Trustees’ Report

The Report of the Chairman on the working and progress of the Society since the last AGM

This report covers the 14 months since the annual general meeting held in March 2022.

The events staged

Although the number of early evening events was fewer than the previous year a series of daytime events more than compensated.

The first of the early evening events in the period under review was a lively and scholarly conversation on 11 May 2022 between Emeritus Professor Salima Hashmi and Dr Samina Iqbal. In which they surveyed Pakistani art from 1947 to the present. These two greatly respected experts discussed the roots of contemporary art in Pakistan and its pre-1947 precursors and, in so doing, provided their audience with an illuminating excursus into this exciting and stimulating field of human creativity.

Next in line was a daytime visit on 29 June to the excellent Grosvenor Gallery in Central London. There members were given a private showing of some south-Asian modern art. The gallery is just large enough to provoke interest in what is on display and stimulate a curiosity to find out more. The visitor never leaves disappointed. This event was closely followed a month later by an afternoon visit on 28 July to the British Library for a tour of the Library and a private showing of some of the fascinating items in its South Asian and India Office collections including some of the key documents, some of them highly classified at the time, leading to independence in August 1947.

Saturday 20 August witnessed a live afternoon screening in SOAS’s Khalil lecture theatre of the celebrated 1998 film Jinnah. The occasion was greatly enlivened by the presence in person of the film’s celebrated director, Jamil Dehlavi. The film, although produced 25 years earlier, held the audience spell-bound, both those who had not seen it before and those who had. This was followed by a short review of Jamil’s career as an independent filmmaker, complete with extracts from some of his other notable films, and a lively conversation between him and the Society’s Secretary, Mahmood Masood, with numerous questions from a much-engaged audience.

An in-person event at the High Commission on 20 September saw Moneeza Hashmi in conversation with Victoria Schofield. Their conversation centred on Moneeza’s recently published book Conversations with my father – forty years on a daughter responds in which she shares the letters her celebrated father, Faiz Ahmed Faiz, wrote to her over the years, initially from jail and then whilst absent from Pakistan, setting out what she would and should

have shared with him by way of reply. As clearly emerged from their conversation this was a labour of love by a daughter to her late father.

With the return to normality it occurred to the committee that it would be nice to host an informal early evening reception where we could meet and get to know those who had joined the Society since January 2020. We felt that lockdown had deprived them of the regular round of events that membership should have brought them. The result was that we had the use of one of the impressive rooms in the Cavalry and Guards Club in Piccadilly on 4 October for this enjoyable and thoroughly worthwhile get-together.

Two weeks later saw another afternoon events at the British Library. This was on 18 October when we took part in a private symposium on that uniquely Urdu poetic form, the ghazal. Entitled The Urdu Ghazal: Before and After 1857 , the event consisted of a display of printed ghazals, both from before 1857 and after that date, including some very recently published examples, and a learned discussion on the poetic form. What was striking, and impressive to the Library staff who presented the event, was the depth of knowledge about and love for the ghazal exhibited by the members of the Society and their guests who attended.

The third in this succession of daytime events was an escorted tour and private viewing of South Asian artifacts at the V&A on 10 November. Like the British Library, the V & A is a world-class repository of all manner of fascinating items associated with Muslim India. The private viewing included some quite extraordinary items We hope to be able to stage further occasional events at these two world-class places of collection and learning, and add to them a visit to the British Museum as well.

In the absence of a pre-Christmas event to mark the end of the year, as we would have wished, the Society more than succeeded in making up for this by a Chai Party on the wet, chilly and dark Saturday afternoon of 28 January in the warm and welcoming surroundings of the High Commission. This very popular and well-attended event enabled members and their guests to meet and mingle in relaxed mode over tea, samosas and other delectable refreshments. The opportunity was taken to hear from representatives of The Legacy Project, launched in 2022 and spearheaded by the British Pakistan Foundation under the leadership of the High Commissioner to celebrate the 75-year journey of the British Pakistani community since 1947. It is being marked by the planting of 7,500 trees in various parts of the UK as a legacy for future generations, both indigenous and British Pakistani. Needless to say, a good time was had by all at this very happy mid-winter event.

Trustees’ Report

In very marked contrast to the Chai Party was the conversation between Dr Talat Azad and Uzma Shah (and moderated by BBC journalist and broadcaster, Emb Hashmi) about the inspirational journey of six remarkable Pakistani women, of whom Uzma was one, in which each comes to grips with the need to confront, adapt to and eventually overcome physical challenges (paraplegia in Uzma’s case) to lead rich and fulfilling lives. Their stories of how they achieved this in a society ill-equipped both physically and socially to cope with such issues is related in Dr Azad’s moving book (a real pageturner) entitled I was Written Off…. The event, which took place in the week of International Women’s Day, was staged in the very welcoming surroundings of the Regent’s University, in Regent’s Park, a first for the Society. Not the least of the reasons for choosing this venue was the need to stage it at a place adapted to the requirements of the wheelchair-bound Uzma. Searching out such a venue was itself an induction into the challenges faced by Uzma and those like her who are wheel-chair bound.

By the time the annual general meeting has taken place there will have been another in-person event, this time back once more at the Pakistan High Commission, entitled Gems of a Mughal Capital - a talk by Kamran Anwar sharing his immense knowledge of the Mughal history, culture and arts to be found in Lahore.

Membership

Our membership continues to show a gradual increase. 2022 saw a net rise of 28 in our overall number. Especially heartening has been the increase in younger members. The best means of recruiting new members is by staging regular quality events, covering a wide range of topics of interest to differing age groups, where members can introduce their friends, and by our excellent website and an active social media presence. Most of our events are recorded and available for viewing by members who could not be present in person. We shall also be trialling the live-streaming of in-person events so as to reach our membership abroad or live far from London or who cannot for whatever reason attend in person.

Finally

We thank you, the members, for your unstinting support.
