Mothers, Union is firmly rooted in a voluntary ethos. Its governance. leadership and activities are
driven by and undertaken through its members.

1. Women's refuges= The charity supports women in five refuges across Ihe diocese.
Members donate food. toiletries and other items. which are collected at the Members.
meetings and taken to the refuges by volunteers. Members also respond to ad-hoc
appeals for items needeo (such as cots or buw'esl and provide Christrnas gift bags for
the women and Ea8t8r eggs for the children. The charity gives a small grant to women
leaving the refuge to purchase household goods.
2. Woklng Nlght Shelter and Gulldford Actlon.. Members support these local charities whlch
offer support lo the homeless and those on low Incomes by donating goods which 8re
ollected at Members. Meetings.
3. Hospltal Emergency Admisslong: A number of branches h8ve dlrect Ilnks with Ioc81
hospit8ls to provlde sm811 bags of b8SiC tolletries. Members donate items for ihese bags
at Members. Meetings.
4. Prison8-. MU member8 volunteer at Send women's prison, leading craft activities and
social sessions, and they also provide craft packs for prisoners to Ug8 on thelr own.

5, Parenting Piogramme.. The charityhas a number of accreditad parenting coordinators who
can leod • range of parentlng courses.
6. Advocacy, Lobbying and Gonsultalion.. Many campalgns on women's Is3ue8 and family
matters have been led by Mothers. Union nationally and Internationally. Some memb8rs
from Guildford Dlocese torm part of a panel feodlng in views and opinions in furtherance
otsuch c8mpoigns.
7. Communlc8tlon8- The charity ha8 8 web81t8 which18 contlnu8lly revlewed and updated to
provide o more accessible 8nd useful portal for members 8nd non-member8. Members
receive 8 ￿￿1¢8-year{Y magazine from the Mother8. Union l-Connected°l and another from
Guildford MU I"The Ang81"l. Regular newsletters are Sant out by emall to promote MU
Èctivities and events.
8. Monthly Pllgrimag8 of Prayar.. Thls service Is traditionally held at the Lady Chapel in
Guildford C8th8dT81, led by members from varlous deaneries across the dlocese in
rotal10n.
9. Intercessory Pr8yer: A coordlnator alert8 a te8m by email when 8 p8rticul8r emergency or
prayer need arl8e8, and in som8 cases 8m811 group8 meet to locus on prayer for
P8rticular iequ8St8.
10. Wave of Prayer- Our "Wava of Prayer" 18 8 contlnuous expresslon ot our commltment In
P18yer to each other. It runs throughout the year so that the work and members of each and
every are8 in which Mothers, Union is active Is prayed for at some point. We inGlude this In
our Midday Prayers whenever we mèet 8ClOSS the dlocese.

The finance committee met a number of times during 2024 to reviewthe fin8nGes in more detail
than time allowed during full tru8te8 meetings.
The diocese continu8S to operate cautlOU8ly and 88ek8 to U6e its funds prudently to Support the
aims and vision of Mothers. Union.
We have three bank 8ccounts vAth Lloyds, 8 general buslness account, an account mainly used
for members, subscriptions and one for Mue Irading. We hold shares 8dministered by th8
Guildford Diocese Board ot Finance and have shaTes with the CBF Church of EnEland
Investment Fund,. we olso have A deposlt account wlth the CBF Church ol England Deposlt
Fund. We enloyed a mode8t gain In the value of our Investments over the y88r.
Members donato generou81y and fundraise in a variety of ways to 8UPPOrt the work of Mothei8'
Union. In 2024 projects which we helped to financts includingAFIA holidays and d8y8 Out.
support work in local prisons and women's refuges. the Make-a Mother's Day 8ppeal. the
Summer of Hop8 appeal and the dioc8san summer party for famiL188 in need.

JolDI Pr¢$idents' Report for 2024
2024 marked the end of a triennium which had seen many changes at Mothers, Union
headquarters. Mary Sumner House, and in Guildford Diocese. After much discussion and
consultation, 8 new Voting system w8s put in place in Guildloid to elect the Diocesan President
and members oftheTrustee board.'On8 rnember, onevote. meantthat everymember had 8
chance to be involvod in th8 process Bnd to hBV8 their voice h8ard. This was quite a
complicated loglstlcal exerclse. but the outcome w88 very satisfactory with over a third of tha
members c8stlng thelr votes.
The work of Mothers. Union acrossthe diocese continues to be supported bythe Bishop of
Guildford and the Blshop of Dorking. We have had regular meetings with Bishop Andrew and
were delighted to take up his offer of the use of his g8rden duringTent Week in June lor a te8
Party for members. Over 100 attended and enjoyed a lime of lellowshlp as well as a chance to
hear pr88entOtiong about MU projects.
We contSnue to hold Members. Meetlngs every May and November, Ond these are now
supplem8nled by Branch Le8ders' meeting8whlchoffer8 further opportunityto keep members
up to d8te wlth forthcoming events and to get t8edbackfrorn members. Tr8dSllonally the
Members. Meetings have been held during the daytime but in May the meeting was held in the
evenbng, glving a chance for members at work during the dayto attend.
A new Inltlatlve In 2024 WBS a Gr8ndparenting Dèy held In October 8t the Church on the He8th In
Elvetham. This was an opportunity lor members to explore how they might share their faith with
their grgndchildren and to attirm and encourage them in this role. The meetingwas well
attended 8nd the init18tNe will be taken lorward in the future.
As we look back on our three years in office. we feelthat the experiment of havingtr￿ joint
Pr88idents has been 8 successful one. We hsve t8kon it in turn8 to chair Board meetings Bnd
have shared the considerable workload of meetings within the diocese and across the province
according to our availability and skills. Collaborative working has been the key and will continue
tof eature stiongly as the chaiity moves Into a new trSennium. even though this will be with lust
one Diocesan President.

