It has 4 million members in 84 countries. The vision of Mothers’ Union is of a world where God’s love is shown through loving, respectful, and flourishing relationships. Mothers’ Union will promote the welfare of children, young people, and vulnerable adults by aiming to prevent abuse from occurring, to protect those who are at risk of abuse and to respond well to those who have been abused. Email: lisa.marriott@derby.anglican.org Tel: 01332 388678 ## Safeguarding Annual Report We continue to follow the Mothers’ Union Safeguarding Policy, and Safeguarding is on the Agenda at all Trustee meetings. During 2025 there were no safeguarding concerns reported to me. Mary Sumner House have a new Safeguarding Lead, Deena Patel. During 2026 Deena will be putting together a training programme for Diocesan Safeguarding Links, and training that members will be able to access. _Carol Johnston Diocesan Safeguarding Link_ ## Diocesan President’s Report This is the start of my second triennium as Diocesan President. It has seen me leaving my work at Mary Sumner House, spending less time travelling, and more time with my family. As I write this, we are already a quarter of the way through 2026, and as I look towards the future and the end of my time as Diocesan President, I realise that we are in need of new Trustees and someone to take over the role of DP. I would be more than happy to spend next year working with a potential new DP, to help them learn the ropes. It is such a rewarding role, you get invited to so many different parts of the diocese, and what's more, you get to eat lots of cake!!!! We all love our organisation so much, but without new Trustees and a new Diocesan President we will not be able to continue, so please do give this some prayerful consideration. This triennium has seen me building stronger relationships with the prisons in our diocese, and also with the other DPs in our Midlands Cluster. They have been a huge source of friendship and support, as we are all experiencing similar challenges. We have had a new Provincial President in Comfort Idowu-Fearon, who has a very different leadership style to our previous PP, Kathryn Anderson. Comfort is developing a provincial team, which means the work of managing the province is spread more evenly amongst members, which is definitely a positive! 3 Diocese of Derby Mothers’ Union Annual Report 2025 I would like to finish by saying that none of this could be done without the diocesan team. I will not name everyone, but you have all been amazing, and I could not do this without you all. Thank you. _Emily Brailsford_ _Diocesan President, Diocese of Derby Mothers’ Union_ ## Annual Administrative Report There were 301 members in the diocese at the start of 2025 (plus a number of nonsubscription paying IMPC members). There were five Trustee meetings during the year via Zoom in alternate months, starting in January. There was no Trustee meeting in August. The AGM and Council meeting was held in May 2025, with a further online Council meeting held in November 2025. The Diocesan _Newsletter_ , which was launched in March 2023, has continued to be produced and circulated to members on a regular basis. _Alison and Edward Orchard_ ## Diocesan Chaplain Revd Michael Futers took over the role of Diocesan Chaplain in February 2025 at the Commissioning Service held in Derby Cathedral. The Diocesan Festival Service was held in All Saint’s, Hulland Ward in August. In November, Revd Futers led the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Based Violence service in Derby Cathedral, which was well attended, and well received. Midday Prayers on Zoom have continued to be well attended each Friday, and we are very grateful to all who volunteer to take a turn writing and leading them. We are always looking for new volunteers, and if anyone would like to try this, please get in touch with Revd Futers. ## Derby City and Mercia Deanery Report Derby City and Mercia Deanery consisted of five branches and a number of Diocesan Members in 2025. The Deanery Festival was held on Mary Sumner Day (9[th] August) in St Werburgh’s Spondon on a beautiful afternoon. The celebrant and preacher was the Deanery Chaplain – Revd Eleanor Berry, and we were entertained to a delicious tea afterwards by the members of the branch. It was good to see some of the Diocesan Members at the Deanery Festival as well as Vice Presidents Wendy Fitch and Alison Orchard (who is also our Deanery Secretary). Members also attended the Diocesan Festival in Hulland Ward, as well as the service for the Sixteen Days of Activism in November in the Cathedral. A number in the deanery are regularly present online at Midday Prayers on Fridays. The five branches in the combined deanery continue to be well attended; each meeting monthly with interesting programmes related to the MU theme. In addition the Cathedral Branch has a monthly Prayer Group online. The two branches in the City Deanery are now run by committees, each with a Coordinator rather than a Branch Leader. Members continue to be very generous in their support, providing food and clothing for asylum seekers and refugees, as well as support for Foston Hall, Make A Mother’s Day, Summer of Hope Appeal and other Mothers’ Union Charities. _Madelaine Goddard_ _Deanery President, Derby City and Mercia Deanery_ 4 Diocese of Derby Mothers’ Union Annual Report 2025 ## SE Derbyshire Deanery Report We are effectively only three working branches in the deanery. Kirk Hallam is the largest branch, and meets regularly on the first Wednesday in the month. They have a varied programme, and are good at supporting