b|202|3|17| 3 **A** nnual eport 202 **R 3** ## Trustees report for the year ended **31** st **D** ecem **b** er 202 **3** The Trustees present their nnual eport and Financial Statements for the year A R ended 31st ecemD ber 2023. ## **D** iocesan resident **P ’** s eport 202 **R 3** The second year of the triennium continued to present challenges to the development and growth of Mothers’ nion in this iocese of ichfieldU D L . The changes to the structure of membership, with the distinction etween ranch, b b deanery and diocesan members gone, mean that all are simply a Mem‘ ber of Mothers’ nion in the iocese of ichfieldU D L ’. This gives all members equal status when it comes to decision making and the election of new trustees and other roles. reP viously a collegiate system operated with office earers such as ranch b b and deanery leaders representing the members in their groups. The return of the new membership forms and individual subscriptions was, overall, conducted according to the requested procedure although, as in many previous years, there were some late returns. Membership numbers continue to cause concern, not ust in the diocese, ut in Mothersj b ’ nion in reat ritain and U G B All Ireland as a whole. s a diocese we are holding our own at aA bout 2% of the GB & I membership, as it was about 15 years ago when I first ecame a trusteeb . However, this is not necessarily a statistic to e complacent ab bout. Overseas the organisation continues to flourish and more areas are ecoming selfb -funding and developing their own programmes of work. As a small oard of trustees we met times in person as well as regularly y b 6 b Zoom whenever necessary. Illness and relocation have provided logistical difficulties and I am grateful to all trustees who have overcome personal challenges to e at meetings and to continue to contrib bute, remotely at times, to the ongoing smooth running of the organisation. The trustees are all members of Communities of Interest, interacting with staff from Mary Sumner ouse and H other diocesan representatives from across the whole of reat ritain Ireland G B & and, on occasions, from across the world. During the early part of the year I attended a training course called ‘Metamorphosis’, gaining ideas to pass on to ranches and groups, with much of b the material also eing releb vant to churches and parishes. Sessions were held fortnightly with smaller groups meeting in etweenb . This was uite a q commitment, ut we hab ve since used many of the ideas in the Ma‘ king a Difference’ sessions which the trustees have taken, y inb vitation, to several venues across the ioceseD . 4 **A** nnual eport 202 **R 3** The collaboration with the Farming Community etworN k continues to flourish with members contributing to the #WoolandWellness campaign y nitting woolly hatsb k for farmers, sewing in the FCN helpline label. y the end of 202B 3, an estimation of the number of hats handed over since the start of our involvement was close to 200. As in previous years we provided support in the Church Tent at Staffordshire County Show. These occasions are never without drama, usually regarding equipment malfunction and this year was no exception! oweH ver, those on duty coped, as Mothers’ nion always doesU ! My thanks go to those who olunteered to v make the refreshments on the two days of the Show. I now our presence is k much appreciated. A meeting of the iocesan residents and officials of CanterD P bury roP vince was held at igh eigh Conference Centre in ertfordshire oH L H ver days in May3 . There was much discussion and dissemination of information from our CEO eB v ullien J and other staff members from Mary Sumner ouse as well as eH xchange of ideas. amongst the iocesan residentsD P . There have also een seb veral meetings on Zoom within the province as well as with the Midlands Cluster group and with representatives of all the dioceses in ritain and ll Ireland B A All trustees are members of Communities of Interest and attend meetings mostly via oomZ . These include prison work, faith, safeguarding and so on, ut seem to b lack the focus and direction of the old ‘Units’. I have attended, amongst others, the database meetings. The central database has had many issues with one of the problems eing that seb veral paid-up members were not receiving publications utb some, no longer members, still were. ur own diocesan dataO base is as accurate as possible, given that the administrator relies on information eing supplied to b the office promptly early in the year and when there are any amendments to e b ’ made. new dataA base is planned for central Mothers nion as part of a muchU - needed upgrade of the whole website. This is due to start towards the end of 2024. On Mary Sumner ay, D 9[th] ugust, aA bout thirty members of Mothers’ nion oined U j the congregation in the Midday ucharist SerE vice in ichfield Cathedral, to L celebrate the life and work of our founder. Canon ndrew Stead conducted the A service with members of Mothers’ nion taU king part in readings and prayers. fterA the service we en oyed fellowship in the Close y sharing pacj b ked lunches on The ‘ Beach’, an event put on y the Cathedral during the summer, surrounded y b b children playing in the sand and paddling pools. oyous occasion which I hope A j may continue. 