Mothers’ Union Statement of Commitment: Safeguarding

“As an organisation concerned with Christian principles and ministry in family life, the nurture and protection of children, young people and vulnerable adults is at the heart of Mothers’ Union both individually as members and collectively as an organisation, Mothers’ Union has a duty to protect children, young people and vulnerable adults, doing everything possible to ensure that they are safe when involved in Mothers’ Union activities.

“We will follow the safeguarding policies and practices issued by the Anglican Church, the Diocese of Derby, and the Anglican Consultative Council (ACC) charter for the safety of people within the churches of the Anglican Communion. Mothers’ Union will promote the welfare of children, young people, and vulnerable adults by aiming to prevent abuse from occurring, to protect those who are at risk of abuse and to respond well to those who have been abused. We will follow procedures to enable the identification of those who may present a risk to others and, should this occur, seek appropriate pastoral support for them.”

Safeguarding Annual Report

As we continue to follow the Church of England directives for Safeguarding as our general guide, our Trustees have or are in the process of, completing the necessary safeguarding training. A new training matrix has been issued which asks that all Trustees also complete the Awareness of Domestic Abuse training which is provided either in person or by Zoom in this diocese.

The Disclosure and Barring Service Checks (DBS) are now required every three years rather than every five. We continue to make sure our Trustees are up to date with this.

A document has been produced and distributed to branch leaders on Safeguarding Procedures as a guidance to keeping everyone in a safe environment.

Diocesan President’s Report

My first year as Diocesan President has been quite hard for me, so firstly I want to thank everyone for their love, prayers and support, especially Vice-Presidents Wendy, Alison, our Trustees, Secretary Carol and Treasurer Janet, our Chaplain Eleanor, and Edward, who have helped keep things running smoothly.

In November 2022 Carol retired as our Diocesan Secretary, but has been co-opted onto the Trustee board as the Safeguarding Officer. I would like to thank her for all the work she has done to support me and the diocese. Alison Williams has also retired as our Roots and Branches editor. I would like to thank her for her eleven years in the role.

Most branches are now back to meeting face to face, although we still have midday prayers over Zoom, along with many of our Trustee meetings. COVID hit Mothers’ Union in Derbyshire hard, and has meant the closure of a number of our branches. Whilst I hope that next year we can possibly start to work on building up membership, I urge you to remind any past members whom you speak to, that they can still belong to Mothers’ Union as Diocesan Members.

With membership in mind, I am in the process of attending all of the deanery synods to speak about Mothers’ Union and what we do. If anyone has any good photographs of anything Mothers’ Union related, please send them over so we can use them in our publicity. Whilst on the topic of Zoom, many provincial meetings are also being held on Zoom, which means no mileage costs at all. I play an active role in the meetings for the Britain and Ireland Domestic Abuse Steering Group, which are held on Zoom on a bi-monthly basis. This has been very exciting, and I hope that next year Derbyshire can be a leading light in the fight against domestic abuse and violence against women and girls.

Mini Mothers’ Union has slowly started to gather momentum, and we now have a small group of children who are enthusiastic about making a difference to their community under the banner of Mothers’ Union. If anyone has any children or young people that they think might be interested in joining, please let me know.

Emily Brailsford Diocesan President, Diocese of Derby Mothers’ Union

Diocesan Chaplain’s Report

I began 2022 by putting together the service for the commissioning of all officers of the Diocesan Mother’s Union as we began a new Triennium, and welcomed Emily as our new Diocesan President, giving thanks for all the work that Beryl and other retiring officers had done. It was lovely to Deacon for Bishop Libby as she commissioned all the new officers. She is a great support to the Mothers’ Union.

My main work this year has been putting together Orders of Service for meetings such as the Deanery and Diocesan Festival Services and putting together the Rota for Midday Prayers each Friday. I have enjoyed taking my turn at leading these Friday prayers on Zoom and it is good to see so many people joining us each week. It would be good if some more people could volunteer to lead them, and I would be willing to guide new leaders in showing them how to put them together if needed.

I also attend Trustees Meeting where I usually open and close the meetings with prayers, and visited the Cathedral Branch and my own branch at Spondon to lead some meditation talks on our theme for the year. I’m happy to come to other branches to do the same kind of talks.

