The Members appoint a Committee from amongst their number at the Annual General Meeting. Other volunteer committee members are coopted from time to time.

The main activities undertaken for the public benefit are the rehearsals and subsequent performance of concerts by the Thomas Tallis Society Choir and Orchestra. 

The Trustees are confident that performance of such concerts constitute a public benefit according to the guidance of the Charities Commission.

## **Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year** 

This year 2022-23, TTS’s 57[th] year, we have again performed five concerts over the year.  Unusually this year two of the five concerts were directed by guest conductors; Mark Wilde back for his second helping and Olivia Shotton. 

This has also been the seventh year of the Choral Ambassador scheme which we launched in 2015. 

## **Concerts** 

In September, we did a concert of **English Song for Choir and Piano** directed by Mark Wilde, who previously conducted Pledges of Heavn’s’ Joy back in October 2019, with David OwenNorris at the piano.  We performed Elgar’s Scenes from the Bavarian Highlands, Vaughan Williams Three Shakespeare Songs (celebrating 150 years since his birth) and Jonathan Dove’s The Passing of the Year. 

The concert took place not long after the death of the Queen.  We hope that the programme was a fitting tribute; three great British composers that she had met and for whom they had composed or dedicated music; setting great English poetry from Shakespeare to Tennyson. 

For some reason we sold very few tickets in advance for this concert but in the event the audience was not bad at all. 

In November we did **A Concert for** 

**Remembrance Day** featuring James MacMillan’s All the hills and vales along.  It was wonderful to sing again with a brass ensemble, Regent Brass, who proved popular with our audience. The concert included a third performance of Kerensa Briggs Media Vita and a second of Cecilia MacDowell’s The Lord is Good. 


The concert also included two UK premieres 


and a world premiere.  Two brass pieces were UK premieres; Tallis Figures based on an organ work by Thomas Tallis and Imagined Dances which takes a number of works by William Byrd and John Dowland and transports them into a contemporary setting. Epiphany, by Bernard Hughes was a commision for one of TTS’s longest serving members Philippa John, celebrating her 50[th] year with TTS and using words written by her son Hywel John.

Section D                      Achievements and performance 

In December we decided against doing Messiah and did a programe of English Christmas music titled **A Very English Christmas** and including Vaugham Williams Fantasia on Christmas Carols, Britten A Ceremony of Carols with step-out solos from the choir and continuing to learn Finzi repetoire, In Terra Pax.  We also tried another first – some carols with audience participation. 

Emily Jennings, who was one of TTS’s first Choral Ambassadors, came back to sing in this concert as her final concert with the choir.  Emily’s professional singing career has taken off and it was lovely to have her back for one last concert with TTS. 

The concert was very popular – we sold over 250 tickets with additional audience on the night. 

We did not perform in January, our first concert of 2023 was in March – **Brahms Requiem** performed in an arrangement for piano and small string band by Iain Farrington. 

Alex Bower-Brown returned to sing the baritone solo and we were especially pleased to have Naomi Quant, a regular member of the TTS soprano line-up, sing the soprano solo. 

We were also happy this was our first collaboration with St Paul’s Sinfonia.  St Paul’s Sinfonia is a Chamber Orchestra, the longest established resident orchestra at St Alfege, performing 9 or 10 concerts a year. 

Again we had an excellent audience (possibly helped by the St Paul’s connection) and actually made a small profit on this concert. 

And lastly for the year, **A French Collection** , directed by Olivia Shotton.  Olivia took some of the December concert rehearsals establishing a rapid rapport with the choir and as Eamonn was not available for this concert, we invited her to conduct and she did not disappoint.  The preparation she had done on the French was particularly impressive as she coached us through medieval French, modern French as well as something half way between. 

We had a pretty good audience and everybody was treated to macarons with drinks afterwards. A fitting end to the season.
