Membership and Funding:
The Mothers, Union Diocesg of Salisbury's mambership in 2023 was 713, a decrease of 48, bul which
incl￿deS 135 Diocesan members whose membership is administered by Mothers. Union, DI0￿$an Office.
Branches number 578, The annual subscription is shared be￿een Mary Sumner House1£14,9731 and
the Mothers. Union Salisbury Diocesan General Fur￿. The Subscription per member remained al the
2022 level of £32 although Mary Sumner H(xJse increased their share for 2023 from £20 to £21 per
member. Total r￿1p1S in 2023 werel£41,384} wilh payments of1£47,7621.
Donations lo th@ follc)wing Mothers, Union Funds were made by members and a150 grants.. Holidays (Away
From 11 All) £21,990. Overseas Fund donations were £4,101 for 2023. The donations from memberg
were raised by means of various events. collgclions al Church s8rvic8s, overse88 boxes and donations
from individu8ls, legacies, branches dganeries.
Monies received in memory of Vice President Andrea Fox are allocated within Hollday Fund and are
ring fenced for ilems for the holiday home al Rockley Park.

for the charity are LloydsTSB, Salisbury and the Nationwide Building Sooety.

The Trustees continue to retain the Central Board of Finance Investrnenl 1£32,2351 a￿1 part of the
Nationwide deposit 1£9,549} In reserv& to ensure that adequate funds are always available to cover
unexpected expenditure, parli¢ularly with regard to our responsibility as employers.

Prayer is Ihe foundation of all Ihal we do in Mothers, Union. We are delighted to have our own Mothers,
Union Chaplain. The Reverend Jayne Tyrer Ilicensed by the Bishop as chaplain ir) July 2023) leads u5 in
Prayer and Worship al our Trustees, and SpTing and Autumn Gatherings of members. Our Worship and
Di8(4Piesnip h¢ive been ènhar￿ed by h8T PI(4s8nce and wè ti)ank her for all Ihat sfie does.
The 713 members in the Diocese e8ch have & copy of Ihe annual Prayer Diary, produced by Mary Sumner House.
which encourages and 8nab19s daily prayer for the w0￿d and for MU projects and workers as well as providing
information to help our prayer limes and urKierslartding. Members ar& encouraged lo pray at midday each day. In
addilion, all members receive a copy of the Molh8rs' u￿On bi-annual publication 'Connecled'.
Members gather each month for wmmunion in the Cathedral. Parish Priests from different parts of the Diocese are
invited to lead the services.
A Trustee p￿pare$ a monthly Rellections and Inter￿s1OnS leaflet which is circulaled throughout the
Diocese. The leaflet encourages members lo pray for named individuals as well as for specific mallers.

with the Sudanese Dioceses and, although Salisbury Mothers, Union no longer ha5 official links with Sudan and

On Mary Sumner Day OF) 9 August, Mothers, Union WortdwiEle Presidgnl, Sher8n Harper, visited the Cathedral and
the grave of Mary Sumner at Winchester together with Old AlresfDrd Church lo celebra18 the life of our Molh&rs'
Union foundèr. Trustees and members galherad lo hear Sheran's inspiring address elaborallng on the MU
programme and projects throughout the world which transform the lives of wi)men and girls, families and
communities and sland as a powerful force for positive change.

Our 6-bed holiday home al Rockley Park. Poole (purchased new in 20171 is let out at very low rates to families who
need a break. The project Is d8signod to give assisted families experiencing the pressures of day-lo.day life a safe
place away from il all. MU branchos k¢ndly donate Welcorne Packs. A lolal of 12 fam￿lI@S gnjoyed a holiday 2023.
Our MU AFIA (Away from il All) fund is in a he211hy sla18, generously supported by mèmbers, the Tindall Trust and
St Mar￿8 Fund. W8 are exploring purchase of a replacement home. Andrea Fox's legacy of £1,540 continues lo
¢nable us lo provid& special items for those using this [2￿711Y.
Our Mothers, Union Virtual Baby Life Skills woject in th9 Diocese is aimed at young people aged 15+ often from
deprived areas of Vlhllshire and Dorsel, lo prepare them for some of the important demands of family lif8 as they
journey towards adulthood. We work with locAI secondary schools and teams of local DBS checked volunteers with
a focus on parenting and pregnancy bul also on rn8ny wider soaal issues. such as healthy relationships, personal
cho(￿, slrgss management and building self-awareness, confidenc9 and aspiration. The prr4ecl took us into 7
schools In 2023, with a new school in The Lavinglons welcomed by 45 pupils who look part.

