The Trustees. Report which follow$ presents the work of th8 Contèmporary Art Society for Wales ICASW) for the
yearended 31 December 2024.
Thls has been a year of change. My predecessor, Sandra Hardlng, r8tired as Chair after s8ven dedlcated years In
the role, during which sh8 not only saw CASW contlnue to grow, but a180 come through th8 pandamic virtually
unscathed, an achl8V8m8nt for which the Soclety Is extremely grateful. My thanks to Sandra for her tirele88 efforts on
behalf of CASW.
Sian William8 retir8d from hèr role as Secretary. durfng which time she made great progreBS on the govemance and
Folicies of CASW, $0 necessary for the smooth running of the Executlve Commlttee. Christopher Childs was duly
elected as Slan's successor, while Isobel Davies was elected to 8eNe as Vlce Chair. Continuity has been provided
ty Gerry Foy. who was elected for a second term as Treasurer.
It h85 been a very active and successful year for CASW as evidenced by the 8ection of the Trustee3' Report headed
Activltles and Achi8V8ments. I do not intended to r8P8at the comments in the Report, but instead to tsus on the
efforts of all those members who give their time so generously to ensur8 that each event takes p18ce, A huge thank
you to my f811ow Officer6 and Executlve Committee members, and also to all those members working b8hlnd th8
Scenes, but whose names do not appaar in this Annual ReporL CASW depends on all its many volunteers who do a
fantsstlc job in all manner of role8.
The future for CASW looks very bright. We Intend to bulld on the Strategic work that W88 first 8tart8d in 2023, and we
are also planning for the goth 8nnlversary of CASW whlch tskes place In 2027. We would very much welcome th8
ideas of 811 CASW members a8 we p18n the way ahead.
So, thank you for your sUPPOrt, and let's all work together to take CASW forward.

STRUCTURE. GOVERNANCE AND MANAGEMENT
Govemlng document
The charity is controlled by its constitution and rules, The revised objects - 'to foster and promote
engagement with, and appreciation of, the visual arts among the people of Wales, _ were approved by
the Charity Commlsslon In July 2022 and the amended constitution was adopted by members of the
Soclety at an Extraordinary General Meeting in December 2022.
InduGtlon of new trustees
New trustees are invited to join the Executive Commlttee by recommendation from existing members and
by nominations from the members of the Society in general. The Executive Committee takes the
responsible posltlon of focussing on the skill set required to fulfil the tasks of the Society and how those
are matched by prospective trustees offering their servÉces.
Code of Conduct and practlc•
In addition to the exlsting Code of Conduct and Practlce (Incorporatlng Confllcts of Interest, Investment
Policy and Financial Controls, and Rlsk Management) in 2024 the Executive Committee adopted
Procedure for Reporting Serious Incidents. a Procedure for Handling Complaints,. a Policy for Deallng
with Bullying and Harassment,. a Policy on AcceptSng Proposed Gifts of Artrworks by Will,, and a paper on
Paying Trustees for Senilces. The Executive Committee has an indemnity insurance and general cover
whlch takes Into consideration the range of activities undertaken and age of the membership.
ACTIVITIES AND ACHIEVEMENTS
Support for the vl8ual art8, Includlng educatlonal and soclal actlvltles
In 2024 the Society continued Its programme of Tuesday evening talks. free and open to the public, wlth
online events for the first half of the year and in-person events in the autumn. The online talks were given
by Nigel Prince, Director of Artes Mundi and by artlsts Christine Roychowdhury and Tim Dodds. The in-
person talks, held for the flrst tlme at the Cardiff School of Art and Design, were given by artists Alice
Briggs, Gordon Dalton and Angharad Pearce Jone8.
The Saturday morning tslks for members at Lisvane Memorial Hall were well attended. The first tslk,
Curating in Relation to Museum Collections, was given by artist and curator, Zoe Gingell. This was
followed by ceramicist Paul Vining's talk, Ceramics at Cardiff- the transformative years, and then artist
arKJ biographer Sue Roe brought the first half of the year to a condusion with her talk entitled Writing
Artists, Lives. In the autumn, writer Gary Raymond presented Understanding art 8nd wrlting about It, and
then artist and writer Iwan Bala spoke on Culture as Site-specrfic artform. Finally, artist and curator Ceri
Thomas. stepping in because of a last-minute cancellation. gave a talk on the work of Ernest Zobole.
The princlpal study tour of 2024 was to Newcastle and the Northeast and Included an en-route visit to
The Hepworth, Wakefield., a guided walk taking in the Moor Hall, the Grainger Market and St Nicolas
Cathedra5. visits lo various galleries including NevKastle University's Hatton Gallery, the Laing Art Gallery
and the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art,. and visits to Durham Cathedral and Bishop Auckland Palace.