Last December we had our 16 Days of Activism Service on Zoom and that too was well attended. This year we are hoping to return to the Cathedral for that service.

Annual Report 2022

At the present moment, I am trying to encourage more clergy members to join us and help fill more of the Deanery Chaplain posts as we are now down to only three, one of which is myself. If we can fill a few more of these posts, I would like to hold a meeting of all the Chaplains so that we can perhaps plan more activities within each Deanery. Emily and I are also trying to do some Bible Study Evenings on Zoom, over this next year.

I enjoy my work as Diocesan Chaplain and it is a great pleasure to meet so many members in the diocese and work with you. If you know any members who are ill or in need of prayers, please let me know.

Annual Report from the Diocesan Secretary

There were 384 members in the diocese at the start of 2022 (plus 18 non-subscription paying IMPC members). Sadly, five branches closed during the year. They were Allenton, Crich, Darley Dale, South Darley, Staveley and Barrow Hill. In addition four branches became “fellowship groups” these were Bakewell, Loundsley Green, Tideswell and Ripley. There were six Trustee meetings during the year via Zoom in January, two in April, July and two in October.

I decided it was time to retire from the position of Diocesan Secretary at the end of the year. I would like to say a big thank you to all of you for the card and beautiful flowers and gift presented to me at the November meeting. My thanks also go to the Trustees for their care and taking the workload from me during my illness earlier in the year, it really was appreciated. Going forward I will continue the role of Safeguarding Link.

Derby City and Mercia Deanery Report

Derby City and Mercia Deanery consisted of five branches and eight Diocesan Members in 2022.

The Deanery Festival was held on Mary Sumner Day, at Ticknall Parish Church on a beautiful summer’s afternoon. The celebrant was our Deanery and Diocesan Chaplain, Revd Eleanor Berry, and Revd Dr Alan Flintham preached the sermon on the year’s Mothers’ Union theme. The service was followed by a delicious tea prepared by the members of Ticknall branch.

Members took part in the service online for the Sixteen Days of Activism in November, and some were present at the commissioning of our new Diocesan President in January.

The five branches in the combined deanery continue to be well attended and vibrant, each meeting monthly with interesting programmes related to the Mothers’ Union theme. In addition the Cathedral branch has a monthly Prayer Group online. It was good to see some of the Diocesan Members at the Deanery Festival and regularly at Midday Prayers online each Friday.

Members continue to be very generous in their support, providing food and clothing for asylum seekers and refugees, as well as support for Foston Hall and the Mothers’ Union charities.

SE Derbyshire Deanery Report

It was all change at the start of the new triennium, Beryl Murdy becoming our new Deanery President and Wendy Fitch, her predecessor, continuing as Deanery Treasurer. We are also now fortunate to have Revd Christine French as our Deanery Chaplain, having been commissioned in November 2021 by our Mothers’ Union Diocesan Chaplain Revd Eleanor Berry. Revd Christine is an active member of the Kirk Hallam branch and attends our meetings and events whenever her parish commitments allow.

All Branches had resumed their regular meetings once COVID restrictions were fully lifted. At our Committee Meetings Branch Leaders reported on their activities and recommended speakers. These have included topics as diverse as a local undertaker speaking on the Lighter side of Funerals, Child Abuse, Local History, Transformation Now! and the Science of Cooking! Funds were raised in a variety of ways for Mothers’ Union causes, including AFIA and Helpful Books for Schools and towards the Christmas gifts for Foston Hall.

The Deanery has a strong link to Derby Refugee Solidarity and branches continued to support the Moses Baskets project. Members generously donated clothing for the Diocesan Mini MU Nearly New Sale held at Matlock which raised funds for Ukrainian children. Smalley & District Branch members continued to make knitted blankets which were distributed to those in need via the Refugee Centre in Derby.

At our February Committee Meeting plans for the coming year were discussed with the emphasis on the need to raise awareness of all the good work that the Mothers’ Union does, both at home and worldwide, and on increasing membership. An Inspiration Day to attract potential new members was suggested, but it was felt that more thought needed to be given to this idea to make it as effective and appealing as possible.

Kirk Hallam Branch had an overwhelming response to their request for knitted/crocheted flowers to decorate the church for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Celebrations, 4-5,000 being contributed!