Mothers' Union fund raising and local appeals. Stanley Common meet on the second Monday each month. They are a group who respond to current appeals, and in 2025 sourced a Moses basket which was filled with baby necessities, and was given to a refugee in Derby whose baby is due in June. This has been added to by gifts from Kirk Hallam, Marlpool and Morley. Codnor is a small group who meet at branch leader Elizabeth Smith's home. The branch are missing her husband, Graham, but still meet monthly for a service and prayer. They are always knitting blankets and other things, which I take to Derby Refugee Solidarity. The orders I get for literature from them are really good for a small branch. Last year saw a lot of changes. Revd Christine French resigned as Deanery Chaplain on taking her new role as priest in charge of West Hallam, Stanley, Stanley Common and Mapperley. As yet we have not found a replacement. Christine Woodward resigned as leader of Stanley Common, and the branch is now run by committee. We have closed our deanery bank account, and it is being managed by the Diocesan Treasurer, Janet Bradshaw. Our Deanery Festival was held at Stanley Common, when we welcomed the new Area Dean, Revd Dawn Knight, as our preacher. She talked about her experience of fostering and adoption. We had to cancel our annual walk, which was to fundraise for the Summer of Hope appeal, as it was far too warm for walking on the day we had arranged. Some of us did it when the weather was more suitable, and the sponsor money was all transferred to the ones who walked. Sheila Randall, Wendy Fitch and I have tried to visit other branches and deaneries when we can, and have been made most welcome. It is good to see what is happening in other branches, and exchanging ideas and speaker information is always good. We are looking forward to our Fund Raiser for 2026, when we are doing Afternoon Tea at West Hallam rectory on 1[st] July. The well dressings at West Hallam will also see us having a stall with information about Mothers' Union and literature and cards for sale. _Beryl Murdy Deanery President, SE Derbyshire Deanery_ ## Indoor Members Indoor Members continue to receive letters and cards from Emily Brailsford and myself at Christmas, and a card and letter from myself at Easter. Birthday cards are also sent, but unfortunately I do not have the birthdates of nearly half the Indoor Members, which means that they miss out. The day and the month is all I need, if the year of birth is preferably to be unknown. We currently have 27 members on the list. It is always a pleasure to receive a card or letter thanking me for the mail received. _Ruth Breedon_ _Indoor Members Representative_ ## Diocesan Members In 2025 there were over 50 Diocesan Members in the diocese, including four male members, several Diocesan Trustees, and five holding MU Diocesan office. Four were ordained, including several senior members of the clergy. A number of the Diocesan Members are also members of the IMPC, and some attend occasional branch meetings in their local areas or meet together for fellowship. Members are invited to (and many attend) both Diocesan and Deanery events. It was good to see some at the Diocesan Festival in Hulland Ward and at the Deanery Festivals, and the service for 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Based Violence. 5 Diocese of Derby Mothers’ Union Annual Report 2025 I keep in contact with the majority of the Diocesan Members by email – each week sending the link for online Midday Prayers, and a number of the DMs regularly join with the Prayers online. The diocesan _Newsletter_ is sent online too. During the year I wrote to those not online several times and for those who requested it sent the _Newsletter_ by post. It is lovely to receive news from these members and hear how much they value being kept in touch with what is happening in MU now they are no longer able to go regularly to meetings. Sadly during the year two of our Diocesan Members died – Margaret Brookes and Mavis Whitehouse – who had been faithful Mothers’ Union members for many years. May they rest in peace. _Madelaine Goddard Diocesan Members Representative_ ## Literature Mothers’ Union cards and books continue to be well received, and 2025 was another busy year. I think the catalogues are now much more user friendly, and I am grateful for the branches who do their own ordering, as £60 carriage paid is not a huge amount and easily reached. It is particularly good to get orders from churches that no longer have branches, but still like to have Mothers’ Union cards, diaries and calendars. I have also found that giving catalogues to others who might be interested often comes back with an order. Please ask church members who are not Mothers’ Union members to have a look, you never know how much more we could sell. Remember, I always have some stock and am happy to come to a meeting or fund raiser to sell some. Please consider buying the new prayer book, it contains prayers from all round the world, and is very reasonably priced at £5.95. It is called _Lighting the Way_ . It is well set out, and is useful if you are leading or helping with prayers. Thank you for all your orders and for those who order for themselves. _Beryl Murdy Literature Representative_ ## Away From It All With the agreement of the Trustees, we are working with the MU in the Diocese of Leeds to support a family who are visiting their father in Sudbury. The youngest child has to be within half an hour's drive of a children's hospital when he visits his Father. Despite the complicated logistics, the doctors say