5 **A** nnual eport 202 **R 3** In September around 20 members of this diocese attended the nnual athering A G in orY k. fter a day of worship, the launch of the ise pA R U ! campaign, presentations from staff members and a rousing eynote speech from our k Worldwide resident, Sheran arper, the day culminated with P H Evensong in orY k Minster. The only downside of the day was the torrential rain which fell on those walking etween the meeting enue and the Minsterb v . There is to e no nnual b A Gathering until 2026 when we shall e celeb brating 150 years since Mary Sumner first invited the mothers of her husband’s parish to the ectory and sowed the R first seeds of what is now a worldwide organisation. As well as our collaborations with FCN there are many organisations our members work with and support. Members write Christmas cards for prisoners in the 9 prisons in the ioceseD . iscuits, aster eggs and sweets haB E ve also een donatedb . Support for women’s refuges is strong across the diocese and several members in the Stafford area and I attended a igil in Stafford during the v 16 ays of ctiD A vism against ender ased iolenceG B V . efugees, the homeless and care leaR vers are also among groups supported in different ways y separate groups or ranchesb b . The three iocesan meetings haD ve seen etter attendances during 202b 3 as the legacy of covid declines a little and we all ecome more confident ab bout eing outb and about. The minor changes to the timing of meetings have also contributed. My thanks first of all go to my fellow trustees for all their hard work during the year. We are few in number and many of us have faced personal difficulties and I am grateful for the support they have given me during what has een a b challenging year. Helen alfreyP July 2024 6 **A** nnual eport 202 **R 3** ## Structure, **G** o **v** ernance and Management The Mothers’ nion, iocese of ichfield is an association of MothersU D L ’ nion U Worldwide and is formed with a constitution approved y Central Mothersb ’ union. The Trustees named inside the front cover are elected every three years. Appointment of Trustees is governed y the diocesan constitutionb . The Trustees delegate the day to day running of the diocese to the administrator and if necessary, receive assistance from the Trustee oardB . ll of the charityA ’s trustees are considered to e related partiesb . In their capacity as trustees and members of Mothers’ nion they will receiU ve arious ev xpenses. ll Trustees receiA ve information packs from the charity, the packs include details of their formal responsibilities as Trustees. The Trustees actively review the ma or risj ks that the charity faces on a regular basis and elieb ve that maintaining reserves at current levels combined with an annual review over ey financial systems, will prok vide sufficient resources in the event of adverse conditions. The Trustees have also examined other operational and usiness risb ks faced y the charity and confirm that they hab ve established systems to mitigate the significant risks. The operation of the work of the diocese is entirely dependent on the oluntary v efforts provided y the indib vidual officers and members. ## **Obj** ecti **v** es - To encourage parents in their role to develop the faith of their children - To maintain a worldwide fellowship of Christians united in prayer, worship and service - To promote conditions in society favourable to stable family life and the protection of children - To help those whose family life has met with adversity - To promote and support married life 7 **A** nnual eport 202 **R 3** ## **G** eneral Trustees The Trustees met most months in person and y oom, in fact oom has een a b Z Z b very useful tool when a situation presented which needed prompt attention. We discussed arious matters from the nnual eport, Mothers nion suv A R U bscriptions, replacing the eacon, the new memB bership form and the ata ase that drian D B A and elen haH ve spent a lot of time working on. As the trustee who has taken on the lead on risons Communities of Interest, I P attended meetings on 11[th] anuary, the J 18[th] May and on the 4th of Septem1 ber yb Zoom. From listening to the other delegates, it ecame clear that Mothersb ’ nion U is ery activ ve within the prison system ut often encounter difficulties due to the b way different prisons work and y whom they are runb . Some ioceses proD vide bags for prisoners when they leave prison, others provide toiletries, irthing ags,b b Easter eggs and urham iocese continues to worD D k in ow newton womenL ’s prison and have a Mothers’ nion ranch within that prisonU b . At the end of May I did a stint in the Church tent at the Staffordshire Show. It was a ery interesting and challenging day, the ettles werenv k ’t working properly, the electricity ept going off and it was the coldest May ay I can rememk D ber, we were ery tempted to wear the hats Mothersv ’ nion memU bers had nitted for k farmers which elen had rought to displayH b . oweH ver, the company was excellent, and we met some lovely people. At the September meeting of risons Communities of Interest, we discussed the P various activities taking place in our respective iocese and shared eD xperiences of working with chaplains and how est we as Mothersb ’ nion could help themU . Nicole all from erB D by iocese asD ked if I would include Sudbury rison to our list P of risons as it is ery close to our order and near to where I liP v b ve. I have since been in