A¢tion and Outreach
Refuges:
At present Wa SUPPOrt five refuges within the diocese= two in Woking. one in Guildford, one in
Aldershot and one in Waverley. All families at the refuges were invited to our annual summ8r
paityln Augustwhichwasverysuccessfulwrth about 70chlldren being entertalned bya
bouncy castle. 8 ball pooL 8 magician and crBfts.
The members are very generous. and donations are brought (from a list of needs provided by
the refuges) to ourtwo Members, Meetings. SO Christmas bags for the women at the refug8S
were assembled by our Hinchleywood blanch and contributions were given to iheii
Christmas party.
Prisons:
At Send women's prison. we hold card-making sessions tMi¢e a month as well as a soclal
evening tor the over 50s. We have about 12 volunteers who regularly go into the prison. Some
members provide card-maklng packs that are provided for Ladies who 8re not comfortable
mixing with other prisoners.
Other actlvllles:
Some branches make up and supply emergencytolletry bags for hospitals.
Goods 8r8 collected and donated to the women's night shelter in Woking, the night shelter in
Guildford and the drop-in centre for rough sleepers in Guildford. Our rnernbe￿ also donate to
Guildford Action. 8 local charltywhich provides services for people who have fallen through
the net orfind themselves outside norm3180¢iety-
Many members use craft skills- knittingfor bables and toddlers (with some garments given
to local refugees and others sent to a linked MU charity in Ugandal or creatingliddle pinnies
and twiddle muffs for dementia sufferers in local care homes. Members have also knitted
knee rugs for stroke victims ai local hospitals.

AFIA (Away from It All)
AFIA has been able to support quite a number of families in need this year. Partneringwth
organisations such as the Kinship Care charity and the Salvation Army Housing Association. we
have arranged holidays to caravan parks ne8r the sea in West Sussex and Doiset. AFIA also
paid for a c08ch to take a group of mothers and Children from a local refuge out forthe
day. Despite the rain. they very much enjoyed theirtirne bythe se8 in Brighton and thè packed
lunches we funded. AFIA also promded transport so that visitors including refugees and those
based in refuges could attend the Mothers, Union summer party at Normandy Village Hall.

and tfustee, has been asked to contlnue to sit on the comrnlttee and h8s agreed, foi whlch
members are most gfateful.

heard from a number of past Diocesan Presidents who shared memories of their time in office.
Cantarbury Pro￿ne1￿l Gatherlng: this wa8 held at the King's Cenlre in Oxford on 22 June and
attend8d by nearly 300 members from across the Prownce. Guildford's Antonia Wilson had
done much ol the oig8nlslng, and Plppa and Steve Cramer181s0 Gulldford MU members)
presented a segmenton'Hymns ol Love,. Members 8ppreciated preseniaiionson MU workin
various dioGeses. shared a servi¢e ol Holy Communion. and were entert8ined by comedian
Andy Kind after Ivnch.
Qulet Day.. thls took pi8ce on 16 October at St Thomas on the Bourne, F8rnh8m. Revd Professor
Linda Morgan led a refleclion on the theme of Homecoming for 20 members.
16 D•ys of Activlim against gend6r4••bed violonce= this was marked by Send branch
members with a candle-lit vigil 8t their local shopping p8r8de. Tho Diocese also has B display
'Soles of our shoes- which showcases shoes that speak on behalf of the victims of domestic
violence and Bbuse. The physical shoes are accomp8n18d by comments from those that h8V8
walked away from abuse. and those who journey with them. The display is used by dlff erent
branches 8cr058 the diocese to highlight the issue of domestic abuse.
Monihly Pllgrlmaga of Prayer 80Th1cos continued atthe Lady Chapel in Guildford Cathedral.
Pr8vious attempts to reach out to a wider audlence vi8 Zoom Wtrfe discontinued due to
unresolv3bletechnic81 problems. Revd Canon Rosemary Donovan, an MU member. devised
8nd led a speci81 service of remembrance in November Bs Betty Hayes was not available that
day. Members 8nd relatives were comforted by the seNice 85 they honoured the lives of those
who had died during the past year.