Molhers, Union is a significant supporter of tha Salisbury Women's Refuge providing Iru51ees on ils Board. A
nUm￿￿r of Ihe residen15 have been gues15 on our earlier rgsidonlial holidays. Mothers, Union members are very
generous in their donations lo the Salisbury Women's Refuge with which we have a special relationship. having been
one of the original founders. As well as financial donations members donal8 collections of items. including clothes.
household it8ms and vouchers.
Our promotion of the 16 Days of Activism Campaign Against Gender Based Violence continues arKI support for the
campaign is a5ways increasing. In 2023, our Eucharist lin ils 11 year} was held in the Trinity Chapel of Salisbury
Calh&dral attended by approximately 90 MU members and public figures. We were honoured lo have as our guesls..
the Mayor of Salisbuiy Aliqul Hoque and Mrs Caroline Probert Chair of Salisbury Women's Refuge. Guest speaker
was Mrs Shelley Rid811 a Counsellor with the Refugè who gave an insight into the work of the counselling leam an¢J
tle Resdge. 2022 seen the MU Di¢￿Ase ¢! S•lisbury paTIpier for the fir.st lime with Soroplimi8t Inlernaliciial cf
Salisbury lo run a stall in Salisbury Mafkel Place with the aim of engaging members of the public on issues of
dom8slic abuse and gender-based violen￿. In 2023. we have agaln joined with the Soroplimisls in Salisbury in a
collaborative effort with MU members covering shoe boxes in purple and orange (Dur and the Soroplimisls, coloursl
for our Souls of our Shoes display against domestic abuse and in support of th8 Mothers, Union Rise Up campaign
in the C8thedral's Trlnily chapel, Salisbury shops and al Thomas's Church.
RISE UP Against Domestic Abus8 Is Mothers, Union's new campaign, launched in Septemb&r 2023, to raise
awareness about domestic abuse. The aim is lo make sure that activism against domestic abuse and gender-based
violenca happens 366 days a year and notjust during the 16 Days of activism campaign in November and December.
The lellers of RISE UP sland for Respond, Inform, Support, Empower, Unite and Pray. There are bronze, silver and
gold awards for brar￿leS anLI churches who take part and compl@t9 various activities. Several branches within the
DiDceso lave already actriic¥x>d the 8ron7e Award.
Molher$' Union is 8 partner with Prison F@Ilowshlp In providing Chrislmas gifts as part of the Angel Tree project for
children of prtsoners al HMP Erlesloke. We act on prisoners, applications lo send gifts lo their children. Mothers,
Union funds, sources, wraps and posts the gifis. Christmas 2023 saw 28 individual prgs8nts wrapped lor the children
of 20 fathers serving in Erlesltske prison. Angel Tree is a simple and rewarding way for Molh8rs' Union lo help
prisoners slay in contact wiln Iheir'families durin9 imprisonment anci which looks io contribute lo reducing re-
offending rates.
Promotion:
As mentioned above, increasing numbers of members are purchasing MU products via the internat. The fTr)Ifall in
th& o*ice is thE>reforg roduceo as WE)11 as our awarene5S OT mefiib8rs' buying pallerns, I ru5t¢ès continue to monitor
the viability of continuing with the offic8 shop and the ￿nSequent costs. Most communication takes place by e-mall.
However, when larger documents such as magazines, booklets, surveys and nolificalions from Mary Sumn8r House
require distribution to members, every effort is made lo do this in pre-packed envelopes for collection al Autumn and
Spring Galh8rings, thereby saving on postage. Our Diocesan Secretary relies upon the assistance of a 18am of office
v.olunlpers in this preparation,
Safeguardlng:
As an organisalion concerned with Christian principles and ministry in famity life. the nurture and protecti￿ of
chilthen, young peopl8 and adults is al the heart of Mothers, Union. Both inclividually as members and collectively
as an organisalion, Molhor%' lJnion h8s a duly to protect chilclren, yoiJng people 8nd adults, doino everylhino possible
lo ensure that they are safe when involved in Mothers, Union activities.
In 2023, a comprehensive Policy and PrO￿dureS was designed and published lo provide a framework for
safeguarding practice within Mothers, Union in Britain. We are committed lo promoting a safer environment and
ullure for all involved in our projec15, programmes, initiatives and activities. The Policy applies lo everyone working

safeguarding remains an agenda item at our trustee meetings. DBS checks for those working with children, young

people and adults al risk are requirÈd every 3 years.
General Data Protection Règulatlon IGDPRI:
In acc(xdance with legislation and following th& guidelinès from Mary Sumner House, Mothers. Union in the DioTrs8
of Salisbury seeks to adhere to Data Protection legislation.
Inltiatives:
In partnership with Spurgeons Children Charlly, a Christian charity that aims lo improve the lives of children and
families struggling to cope, MU members in Branches and Prayer and Fellowship Groups pul together, for young
mothers le8ving hospital with very little, supplies ne￿SsarY for them and their newborns. such a5 nappies, baby
clothes. baby blankets and towels, pram toys elc. which ara deliverad to Ruth Brook&5-Marlin who manages
Spurgeons, collections.
As a separ8te initialivg, members knit baby blankets lo a specific size 8nd pallern. This inilialivo was in response lo
a call pul out by Salisbury District Hospital where, on average, 100 babies aro born every month. The Maternity Unil
was unable lo provide blankets for the babies and so Mothers, Union came lo the rescue. We continued to respond

blankets have already been delivgred lo the hospital and several htsncjrecl await delivery once lab818d.

Charities Act 1993 (the Act). as amended by s.28 of the Chariti¢s Act 2006) and that an independ¢nt

My examination was carried out in accoi-danLc with the General Dii'eclions given by the Chaiity

items or disclosures in the accounts and seeking cxplanations from the tsustees conceiming any such
malters. The procedures undertaken do nol provide all the evidence that would be Yequired in an audit. and
