PACT is a national charity which supports prisoners, people with convictions and their children and families. They provide life changing services at every stage of the criminal ustice process, in court, in prison and on release in j the community, so they ery much fit in with Mothers nion aluesv U v . icola neededN books to set up a iL brary for the family isitor centre so that children could v choose a oob k to read when isiting the centre and tav ke home with them if they wished. Following the appeal for oob ks I sent out the response was nothing less than magnificent. I delivered the oob ks in May, and my car oot and seats were b stacked high with oob ks. icola wasnN ’t available on the day I isited ut a prison v b officer who is involved with family isits indly helped me unloadv k . e was ery H v impressed with the number of oob ks and y the uality and arietyb q v . icola sent a N very grateful thanks to you all.
I attended the Mary Sumner ay serD vice at the cathedral which was well attended by Mothers nion and en oyed eU j R v essicaJ ’s sermon and celebration was excellent, and she did ery well not to trip up ov ver her estments which were v certainly not meant for anyone as small as her.
I was approached y mily railsford to e part of a steering group she is setting b E B b up to formulate a signposting document which shows what work other charities do in prison and collate contact details. It is hoped that this will allow members to get involved in pro ects they feel called to do ej .g. letter writing to prisoners and carry it out in a safe way with charities who are already doing this particular type of work and have the correct safeguards and infrastructure in place we held our first meeting on 23[rd] of ugust y oomA b Z . The next meeting of the steering group was held on the 9[th] of ctoO ber where we explored in more detail the feasibility of holding family fun days for prisoners and their families. I was not against these proposals, ut I struggled to see how they could e arranged y Mothersb b b ’ nion U in some of our prisons.
Prison week egan on Sunday b 13[th] of ctoO ber and we ordered a leaflet for every branch in the diocese which arrived late from the printers to MSH and therefor to us which in turn put pressure on drian to get them out to ranches in time for A b the launch.

It has een a prib vilege to serve as a trustee for Mothers’ nion in ichfield U L Diocese over the last triennium, 2021-24. aH ving stepped acb k from the role, it is good to reflect on 2024, which was my ninth year in a trustee position.
As the year 2024 egan, trustees were mindful of the approaching elections midb - year. I gave much thought to members nown to me who hak ve ualities and sq kills compatible with the trustee role. I approached those on my personal list to invite them to consider standing for election.
As the year progressed and our election process was completed, along with other outgoing trustees, it was gratifying to find ichfield iocese MothersL D ’ nion U refreshed with new trustees to work with eD b Tudor in her new role as our Diocesan residentP . I am delighted to see some of those whom I approached last year now elected to our trustee group.
Although I was in ew ealand at that time, I was aN Z ble to oin ej D b and elen H (others perhaps) for a oom WaZ ve of prayer meeting held am MT and 0pm 9 G 1 NZ time. It was lovely to e part of that prayer time using my mob bile screen and seeing tiny pictures of them othb . 😊
In 2024, eD b Tudor and I continued to post regularly to our MU ichfield iocese L D Facebook page. Mothers’ nion eing a worldwide has enaU b bled me, at times, to connect with other members living many miles away.
One such connection in 2024 was with a member in ew ealand otearoa, who N Z A shared the location of a stain glass window commemorating Mary Sumner, found in the small church of ll Saints, ltham, TaranaA E ki egionR . So, when in NZ in February, we, aD vid and I, made a little pilgrimage to ltham where we receiE ved a warm welcome from aren Christian window eK ( xpert), looked around the church and en oyed the treasured Mary Sumner windowj .
L ki e other trustees, I oined meetings online when our j DP was unavailable. This was the case in pril where I represented A LDMU at the Midlands Cluster of DPs. The DPs of the Midland Cluster discussed the oint input at the roj P vincial Members Gathering that took place on 22 une in J Oxford. I provided notes from the meeting for elen and was aH ble to send some photographs to mily railsford E B (DP Derby ioceseD ) who prepared a power-point activity for that meeting. I was unable to attend the roP vincial Members atheringG . Two Communities of Interest CoI( ) have een within my area of concern during b the last triennium. The ise pR U ! CoI met several times during 2024, chaired y b Emily railsfordB . ‘Rise pU !’ is about domestic abuse and empowers our members to work locally within our churches to challenge iolence within family v relationships, particularly spouses and partners.