touch with eR v o onour, the lead chaplain at SudJ H bury rison and P although she feels that she doesn’t need our assistance at the moment she is pleased to have contact with us. The speaker at the oom meeting was ez R v Tony ynett the part time chaplain of L HMP Five Wells. The eR v. Tony has many years experience in this role having eenb chaplain in prisons in loucester and urhamG D . e said that prison worH k is not for everyone ut if you hab ve a calling it is difficult to get it out of your system. When asked if people who come to faith in prison were less likely to re-offend, he said that is the hope ut to e realistic a conb b version in prison is ery fragilev . They come out of prison with ery little money often without family acv b kup. It is ery v challenging for people to come out of an institution. Along with other members of the Trustee oard I attended the nnual athering B A G in orY k which was held at the arB bican. It was a wonderful day and our worldwide leader Sheran arper spoH ke about the work of Mothers’ nion all around the U world and also of some of her stand-out isits, one of which was to a home for v very young pregnant girls. The service at orY k minster following the meeting was inspirational ut it was ob vershadowed for many ecause we were ept outside theb k minster during a torrential rain downpour. 8 **A** nnual eport 202 **R 3** I attended the uiet day at Shallowford on Monday the 2Q nd of ctoO ber which was led y the eb R v athy TrimK by. time for reflection and renewalA . eR v. athy is one K of the most sensitive and calming people anyone could wish to meet. The day was dedicated to Transforming enerosity“ G ” and part of the worship included a litany of generosity. elen indly rought the written Christmas cards from oH k b D xey to Shallowford, and I rought them home with me to e ob b b xed up ready to go out to prisons. Thank you to everyone who contributed to the card appeal. I have een ab ble to isit ov D vegate prison and have eep in touch with the k chaplaincy team. iL ke many of the prisons they are short staffed and at times the prison is overcrowded. The chaplaincy staff are ery een for Mothersv k ’ nion to U have a presence in the prison and would like us to e ab ble to offer help with Tea/coffee/biscuits after Mass/Sunday services. Someone to help the prisoner’s read scripture, official prison isitors if possiv ble and en palsP . onations of D chocolates, iscuits, cab ke for hospitality services and anyone to attend Christian study and prayer groups. If anyone feels they can help with any of these requests, please get in touch with me. en pals are urgently needed so please P pray and think carefully if you could help in this way. November and ecemD ber are usy months collecting and checb king the Christmas cards members indly prok vide and write in readiness to despatch to the nine prions in our ioceseD . This year we delivered 2,800 cards on a ery wet day, v some of the ob xes were ery heav vy containing about 00 cards and I was not 5 always able to get the car close to the admission area. I also delivered iscuits b and sweets to oD vegate prison again indly donated y our memk b bers. thanA k you to eD b for delivering cards to Stafford and Werrington risonsP . It has een a prib vilege to serve as a Trustee to ichfield iocese ut I feel it is L D b now time to stand down and allow new people with new ideas to serve under a new residentP . I wish the new team every success and assure them of my continuing support. ## **J** ulia Collinson 9 **A** nnual eport 202 **R 3** _P_ rayer and praise cards for ery young children _v_ Early in 2023, some 130 rayer and raise card pacP P ks were dispatched to members. Sixty packs went to loB xwich, 20 to eR vd assica for swestry and J O another 4 posted. Three of our rayer and raise cards were reprinted in smaller P P quantities. ## Flourishing Families I continue to e our diocesan linb k to the arenting Community of Interest CP ( OI) coordinated y staff at Mary Sumner ouseb H . I received some information at the Parenting COI meeting in pril 202A 3, a meeting held ia oomv Z . It was hoped that MSH will deliver some online familiarisation training to facilitators on the new 6 session course called Flourishing Families. An outline of the sessions was presented to those who attended the athering in G York on 22 September 2023. ut since then, and at the time of writing, no dates B have een made ab vailable to me for such training. This may e due to changing b priorities at Mary Sumner ouse, staff changes andH /or deployment there, or indeed that my contact details have fallen off a list. ## Mary Sumner ay, ugust _D 9 A_ With other Trustees, I attended an encouraging and uplifting mid-week ucharist E service on Mary Sumner ay at ichfield CathedralD L . Members and Trustees took part in the service, Canon ndrew gaA ve a homily about the extraordinary life of Mary Sumner. It was wonderful to catch-up with members following the service! ## _B_ ranches contact I attended the deanery festival service on Wednesday May, as the spea3 ker organised y ob R bbie eynolds of Selattyn MR U. It was a good gathering from across the deanery. eR vd assica led the serJ vice in the absence of the icarv . Members from oG bowen, swestry and innerley were presentO K . I was asked to talk about Transformation owN ! and progress to date. generous tea was A provided afterwards