that the benefit to the child of visiting his father, far outweigh the costs. The drive to Sudbury for the family is three hours each way, and therefore they asked if we could support them with a stay in a Travelodge overnight before their visit. This support will continue until November 2026. We have received the following feedback after their first visit 'Thank you so much for sorting everything for us I really appreciated all your help. We had a lovely visit and everything went smoothly, so I’m really grateful. I’m so grateful for all your help and support it really means so much to us. With everything we’re dealing with as a family, this has brought us some real ease.' _Emily Brailsford AFIA Representative_ ## Diocesan Projects ## _Helpful Books_ We provided books to a number of schools in 2024, and therefore have had no further requests for this during 2025. 6 Diocese of Derby Mothers’ Union Annual Report 2025 ## _Prison Work_ Over the years we have worked extensively with Foston Hall women's prison, which we continue to do. We still hope to re start a Mothers' Union branch within the prison, and wait for the forms from prison that will enable us to do this. Over the last two years we have also formed a relationship with Sudbury open prison and PACT, giving chocolates for the prisoners to give to family at Christmas. We have also recently provided them with 30 prison restart bags. The resettlement governor has asked if we could provide small gifts for the men to give wives or partners who have just given birth, and also asked if we might be able to develop a programme to help reintegrate the prisoners back into their homes and strengthen the family relationship. This is something that our Diocesan President will communicate with the central charity to see if this might be something which can be developed. Finally, a trip to Sudbury's 'Secret Diner' is planned for the 5[th] June 2026. _Emily Brailsford Projects Co-ordinator_ ## Hulland Hippos Baby and Toddler Group The group continues to be well supported by families, with new families replacing leaving families. In 2025 we ran 47 sessions with an average of 20 (21) families and 27 (27) children at each. _* The figures in brackets are from 2024._ Special sessions have included our usual Shrovetide pancakes, Mothers/Carers day, an Easter service with egg hunt, Harvest service, Pudsey Bear morning and Christmas Nativity and party. Thank you to Revd Phil and Revd Lisa for making the Easter, Harvest and Christmas services in church so enjoyable. We have continued having volunteers from Derbyshire’s Breastfeeding Network at Hippos on the 3[rd] Wednesday each month to offer support with infant feeding. ## **The Team** The team of ten includes seven MU members. The ‘husbands’ team’ continue to give wonderful support with setting up, clearing away and kitchen help. We enjoyed having Revd Lisa on the team for part of the year and on her last day said thank you, goodbye and good luck at a fuddle after a session. We had two team meetings and three team lunches this year. ## **Finance** Our 2025 financial statement is a separate document prepared by our treasurer Norma and audited by Janet Garnet. Our bank balance at the end of the year was £1,251.80, but we hadn’t been invoiced for 3 months hall rental at this point. We received a £70 donation from the Nag’s Head which was put towards a woodwork role-play bench. Our other main purchases were a child-height safety mirror and children’s gifts at Easter and Christmas. ## **Safeguarding** Five members completed Foundation level Safeguarding training in March and Penny completed Leadership training in December. All team members now have the required safeguarding training. ## **Health & Safety** Everyone has remained safe at Hippo sessions this year. ## **Visitors** The new headteacher at Hulland Primary school visited Hippos in the summer. MU Trustee Wendy and Alan Fitch came to our Christmas nativity and party. ## **Charitable giving** We raised £390 for Children in Need during a Pudsey Bear session. We donated £60 to Mothers’ Union. _Penny Northall (Hippos Team Leader) Hognaston and Hulland Branch_ 7 Diocese of Derby Mothers’ Union Annual Report 2025 ## Modern Slavery and Anti-Trafficking Nationally there has been a move to re-start the whole work again. At a Zoom meeting at the end of April 2025, there was the usual subjects – Re-Grouping, Terms of Reference, Representation, Programme, etc. Locally, I have spoken to several groups, and all have found the subject difficult because of its continuing presence in the modern world. On a personal level, I shall honour my speaking dates for 2026, after which I will retire from being the Modern Slavery and Anti-Trafficking Officer. _Revd Alan Fitch_ _Modern Slavery and Anti-Trafficking Officer_ ## IT Support The roll out of the Mary Sumner House’s new CRM system and membership database was completed in early 2025. The new system is much more logical and far easier to understand and use. The system now works in real time, so changes, additions, or deletions are instant. In the old system, some transactions could take days to show up in the system. Following the launch of the new MSH membership database, I completely re-wrote the diocesan membership database, moving it from Microsoft Access to Microsoft Excel. During the re-write I took the opportunity to mirror the new MSH membership database. As a result, it is now possible to automatically compare the membership information held by the diocese, and the membership information held by MSH, and carry out any necessary updates or corrections more easily.
