We have been blessed throughout the year to be cared for pastorally by our Vicar, Fr Stuart Howes, alongside Revd Heather Page, Fr David Shinton and our Reader Emeritus, Joyce Garbett.

A formal Licensing Service took place in December for Fr Stuart Howes, led by Bishop Sarah, Shrewsbury and Ven. Paul Thomas, Archdeacon of Salop.

Bishop Michael, Lichfield and Rev Dr Rebecca Lloyd spent Ash Wednesday and Holy Week up to Easter Saturday within the parish.

An oak tree has been planted at Holy Trinity to celebrate HM The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, thanks to Pauline Ashworth.

## **To the PCC of Hadley Holy Trinity and Wellington Christ Church**

This report on the accounts of the PCC for the year ended 31st December, 2021 is in respect of an examination carried out under Regulation 3 (3) of the Church Accounting Regulations 1997 and s.43 of the Charities Act 1993 (the Act).

## **Respective responsibilities of the PCC and the examiner**

As members of the PCC you are responsible for the preparation of the financial statements; you consider that the audit requirement of the Regulations and s.43 (2) of the Act does not apply. It is my responsibility to issue this report on those financial statements in accordance with the terms of the Regulations.

## **Basis of this report**

My examination was carried out in accordance with the General Directions given by the Charity Commission under s.43 (7)(b) of the Act and to be found in the Church guidance 2006 edition. That examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the PCC and a comparison of the accounts with those records. It also includes considering any unusual items or disclosures in the financial statements and seeking explanations form you as trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently I do not express an audit opinion on the view given by the accounts.

## **Independent examiner's statement**

In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention:

**1.** which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in any material respect the requirements

   - to keep accounting records in accordance with section 41 of the Act; and

   - to prepare financial statements, which accord with the accounting records and comply with the requirements of the Act and the Regulations have not been met: or

**2.** to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.

## **Deanery Synod Meeting 17th May 2021 via Zoom**

The core presentation of this meeting was a presentation by Debbie Huxton about Modern Slavery. She spoke about her experience within this area highlighting her previous roles and what she had learned.

She reflected on John 10:10 _“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life and have it to the full.”_

God’s heart is for the poor, for the vulnerable and for injustice. God can empower us as churches to be encouraged and equipped to act against all forms of injustice. Every life has value, every life deserves freedom.

Facts:

-  There are 800,000 enslaved people in Europe and an estimated 45.8 million in Slavery,

-  24.9 million in forced labour,

-  15.4 in forced marriage.

-  There are 5.4 victims per 100 in modern slavery

-  In the UK there is 2.1 victims per 1000 in modern slavery, 71% are women and children and this rises to 99% in the cases of sexual exploitation.

-  1 in 4 victims are children and 1 in 4 attend churches.

Modern slavery is happening in every town and every city of this country. We can work together to make a change; human life is at risk. If we engage with the issues of social justice, we can make a difference.

## **Deanery Synod Meeting 28[th] September 2021 via Zoom**

The principal presentation was given by Gill Dean, Lichfield Diocesan Relationship Manager for the Children’s Society. Gill began by giving a reminder of the history of The Children’s Society and the work it does protecting children from abuse and neglect. They have worked with 11,513 young people mostly with 10 – 18-year-olds, 3,049 adults and carers. The society has been able to reach 23,941 young people through preventative activities and 14,514 professionals. This information was given from the 2020 Impact Report.

The Children’s Society is a campaigning organisation, and they campaign and lobby the government to give a voice to young people. There were 33,626 actions to support the campaigns of the Society and there has been 4.4 million positive impacts on young people through the policy and campaigning work. In the diocese there are different services on offer. Shropshire Beam, Sandwell Beam, Climb and the Black Country Advocacy Service. Gill talked about the work of the services. Currently due the pandemic a lot of the face-to-face appointments are on hold, but telephone and online meetings are being offered. The Good Childhood Report has just been launched.

The Society feels it can make the difference by asking children directly what they feel they need to make a real impact on their wellbeing.

