## **Annual Report of the Trustees of Rochdale Unitarian Church**

The Trustees present their annual report and financial statements for the year ended 31 March 2022 in accordance with the Charities Act 1993 and the 2006 Charities Act. The charity is governed by the Trust Deed dated 29 March 1974 and is registered with the Charity Commission under registration number 245932.

The object of the General fund of the charity is to provide and maintain the church premises for use as a Unitarian Church and Sunday school or day school.

The object of the Church Manse fund is to assist in providing a manse or housing allowance for a minister appointed by the congregation of the Rochdale Unitarian Church.

The object of the Mrs Clough Legacy fund is the provision of benevolence locally.

The designated funds are held for investment and administrative purposes only.

Our income from investments has shown a decrease of 4.5%. This reflects another difficult year for many companies due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and a consequential reduction in dividends. Expenditure was again significant due to the re-roofing of the main roof costing £48,198. Other repairs were on lighting & other electrical improvements.

Due to market trends our portfolio of investments has shown a small loss of £11,140.

This reflects the fact that stock markets had already substantially recovered from the Covid-19 outbreak at the previous year end. Our investment in Scottish Mortgage Investment Trust has shown a loss of £33,300 in the year, but this stock showed a massive gain of £169,050 last year. It invests heavily in fast growing technology companies such as Amazon, Tesla and Netflix all of which performed well in the pandemic but have experienced a correction subsequent to life getting back to normal. The war in Ukraine has also had a negative effect on markets.

Turning to Public Benefit, a wide range of groups and individuals unconnected with the church, have made use of our excellent facilities. These include Prima Dance, Norden Cards, Philatelic Society, Photographic Society, Zumba, Rebecca Kanku Singing, Action Together, College Bank Support, CHA Walking & Rochdale Ramblers.

Our religious services are also open to all comers.

Approved by the Trustees on 2022 and signed on their behalf by

John Illingworth - Secretary

## **TRUSTEES OF ROCHDALE UNITARIAN CHURCH**

## **Independent examiner’s report to the trustees and members of Rochdale Unitarian Church**

I report on the accounts of the Trust for the year ended 31 March 2022, which are set out on pages 1 to 10.

Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner

The charity’s trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts. The charity’s trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year under section 43(2) of the Charities Act 1993 (the 1993 Act) and that an independent examination is needed.

It is my responsibility to:

- examine the accounts under section 43 of the 1993 Act;

- to follow the procedures laid down in the general Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 43(7)(b) of the 1993 Act; and

- to state whether any particular matters have come to my attention.

## **Basis of independent examiner’s report**

My examination was carried out in accordance with the general Directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts and seeking explanations from you as trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a ‘true and fair view’ and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below.

## **Independent examiner’s statement**

In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention:

(1) which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in any material respect the requirements:

- to keep accounting records in accordance with section 41 of the 1993 Act; and

- to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and comply with the accounting requirements of the 1993 Act

have not been met; or

(2) to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
