Charter: Established and built in 1872, the Poulett Almshouses are for needy persons of good character who are resident in any of the parishes of Hinton St. George, Dinnington, Seavington St. Mary, Lopen or Merriott at the time of appointment. Preference shall always be given to such persons who are so resident in the parish of Hinton St. George..

The Charity is administered by five Honorary Trustees:

• 3 are co-opted

• 2 are nominated by Hinton St George Parish Council

The Trustees are assisted by an Almshouse Liaison Officer (formerly Warden) and Clerk who receive an honorarium to defray their expenses.

The Charity has 9 residents who pay a monthly contribution towards maintenance costs. The Trustees keep the maintenance charge under review and take a parochial and continuing interest in the wellbeing of the residents and their surroundings.

In December 2023 the long serving Chair resigned, but the Vice Chair stepped forward and was duly elected unanimously. The Board was quickly brought to full strength with two eminently suitable candidates.

2023 also saw one Resident leave, in September. The vacancy notice was posted throughout the Pouletts’ catchment area, a short list of qualifying candidates drawn up and one appointed. He moves in early 2024.

The annual Fire Inspection, conducted by a new Fire Officer, revealed an established colony of bats in the loft area. Securing their future before loft fire walls are installed is a lengthy, bureaucratic and expensive process which will go into 2024. The Fire Service is being kept abreast of any progress and are sympathetic to our position.

The Charity has a stable financial position, with strong reserves.
