Trustees’ Annual Report For the year ended 31 December 2024

Objectives and activities

The objective of the Society is the continued promotion of the areas within our remit to encourage an appreciation of the beauty, heritage interest, and community value of the natural and built environment within the County of Northumberland, City and County of Newcastle and the Metropolitan Borough of North Tyneside. During the year, the Society has delivered a full programme of activities for its members in fulfilment of its stated objectives.

Achievements and Performance

The Society has continued to monitor planning applications, attend planning inspectorates, and engage in consultation with other agencies regarding restoration work to heritage assets and new developments especially those within conservation areas seeking to promote good sustainable and empathetic design.

To celebrate our centenary year, the Society held a well-attended celebratory garden party at Kirkharle in the heart of Northumberland and successfully published a book,” Our City our County, An Anthology, A Celebration of the first 100 years of the Northumberland and Newcastle Society”. This would not have been possible without the generous financial support from our membership.

Financial review

The trustees' policy is to maintain the Society's funds at a sufficient level to meet ongoing commitments with an adequate balance in reserve to meet contingencies. We also investigate and source additional funding opportunities as required for specific projects.