and some £131.00 was raised for the elief Fund from R donations and a table-top sale. Trustees delivered a Ma‘ king a ifferenceD ’ session at Christchurch, Tettenhall Wood, on 15 uneJ . It was well attended and engagement felt extremely positive. A representative of Shropshire Supports efugees _R_ spoke at the St ilesG ’ ranch b meeting on Septem7 ber. s part of their support of refugees, the charity giA ves used mobile phones to their clients. Following the meeting, members of a number of deanery churches donated unwanted mobile phones to Shropshire Supports Refugees. The collected handsets and chargers were given to the speaker at that September meeting. Annually, St iles, ShrewsG bury ranch memb bers ery successfully collect gifts v that are included in Christmas hampers given to young adult care-leavers. Their ages are etween b 18-21 and they each have a personal adviser who gives support. In 2023 there were some 210+ young people who received gifts ia theirv personal adviser, many of which are donated y St iles Mb G U. 10 **A** nnual eport 202 **R 3** MU Christchurch, Tettenhall Wood members were most receptive on 16 November, during a session called _‘H_ ow well do you now your i _k b b_ le uilding _– b b_ ridges _’_ and was well received with plenty of audience participation. These were,  taking up the ISR E-UP challenge in their churches or local community centres, and - getting alongside our local clergy in a new, humble and supportive way, especially offering to pray for and or with them in their parish ministry. ## _U_ se of social media Central Mothers’ nion continues to haU ve a strong presence online, especially Facebook. aily midday prayers noon MTD ( G /BST) are presented li‘ ve’ to members across the world. I oin that when possij ble and more often catch-up later in my day. Throughout the year I, like eD b Tudor, posted regularly to our MU ichfield L Diocese Facebook page. oth eB D b and I are administrators‘ ’ for the page and periodically a few requests to follow‘ ’ the page arrive. The attendance does seem to have grown slightly with followers from other diocese and regions of the world. If you do engage with social media and ichfield iocese MothersL D ’ nion in U particular, do share news stories with your friends and invite them to li‘ ke’ and ‘ ’ follow our page. ther MO U dioceses have adopted this approach and have succeeded in increasing the number of people aware of Mothers’ nion and its U work. ## To conclude It continues to e a prib vilege to serve ichfield iocese MothersL D ’ nion as a U general trustee. oing so, has een interesting, at times challenging, demanding D b of time and energy. There is much to learn along the way. The meeting of members and hearing of the aluav ble practical work undertaken in different parts of our large diocese is humbling and utterly admirable. Bless you as you continue to e our ordb L ’s hands and feet in meeting local need. **K** atherine May 11 **A** nnual eport 202 **R 3** It’s fair to say I generally expect anuary, FeJ bruary to e relatib vely uiet mainly q due to weather conditions; ut this year turned out to e ery differentb b v . Many branches requested me to e a part of their annual general meetings, to speab k and answer uestions as we transitioned into indiq vidual membership. This went much smoother than expected and I of course en oyed eing aj b ble to meet with members. The wave of prayer services have changed greatly since COVID as ranches or b individuals tend to make their own plans during our time; nowing this we do holdk three oom time slots to hold prayers and continuing this we hope more will oin z j along with us. Quiet days are now returning to numbers we previously saw and the early year one was well attended. elen also raH b vely gave myself and die the chance to A lead. ur focus eing how to connect with our communities as well as our fellow O b members. For the first time the diocese asked us to participate in the 24hrs of prayer, which happens twice a year and we also participated in other time slots of deaneries. Our inclusion will continue in 2024. As happy as I am to e asb ked to e a speab ker at ranches and serb vices it’s also nice to e inb vited to ranches eb vents ust as a memj ber. The welcome is always ’ warm and I m grateful for the fellowship and prayer support. Thank you to members who also contribute to my isits y passing on nitting, Christmas cardsv b k ’ etc. In return I will always deliver any post that s designated. Our Facebook page has many followers, not only from the diocese ut b internationally as well. We try to post four or five times a week and read comments left, replying if appropriate. Members requests would e welcomed andb we can e refreshed y new ideas trying to reach new isitorsb b v . Other activities this year have included, Staffordshire County Show, Cathedral prayers, working on role descriptions and general trustee requirements. Our making a difference sessions certainly gave us all some things for us to discuss and plan for the future. We see these sessions continuing annually enabling us all to participate in such future goals. ## **D** e **b** Tudor 12 **A** nnual eport 202 **R 3** ## Financial e **R v** iew ## Finance During 2023 a couple of ranches closed their anb b k accounts and we simplified the centrally held funds. t the end of the financial year we haA ve one mid-risk holding investment, two