## **Deanery Synod Meeting 19[th] January 2022 via Zoom**

The principal presentation was given by Louise Williams of CJ Williams Funeral Directors

Louise spoke about bereavement and funeral provision. Funerals have changed over the last 20 years. In 2003, most funerals were held in church followed by burial, whereas now, they are more often held in Crematoriums. There has been a huge rise in families opting for civil celebrants or humanist funerals instead of religious services.

The shift to crematoriums has a number of factors – less burial space available, the cost of burials can sometimes mean the families will opt for something more within their means. Crematorium services can be seen to be more convenient – all under one roof, availability to stream services to loved ones who cannot attend, ability to show visual tributes.

Funerals no longer need to be held in recognised buildings and now they can take place in – hotels, village halls, private homes, gardens, or direct in the churchyard, local authority burial grounds or green burial sites.

Registrars and local authority staff who have undertaken the training can now take funerals, in fact anyone can enrol with the Institute of civil celebrants, and they provide training, ongoing continuous personal development and professional indemnity insurance. These civil celebrants actively approach funeral directors to “sell their services” and the service they provide will incorporate pretty much whatever the family wants, this can include prayers, and hymns. A humanist service however will have no religion or faith in it.

Services which happen now are much more complex and often have many different elements and funeral directors must juggle the dynamics of complex families which can be exceedingly difficult.

The pandemic brought many difficulties, reduced numbers, short services, no family pallbearers, and for the families they were also denied opportunities to say goodbye with restrictions on who could go to funeral home to visit a chapel of rest, these family members will often have been denied the opportunity to visit with sick loved ones before their death because of the restrictions in place.

For all who said goodbye to a loved one during the pandemic the affects of grieving and coming to terms with loss is difficult and many are still struggling with grief many months and years later. What next? Louise offered some ideas of what could be offered to those needing to grieve :

-  Could the Remembrance Services be re-instated with more than one a year. Funeral directors have contact with many bereaved families than individual churches see, who though they did not use a minister for the service may well come to a Remembrance Service in a church.

-  Coffee mornings offering a chance to talk in a safe and welcoming place building support networks which are desperately needed. Funeral directors could pass on the information direct to families at the time of booking.

-  Start building relationships with nursing homes, get to know the residents and their families and offer support

-  Training sessions for funeral staff to build up confidence on what a church service is like

-  Create small funeral teams so faces become familiar and word of mouth is important so choose carefully you only get one go at a funeral things cannot go wrong i.e., missing dates, names etc.

-  Create pastoral teams who can follow up after the funeral – not everyone will have the confidence to go to a group setting such as café.

## **Deanery Synod Meeting 4[th] April 2022 via Zoom**

The principal presentation was by representatives of the nation Messy Church Advisory Team, who spoke about Messy Church values and different formats of Messy Church. Messy Church values are about being Christ-centred, for all ages, based on creativity, hospitality and celebration

- Christ-centred Messy Church is a church that helps people encounter Jesus as Lord and Saviour.

   - Messy Church is part of BRF which believes, with the historic churches, in one God, who is Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

- All-age Messy Church is for adults and children to enjoy together. Every element aims to be relevant and accessible to all ages.

- Creativity Messy Church reflects the creativity of God in its imaginative hands-on approach to being church together.

- Hospitality Messy Church is outward-facing, welcoming everybody to enjoy the hospitality and unconditional love of God.

   - Messy Church is about hospitality, expressed most evidently by eating together.

- Celebration Messy Church reflects a God of joy who wants his people to have life in all its fullness.

Safeguarding - Each Messy Church must adhere to health and safety and safeguarding laws and guidelines and have established health and safety and safeguarding policies in place that it can provide on request. BRF cannot be held responsible for any matters relating to health and safety or safeguarding in respect of any Messy Church.

The Deanery has now completed Phase 2 of the Diocesan ‘Shaping for Mission’ Strategy and is moving forward to Stage 3. At each synod meeting we are updated with reports of the strategy progress.

