INDEPENDENT EXAMINER'S REPORT ON THE ACCOUNTS OF THE HYMN SOCIETY OF GREAT BRITAIN AND IRELAND I report on the accounts for the year ended 31 December 2022 set out on pages tsvo and three. Respectlve re8ponsibilities of trustees and examiner The charity's trustee5 are responsible for the preparation of the accounts. The chanty's trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year (under Section 144{21 of the Charibes Act 2011 (the 2011 Actll and that an independent examination is required. THE HYMN socIErY OF GREAT BRrrAIN AND IRELAND ANNUAL REPORT FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 DECEMBER 2022 The Hymn ScKiety of Great Brrtain & Ireland was founded in 1936 for the purpose of encouraging study and search in the field of hymnody, promoting good standards of hymn-singing, encouraging the discerning use of hymns in worship, and sponsoring relevant publications. Since the last Annual Report12021-20221 there have teen 9 new members We have, s&Jly, received news of 8 deaths. Membership now stands at 415. comprising 298 members in Gt Britain & N. Ireland, 74 in the USA and Canada, 32 in Europelscandinavia, 2 in Australia, 1 In Japan, 2 in South Aftica, 3 In Nigeria. 1 in Cyprus. in Mexico. and 1 in South Korea. There are 45 subs¢nbing libraries, national deposrt libraries, and other insb'lutions and bodies which receive our publications. The aftermath of the pandemic continues to cast its shadow as it does over many other societies and Chanlies. Membership continues lo suffer an albeit small loss of numbers.. ways need to be found of remedying th. Once again, there have been few extraneous acbvibes during the year bul that does not diminish our ze81 foi hymns and curiosity about hymnody. The Officers have mel on occasions in Birmingham, in September 2022 and February 2023. The Exe¢ulive Committee mel, also In Bimiingham, in October 2022 and May 2023 and in Lincoln immediatety prior to Conference. Executs've Committee elections resume with the 2023 AGM. Resignations during the year for various reasons are regretted. especially that of our RSCM nominee, Canon Chris Moorsom, due to RSCM financial constraints Chris provided an invaluable link which we hope may resume in the not-too-distanl future. During the year the Officers and Executive agreed on the need to make provision within the Constitution for holding hybrid meetings, should a future occasion arise to make il desirabl8. We are grateful lo our Pastor81 Link Person, Claire Wlson who has relinquished h8r role after many years, bul pleased that our long-standing member Kay Grrffiths is now undertaking this task. We iemain grateful lo Bulletin Editor, Andrew Pratt and his team who contsnue to produce our quarterly Bulletin. That il has not always be6n mailed with rts usual gularIty is largely the responsibility of the Secretary and issues outside our Control. Our printing and mailin9 facilities have changed during the year bul continue efficiently. With printing and postal Charges ever Increasing, we remain VlIant in exploring way5 of mibgaling these where possible. The small number who opt to receive online mailings onty has remained static with th8 majority still preferring to receive the mailings by post. There are now hventy-nine Online Short Guides but there have still been no fvrther Occasional Papers. Our psence on Twitter and Fa¢ebwk continues and the SOcty Is thankful to John Crolhers and Ken Cope who facilitate this and lo Ken for all his work on the website We a gralelul to Terence Atkins, and Michael and Viv Garland for their work on Indexlng". Volume XXII of the Bulletin having been mailed to members during the year. The resumption of Regional Events ts to be encouraged. Last November, a Vintage Hymns and Carols event look place In Hampslead In January, the 250th Anniversary of Amazing grnce, was marked in several places. Planning is underway for a Regional Event at Union Chapel, North London in April 2024.