Reportl from Branches
Our branches vary in size - 8 few have just a h8ndful of members while the Largest have over
70. Activitiesvaryfrom branch to branch, but all ale involved in fundraising for MU project5 and
setvice to their Ioc81 community.
Highlights from 2024 included:
Our Summer Party h81d 8t Nomandy VilL8ge H811. We welcorned So wsitors. including some
relugees and other families from refuges and the Blshop of Guildford. Children enjoyed
magic show, bouncy castle, soft p18y, craft 8Ctivities. parachute games and the outdoor
playground. About 25 MU volunteers supervised activltles 8nd served Telreshments. and MU
funds covered the costs of tr8n3port to the venue.
A5hlead branch makes 'Bags of love, for the parents of new pupils at the Ioc81 ColE Inf8nt
School. These paper gift bags are handed out to P8rents as Ihey diop olf their children on the
first day of the new school year. The bags contaln tissues. a pack of wipes. lip salve, tea and
coffee bags and a p8cket of bi8CUlts. plus an Invitation lo a coffe8 morning and prayer card. A
similAr prDjèCt Also runs 8t Lyn8 br8nch.
Cake Stalls arealw8y8 o popularw8yto raise moneyandwere held by many branches
over the course of the year.
Members 8t C8mberley St. Paul's br8nch 8re 811 encour8ged to bringtoilet rolls to each
branch meetingl These are glven to a local Christian charity. the Hope Hub, which works
to support homeless people. On average 48 rolls per month are donated. and the
brBnch also contributes E8Ster eggs and specialfood treats at Christmas.

Safeguarding
I have now completed my third year As Saf8gu8rding lead for Guildford Moth8rs' Union.
Mary Sumner House. the headquarteis ofthe Mothers. Union. has nowappointed a Lead for
Safeguarding and approved the guidance for the UK and Nl. The trustees of Guil(Jford Diocese
are workingto follow this guidance.
We have commenced the proc8ss of obtaining DBS clearance forthe trustees. using the
thiityone-.eight Drg8nis8tion. I have also accessed updated trainingfor my role through this
organisation. The Diocese of Guildford continues to offer Guildford MU members access to
their safeguardingtraining programme.
I have stBrted visits to Guildfoyd MU branches to gi￿ B tBlk and some training on
safeguarding and welfare. These visits usually raise questions about various sitU8tions and
help to raise members. awafeness of safeguarding issues.

Basis of Accountlng
a) The financial statements have been prepared under the historical cost convention with
items recognised at cost or transaction value unless otherwise slated in the relevant
nole(sl to these accounts. The financial statements have been prepared in accordance
with the Statement of Recommended Prdctice.. Accounting and Reporting by Chanties
preparing their accounts in accordance wth Ihe Financial Reporting Siandard applicable
in the UK and Republic of Ireland IFRS 102) issued in October 2019 and the Financial
Reporting Standard applicable in the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland IFRS 1021
and the Charities Act 2011. The financial slalemenls have been prepared in accordance
wth the provisions of FRS 102 Section 1A small enlilies.
b) The Trustees consider that there are no material uncertainties about the charity's ability
to continue as a going concem. There are no material uncertainties affecling the cu￿ent
year's accounts.
cl The stock is valued at the lower ol cost and net realisable value
d) The unrealised gainslllosses) on Investrnents are based on the market value at the end
of the financial year. The market value is deemed to be the mid-markel value, which is
the average of the bid and the offer price. Unrealised gainsl{losses) are included in the
Statement of Financial Activities.
el Member subscriplions are consldered lo be donatlons in substance and are recognlsed
in the year to which they relate. Subsuiptions lolalling £11,914 received in 2024 bLrt
relating lo 2025 have been deferred and shown in credltors.
Legacies and donations are accounted for as income elther upon receipt or where the
receipt of the legacy is virtually certain- this will be once confimation has been recelved
from the representatives of the estate Ihat payment of the legacy will b8 made or
property transferred and once all conditions attached to the legacy have been fulfilled
g) Interest on funds held on deposSt is Included when receivable and the amount can be
measured reliably by the charity; this is nomially upon notification of the interest paid by
the bank.
h) Expenditure is ￿COgniSed when a liability is incurred. VAT is charged against the
category of resources expended for bthlch it was incurred.
2 Income and Expendllure
The charity benefits greatly from the involvement and 5UPPOrt of its Vo￿nteerS. In
accordance with FRS 102 and the Charilies SORP IFRS 1021, the economic contribution
of general volunteers is not recognised in the accounts.

I report to the Trustees on my examination of the accounts of the charity for the year ended 31
December 2024.
Responsibilities and basis of report
As the charity trustees you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the
requirements of the Charitles Act 20111.the Arfl.
I report in respect of the charsws accounts carried out under seLtion 145 of the 2011 Art and in
carrying out my examination, I have followed all the applicable Directions Biven by the Charity
Commission under sertion 1451511bl of the Act.

I have Completed my examination. I confinm that no material matters have come to my attention in
connectlon with the examination which gives me cause to believe that. in any material respect..
The accounting records were not kept in accordance with section 130 of the Act: or

The accounts did not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the form and
content of the accounts sel out in the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations other
than any requirement that the accounts give a "true and fairf view. which is not a matter