-  We believe that we are called by Jesus to share the good news that God exists, that the Christian faith is true, and that there is immense value in knowing and loving Jesus and in growing as his disciples.

-  We love Telford, which is our home, and the people of Telford, and we want them to come to know the freedom of Kingdom of God.

-  We see an opportunity to set God’s people free to maximise the potential of their gifts, whether lay or ordained.

-  We have been empowered and given responsibility, on a local level, to implement the diocesan focus on becoming younger and more diverse, and the national focus on growing missional disciples by becoming simpler, humbler, and bolder.

-  We recognise that the C-19 pandemic has accelerated changes and declines in the church that were already occurring. We are fewer, older, and less financially secure than we were. The surrounding society is more secular and busier, with more options.

## **Produced in accordance with Rule M5(1)(e) of the Church Representation Rules**

It seems strange, when I look back on 2021, to think that we weren’t meeting in person for almost the first quarter of the year. After closing post-Christmas our first service with the church open was a joyful Easter Sunday. Zoom church was difficult, but in so many ways a blessing. It made me think of new ways to go about worshipping compared with what I am used to and I thank you all for your perseverance with it. One of my favourite things to come out of it was our Rosary Prayer group. This group still meets, in person now, once a month at Christ Church and offer prayers that have been requested from parishioners. I believe this is something new to the parish and it’s been nice to meet with people regularly for the sole purpose of praying for the parish and its needs. It’s also nice to pray for something over a period of time and to see it come to a conclusion, for example the birth of a new baby in the church!

Worshipping in person regularly again has enabled us to get into a pattern of worship that I have thoroughly enjoyed. I am grateful as always to our amazing ministry team. We are so lucky here to have a variety of voices offered on a Sunday and other services. The experience and expertise of Joyce our Reader as well as Rev’d Heather and Fr David is something that I treasure dearly, and my sincere thanks go out to them all. I look forward to working with them in the future and building on the work we have started.

Christmas this year was a particular highlight, a first “proper” in-person Christmas with a varied programme of services leading up to Christmas Day. We had really good attendances at these with a lot of the congregation joining in with various roles and I’ll look forward to next year’s Advent and Christmas programme with great anticipation (yes, I am thinking about Christmas already, occupational hazard).

Our serving team grew in number by one, with Robert joining Kevin and Roger. It’s such a vital part of the smooth running of our worship here to have such skilled and dedicated servers, under the watchful eye of Roger and his many years of experience there is so much work that goes on behind the scenes to make this happen. As well as our new addition it’s been brilliant to see Kevin add to his skills by training to use the thurible, there’s a lot to remember in this role and I’m sure you’ll agree he is doing a great job. We have also recently seen the return of the serving team at Holy Trinity (including more new people) which has really made a difference to our worship there. Could you become a server? It’s something I enjoyed greatly before I was ordained and I would highly recommend it.

We have had lots of new music in our services which has been enhanced by those coming on a Monday night to singing practice which means that by Easter 2022 we will have completed a whole year’s worth of new music that will keep us going for many years to come. My thanks go to Carrie, the newest member of our music team. She joined us in our hour of need and has been a real blessing to us. She has coped admirably with the endless new music I’ve thrown at her and we look forward to seeing her grow further in her role as organist.

The gradual easing of restrictions has seen a return of One Parish social events, something I’d heard about before I got here and I haven’t been disappointed. Not only are they a great way of raising much needed funds for the church it’s always good to get together as brothers and sisters in Christ for fun and fellowship. Thanks to all who help organise these.

**Page 26** The Parish of Hadley Holy Trinity and Wellington Christ Church Parochial Church Council

One of the big highlights of the year for me was the wonderful confirmation and baptism service that took place on the feast of Christ The King in November. What an occasion it was and what amazing witness to have nine members of our church family stand up in front of us and Bishop Sarah to declare their faith and trust in God. The process running up to that day was a thoroughly enjoyable one and I continue to be grateful to them all for sharing it with me.