In 2024 the Society organised a visit to the home of member Angela George to see Angela's extensive
private art collection. The Society was given a conducted tour of the art collectlon at the Royal Welsh
College of Music & Drama, and there was also a visit to Compton Verney to see the temporary exhibition
of works by Louise Bourgeols as well as the permanent collections. The Society was given a guided tour
of The Vall8ys exhibition at the National Museum, Cardiff and many members attended the pre-opening
viewing of Cardiff School of Art & Design's Graduate Degree Show. Finally, a small group of members
walked part of the Beacons Way to vlew ath¥orks Incorporated in the landscape, followed by a visit to
Tower Gallery and then a vlsit to see the works in the home of member William Gibbs.
This year a very well attended Annual Dinner was held at the Cardiff & County Club. The after4inner
speaker was Ceri Jones. Creative Dlrector of the National Contemporary Art Gallery of Wales and Head
of Art at Amgueddfa Cymru.
The Society continued to engage In wlder debate on the arts in Wales. This Included resporKling to the
Consultatlon on the draft Priorities for culture in Wales 2024 to 2030.
During 2023 the Society establlshed a worklng group that produced a strategy document outlining vrdys
of increasing membershlp and of Increasing the profile of the Society within the contemporary art scene
In Wales. This year the Society has worked on the first Stsges of Implemenllng that strategy and.
alongside this, the initial redesign of the Society's website has been completed and launched.
Annual awards
The 2024 the CASW Student Award was given to Sarah Grounds, 8 Post-graduate Student at UV¥TSD
Swansea College of Art, as part of a rolling programme across post-graduate courses In Wales.
The 2024 CASW NatSonal Elsteddfod Purchase Prize was awarded to Jo Berry for a paintlng selected by,
and glfted to, Orlel y Bont at Universily of South Wales.
The Inaugural CASW Hlbbard Award was given to Nantgarw China Works Museum and used to acquire
works by Tony de Jesus, Naomi Palmer and Sophie Jo Edwards.
Gfft of artworks to the Soclety
During the year, works previously gifled to the Society found new homes. Several works were retumed to
the Society from Paintings in Hospitals and, of these, works by John Selway and Sally Matthews were
gifted to the Glynn Vivian Gallery and discussions are still ongoing with other inslitutions regarding works
by Grianne Connolly and Paul Roche. In addition, four works by Wilfred Sirrell were gifted to Josef
Heman Arts Foundation Cymru.
Public beneflt
The Trustees have reviewed the Charlty Commission's guidelines on public benefit and agreed that the
Society has fulfilled its objectives as Set out in the constitution.

Elyslum Art Llm5t8d
The Society has become a member of Elyslum Art Limited, a community interest company incorporated
urKler the Co-operatlve and Community Benefit Societies Act 2014 and which has been formed to
provlde community engagement and encouraging participation in the arts within Swansea and the wider
cornmunity of South Wales, including the provision of affordable workspaces for artists. The sum paid
was £100. being the mlnlmum contribution for membership.
AGM
The AGM was held on Saturday 27th July 2024 at the Carriage House Hall, Snsole Court, Llandaff,
CardiFf. At the meeting Sandra Harding retired as Chair and Sian Williams retired as Secretary. Rowland
Davles (then Vice Chair) was elected as Chair, Isobel Davies was elected as Vice Chair, and Christopher
Childs was elected as Secretary. Dr Gerry Foy was re*lected as Treasurer.
Elalne C8buts, Peter Gill and Andrew Renton were elected a8 members of the Executive Commlttee.
At the AGM in 2023, the Executive h8d been asked to review the Society's banking arrangements to
explore the ethical status of current arrangements. A report of the review was cirGulated to members wlth
Ihe AGM papers and the meeting noted the conclusion set out In the report,
FINANCIAL REVIEW
Reserves pollcy
The charity regularly reviews its investmenls and resep4e levels to ensure that it has sufficient funds to
operate in the forthcoming year, This is estimated to be £25,000. This amount Is held separately in
Natlonal Savlngs & Investment Bonds.
Investment pollcy and obJectlve8
The Society regularly reviews where its cash balances are held to ensure It Is maxlmlslng its investment
returns.
FUTURE PLANNING
To continue and develop the CASW Student Award. the CASW National Eisteddfod Purch8se
Prize and the CASW Hibbard Award.
To further develop and implement the strategles proposed by the Membership Working Group.
To further develop the Society's website with the introduction of additional features.
To commence planning for the celebration of the Society's 90th Anniversary in 2027.

My examination was carried out in accordance with the General Directions given by the Charlty
Commissioners. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charty and
¢ompari8on of the accounts presented with those records. It also Includes ¢on8ideration of any unusual
Items or disclosures in the accounts, and 8eekSng explanations from you as tru8tee8 conceming any Such
matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit,
and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a true and fairf view and the
report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below.

In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention:
1) which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in any material respect the requirement:
to keep accounting records in accordance with section 130 of the Charites Act. and
to preparé accounts which accord with the accounting records and comply with the accounting