There are regular ystander WeB binars now available in respect of ISR E pU ! This is important training input for members/groups wishing to work towards a ISR E pU ! Silver wardA . The oom meetings are well attended across ll Ireland and Z A UK.
Our membership has embraced the ‘Rise pU !’ campaign throughout 2024. I am confident we shall together continue to campaign with ‘Rise pU !’ and the 16 ays D of ctiA vism against ender ased iolence in oG B V N vember.
‘Flourishing Families’ is the reiteration of MU parenting programme, refreshed and updated to e applicab ble to current matters. It remains unclear who is leading this CoI at Mary Sumner ouse and whether any online meetings haH ve yet taken ‘ ’ place. I have continued to e our diocesan representatib ve to Flourishing Families CoI and hope to continue going forwards.
At the end of May, like other members, I oined the Churches Tent at the j Staffordshire Show to serve refreshments to any comers. The day was ery wet v with the consequence that our tent was full. It was delightful to share the refreshment-giving with Megan ittwood, one of your new trusteesP .
Once again in summer 2024, I wrote a short piece for the Shrewsbury Chronicle Crosstal k about Mothers’ nionU . It was printed around Mary Sumner ay, D 9 August 2024. It is disappointing to report that the Shrewsbury Chronicle no longer exists. ut while it was printed, it was a good way of putting MothersB ’ Union in front of the readership.
L ki e my fellow trustees, I was part of the Mary Sumner ay serD vice at ichfield L Cathedral.
During 2024, trustees endeavoured to continue isiting ranches and groups to v b lead sessions on Ma‘ king a ifferenceD ’. elen and I led a session H ‘ Ma k ing a D ifference ’ at St swaldO ’s, swestry on Thursday, O 11 prilA . The meeting was well attended y memb bers from the deanery including swestry, oO G bowen, Sellatyn and innerley memK bers. It was ery en oyav j ble to meet those members again.
Along with other trustees, I attended and co-led a ranch meeting at elsall on b P 1 July. It was a good meeting with positive feedback from the membership that were present.
I have twice attended as the leader spea/ ker at St ilesG . In the summer, we had an informal session writing Christmas greetings cards for prison detainees and also for the many care-leavers supported y St iles each Christmas timeb G . The session at the start of September was called ‘ H ow well do you now your i k b b le – ’ b uilding ridges b . It was well received with plenty of audience participation. few A other ranches hab ve participated in that session.

The Shrewsbury and Wrekin eanery Synod of which I am currently a memD b met in ulyJ . t last, I tooA k an agenda slot to raise awareness of MU locally, nationwide and internationally. Members were made familiar with MU ISR E pU ! campaign.
The September uiet ay at Shallowford had a thoughtful programmeQ D . eR vd oe Z Braven-Giles led us so ery well and I en oyed and enefited from the dayv j b . Throughout 2024, drian alphreyman has een eA P b xcellent as our Financial Administrator. I take this opportunity to thank him for his conscientious and tolerant approach to his role. During the last three years one piece of work undertaken y the trustee stands b out in my mind the updating of our – LDMU Constitution and egulationsR . Although trustees were involved in the discussion and decisions, it has een to b ’ Helen alfreyP s credit that this piece of work was pushed to its over-due conclusion. This has een an important, indeed ital, piece of worb v k, discussing and agreeing the fine detail after which elen continued to moH ve it all forward until finally LDMU constitution and regulations is correctly registered with the Charity Commission. That eing done, b LDMU can go forward confidently, enabled by working documents that will guide and enable the new trustees and eD b Tudor in her DP role.

DIOCEAN INVOLVEMENT
Twice a year we are invited to take part in the 24hours of prayer, eing offered b two of the 03 -minute sessions to host. Independent Examiner’s Report to the trustees of the Mothers Union Diocese of Lichfield Charity Number 249942
I report on the accounts of the Trust for the year ended 31 December 2024, which are set out on pages 1 to 6.
Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner
The charity’s trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts. The charity’s trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year under section 144 of the Charities Act 2011 (the Charities Act)) and that an independent examination is needed.
It is my responsibility to:
- examine the accounts under section 145 of the Charities Act;
• to follow the procedures laid down in the General Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Charities Act; and
- to state whether particular matters have come to my attention.
Basis of examiner’s statement
My examination was carried out in accordance with the General Directions given by the Charity Commissioners. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from the trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a ‘true and fair view’ and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below.
Independent examiner’s statement
In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention
-
1) which gives me reasonable cause to believe that, in any material respect, the requirements
-
to keep accounting records in accordance with section 130 of the Charities Act; and
• to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and to comply with the accounting requirements of the Charities Act
have not been met.
- 2) to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
Signed:
J Alexander