It was a Bishop heavy year with the great honour of Bishop Michael and his chaplain Rev’d Dr Rebecca Lloyd joining us for Ash Wednesday and Holy week. I’m so pleased that they chose our parish in this corner of Telford. A lot of you who came to the services commented to me how much you enjoyed this and I echo those words and I look forward to inviting them back at some point for a Sunday service.

All these great things from the previous year certainly makes me look forward to the coming year with great encouragement and excitement. With the optimistic hope that restrictions are a thing of the past, a small group of us met to discuss the mission of the church moving forward into 2022. The main focus of this discussion was to “put the churches on the map” both in a literal physical sense (both churches are situated a little out of sight) but also by reaching out to our communities. There are a lot of exciting new plans in place to put prayer walks into the church grounds given the amount of footfall we have at both churches, but also getting information about our wonderful parish out to new housing estates as well as the encouraging number of new people we have coming through our doors on a Sunday. Wouldn’t it be great to tell them what we are all about here and enhance the great welcome we already give? We are grateful as always to Richard who with his technical knowhow already works tirelessly to make sure the people in the parish are kept up to date with the latest goings on and no doubt he will play a vital role in this new initiative.

We also have some lovely plans in mind to reach out to the young people in our parish, in particular Hadley Under 5s who have met with Rev’d Heather to discuss having their own garden area at Holy Trinity, something we would love to use for our baptism preparation as well. We are also committing to following up each baptism that takes place here for the first 5 years of the child’s life with helpful literature that the families can use to educate their child about the Christian faith.

We have also discussed with our dedicated pastoral team about how we follow up the many funerals we have at One Parish. There are many bereaved families that benefit from the phone calls the team give after a funeral, some of which are still going on from before my time here. In 2022 we would like to build on this by offering a bereavement café once a month in Wellington, in partnership with the other churches in the area as well as in the Hadley area at Holy Trinity. This will be an opportunity for people to meet with those going through similar situations, something that is vital in the grieving process. I have met and discussed this with our local funeral directors who are happy to come on board and let their clients know about it. Could you be someone to volunteer to help with this?

In 2022 we also have our pilgrimage to Walsingham to look forward to. This will be a wonderful trip to make together I’m sure. Please do pray for all those who are going and let us know if you would like us to offer prayers for you while we are there.

I’m also looking forward to more of our bible discussion groups to take place during 2022. They are always enjoyable and a vital part of our discipleship. If you’ve never been to one, why not try it this year?

For everything we have planned and with everything else we do here, we rely on the prayerfulness and generosity of you. Times are changing and financially things will become difficult for all, including the church. If you can, I would urge you to regularly review your giving. If you are in a

**Page 27**

position to increase your giving this would give vital help, not only for the day to day running of the church buildings but also to fund our mission and outreach.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Nick our treasurer for all that he does to make sure our finances are recorded and run as smoothly as they are. It’s never an easy job but Nick is always on hand to answer questions and provide guidance for us all. Thanks also go to Lis our PCC secretary for all her hard work and vital organisation skills.

I would also like to thank our PCC, for their hard work and faithfulness within the life of the church. As I’ve stated in previous reports, I feel very lucky here that I have four amazing church wardens to share ideas with, ask for advice and just generally be around to enable the smooth running of the church on a day to day basis. Ann, Colin, Lynda and Thelma, thank you so much for all you do, for your prayers and dedication to the life and witness of One Parish Telford.

Finally, I would like to thank you all for making my time here so enjoyable. Knowing that you are praying for me and my family is very comforting to us all and I hope you know you are in my prayers too. I cherish the time we have spent together and look to the future knowing that all we do together we will do in faith and trust in Almighty God.

May God continue to bless all that we do here.

**A Report on the Fellowship Group for the Parochial Year 2021 - 2022**

The Fellowship Group meet on the first Tuesday of each month (except January) at 12.30 pm at Christ Church. New members, both men and women, whether you are a church-goer or not, are both warmly welcomed.