deposit accounts and a usiness current accountb . The centrally held investment funds, performed well during the year producing dividends of £3,064. The remaining ohn ayes Trust and iocesan ssociation ofJ H D A Family Care holdings were sold generating £11,295 to support the general running costs of the office and our charitable activity. This figure includes a £745 increase in the alue of the holdings when they were soldv . The end of year revaluation of the remaining central fund holding resulted in a gain of £5,745. Mid-risk investment held at ranch leb vel generated dividends of 2,£ 740. During the year £10,000 worth of holdings were sold to fund ranch local pro ectsb j and activities. The end of year revaluation resulted in a sustained loss of £6,760 Centrally, £7,148 was spent on FIA A and grants totalling £3,000 were paid out of the elief FundR . At the end of the year there was an operating excess of expenditure of £3,571, adding the revaluation figures including the ranch inb vestment resulted in a consolidated sustained loss of £14,586. After adding the current and deposit account alances rought forward at the b b beginning of the year, the cash alance in the unrestricted funds at the b 31[st] December 2023 equalled £52,460 including 2,£ 853 held in the discretionary fund. The alue of the centrally held inv vestments at the end of the financial year was £66,812. The alue of the Welsh Franv kton ranch InB vestment was £35,147. The total assets of the Mothers’ nion in the iocese of ichfield at the U D L 31[st ] December 2023 were £155,058. 13 **A** nnual eport 202 **R 3** ## **A** way From It ll **A H** olidays, **D** iscretionary ayments and the elief Fund **P R** To advance the aims and objects of the ichfield iocesan MothersL D ’ nion holidaysU (AFIA) are provided for families in need, discretionary payments and grants are made to individuals and families. Seven caravan holidays were arranged during the year at astings, a each H b holiday at lacB kpool and two aH ven olidays one at restatyn and the other at H P Blackpool. Ten successful applications were made to the elief Fund, proR viding much needed funds for families with unexpected financial emergencies and families experiencing long term difficult financial circumstances. The alue of grants v made during the year aried from lump sums of v £300 to 400 gi£ ven for specific purposes and three smaller payments made at monthly intervals of £100 or £125 ’ to supplement the family s regular income. ## Statement of Trustees **'** Specific Financial esponsi **R b** ilities - The Trustees are required under the Charities ct 20A 11 to prepare financial statements for each financial year which give a clear picture of the Charity s ' financial activities during the year and its financial position at the end of the year. In preparing the financial statements the Trustees should follow est practice andb : a. Select suitable accounting policies and then apply them consistently b. Make udgements and estimates that are reasonaj ble and prudent. c. State whether applicable accounting and statements of recommended practice have een followed, sub bject to any departures disclosed and explained in the financial statements. - d. Prepare the financial statements on the going concern asis unless it is b inappropriate to presume that the charity will continue in operation. The Trustees are responsible for eeping proper accounting records which k disclose with reasonable accuracy at any time the financial position of the charity and which enable them to ensure that the financial statements comply with applicable law and regulations. They are also responsible for safeguarding the assets of the charity and hence taking reasonable steps for the prevention and detection of fraud and other irregularities 14 **A** nnual eport 202 **R 3** ## In **v** estment olicy **P** The constitution authorises the Trustees to invest any monies that are not immediately required y the ichfield b L Diocesan Mothers' Union in or upon such investments as may be thought fit to be appropriate for the investment of charitable funds. It is the policy of the ichfield iocesan Mothers union to inL D vest our surplus central funds in the CBF Church of ngland eposit Fund and the CE D BF Investment Fund income shares. Surplus ranch funds are inb vested in M&G Charifund. ## **R** eser **v** es olicy **P** The policy of the trustees is to maintain the unrestricted reserves of the charity at a level that is equivalent to 18 months normal expenditure, approximately £120,000. The financial statements of the Mothers' Union in the Diocese of Lichfield have been prepared on a Receipts and Payments Basis in line with the recommendations of the FS 102 SORP ## **Stock** Stock is shown at historical cost ## 2 **Fund Acccounting** The charity maintains a level of resources required to fulfil its objectives. The board of trustees monitors reserves at regular meetings ## Unrestricted Fund **s** The unrestricted Fund represents funds arising from the charities activities in previous years. The funds can be used in accordance with the charitable objects at the discretion of the trustees. On occasions the trustees may specify that amounts of these funds are to be designated to be used for a specific purpose. ## Restricted Funds These are funds that can only be used for particular restricted purposes within the objects of the charity.