Due to Covid restrictions the group did not start to meet again until August 2021 and no speakers were booked due to the uncertainty of the pandemic. In November we were able to celebrate an enjoyable and patriotic ,(if just a little bit delayed from May), a 76th anniversary of V.E. Day.

2022 started with a meal out together at The Swan Hotel, Wellington in February. In April, we welcomed Rev. Heather Page, who along with us talked about our favourite hymns and Father Stuart Howes and his wife, Vicki, entertained us with their beautiful singing and guitar playing in May. Next month, June, we are commemorating The Queen's Platinum Jubilee with a buffet box tea party.

We are looking forward to a full and varied diary which is booked for the following months.

**A Report on the Pastoral Care Team for the Parochial Year 2021 - 2022**

Although I have the title of Pastoral Team Co-ordinator, it is the team that does all the work so, many thanks for the hours that team members give to others.

Post pandemic we are able to meet monthly in person, rather than just through the wonders of technology. Home Communions are organised for those who cannot attend church and the team have continued to follow up after funerals that happen both in church and at the crematoria.

Some of the contacts made after a funeral are for a brief time, others may continue for many months.

This year we have introduced a card to be sent on the first anniversary of each bereavement – a reminder that we still think of those grieving and hold them and their loved ones in our prayers.

## **A Report on the Social & Fund Raising Group for the Parochial Year 2021 - 2022**

After the Covid-19 Lockdowns, it has been lovely to start having fundraising and social events again.

2021 started off with two 12 hour Hymnathons that I did at both churches. They were both well attended.

Thelma and John Davies put on a Curry and Quiz Night which was great fun and also well attended.

Lynne Hansell presented a brilliant jigsaw event which got us all hooked on doing jigsaws, and she also did a Swimathon for church funds.

Nick and Liz ran another Scalextric and Film event.

Heather Page and I presented a Christmas Concert and Pudding Afternoon, including VOCE entertaining us.

This year we have already had the beginning of my recital series on Friday lunchtimes; weekly during Lent and now the first Friday in the month.

Heather and Richard put on a a Fish & Chip and Bingo Night which proved very popular.

Colin Corpus hosted a St George's Day Party, which was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone.

More exciting events planned for this year including:

- £ The Howes Musical and Pudding Event

- £ Concerts by the Hadley Orpheus Choir and Wellington Town Band.

- £ Table Top and Bacon Butties on Saturday mornings

- £ Another hymnathon

Plus a lot more.

Thank you to all for your support.

## **Dementia Friendly Churches A Report on the activities of Let’s Meet Together for the Parochial Year 2021 - 2022**

We had our first meeting of Let’s Meet Together after the pandemic on September 16th 2021 having kept in touch with the members during that time. Unfortunately, we had lost a few members due to death or illness but since then we have started to rebuild with some new members now that people are gaining confidence to come out again. We have had some lively meeting each month since then including singing sessions, the ever-popular Boules and some of John Davies’ “magic”. We have more meetings planned for this year and would welcome new members.

We have had several generous donations from relatives of members and look forward to going forward from strength to strength this year. Many thanks to our loyal helpers without whom we would not be able to continue.

## **A Report on the Mothers’ Union for the Parochial Year 2021 - 2022**

We remain a small but enthusiastic group. We have had a membership service in March to welcome to new members to our group and to admit a new member.

We are a group who demonstrate and practice our values in different ways. Some members attend the daily midday prayers on Facebook, others attend diocesan meetings and quiet days as and when they are available.

Projects this year have included:

-  creating toiletry and treat bags for victims of domestic abuse with the generous support from members of the congregation

-  knitting gowns for stillborn babies

-  supporting gifts for brand-new members of the church!

-  Inviting a speaker to talk about modern slavery - Open to all church members

As Covid restrictions lifted, we stopped the weekly catch-ups on Zoom, which had provided social contact for those who missed the fellowship at church.

We generally meet on the third Wednesday of the month at 7 pm. Either face-to-face or via Zoom. All are welcome to come along and see what we get up to!

Kate Austin continues to chair the group, so please do contact her if you would like any further information: 07815 923 662.