A Deanery visit was arranged to an open garden in Stanley Common in July when a raffle was held with the proceeds going to The Summer of Hope Appeal. Non-members were invited to join in this event.

The Deanery Festival was held at All Saints Church, Kirk Hallam in October when we welcomed our new Archdeacon, The Venerable Karen Hamblin. The collection and a Bring and Buy Stall realised £247 for AFIA. Diocesan members from the former Ripley and Swanwick branches are always invited to participate in our services and events.

The Deanery agreed to be responsible for the wrapping of Christmas gifts for Foston Hall, which Beryl then delivered to the prison chaplain in early December.

At our November Committee meeting plans for 2023 were discussed, including delivering the Inspiration Day in June, another sponsored walk in Shipley Park for the Summer of Hope Appeal in early July and a Coffee morning at Stanley Common also in July to attract new, younger members. A Fungus walk in October will be a new venture and the Deanery Festival will also be held in October at All Saints Church, Stanley Common.

Diocesan Members

There were over 70 Diocesan Members in the diocese in 2022, including six male members, two Diocesan Trustees, and eight holding Mothers’ Union Diocesan office. Eight are ordained, including several senior members of the clergy. Most of the new Diocesan Members were from branches that had sadly recently closed.

Diocese of Derby Mothers’ Union

Annual Report 2022

I kept in contact with the majority of the Diocesan Members by email, each week sending the link for online Midday Prayers, and a number of the Diocesan Members regularly join with the prayers online. Roots and Branches was sent online too. I wrote to those members not online on a few occasions, and they received their copy of Roots and Branches by post.

There was a meeting held especially for Diocesan Members in the summer, with a speaker from Sheffield Diocese about their work in prisons. Following a survey in the late autumn it is hoped to have two meetings each year online.

Cards and letters were sent at Easter and Christmas, also birthday cards at the appropriate time. I received letters from two of the relatives saying how much their mothers had enjoyed receiving the mail. I am sure the members enjoy feeling they are still part of Mothers’ Union although isolated.

Mini Mothers’ Union

Mini Mothers’ Union had a slow start due to my illness in 2022. The Mini MU are planning to meet four times per year, and the steering committee and I have come up with an exciting schedule. Once this group is well established we hope to start other Mini MU branches throughout the diocese.

Away From It All

A mum and her autistic son requested a holiday in Skegness. She was offered a seven day holiday but asked if they could have five days instead as she didn’t know if her 7 year old son would settle away from home as he had never been away before. When they arrived back home afterwards she texted me to say they had had a wonderful holiday and thanked Mothers Union.

A lady who had charge of her two granddaughters couldn’t afford new school shoes for them, we sent her a Clarkes’ voucher for £100.00 and she was most appreciative.

A mum and her four children were given tickets for a day visit to Flamingoland. They arrived as it opened and left when it closed. They had the most wonderful time.

We paid for a 53 seater coach to take mums and their children for a day trip to Llandudno. They had a great time.

We paid for 19 children and 16 adults to go to the pantomime at Buxton Opera House in December. Most had never seen a pantomime before. They had a great time.

In all we helped 53 adults and 42 children, but although this seems quite good, we really do need to put more AFIA leaflets out there.

I would like to thank everyone for raising the funds to enable us to do this worthwhile work, and for allowing me to continue to do this.

Foston Hall Women’s Prison

Excellent feedback was received from Foston Hall Prison in early 2022 for the gifts of colouring books and coloured pencils provided by members of the Diocese of Derby Mothers’ Union. These wrapped gifts were given to every prisoner at Christmas 2021 along with a card.

During the year, the colouring books and pencils proved particularly helpful in occupying prisoners locked in their cells, helping to create a calming atmosphere.

Towards the end of 2022, the Prison Chaplain again asked if Mothers’ Union could provide colouring books and coloured pencils for prisoners for Christmas, which members were happy to support.

Mothers’ Union also provided birthday cards, which were used by the Prison Chaplaincy team at Foston to mark prisoners’ birthdays.

Thanks to all members for supporting the Christmas project, and to SE Derbyshire Deanery for acquiring, wrapping, and delivering the gifts.

Hulland Hippos Baby & Toddler Group

Hognaston & Hulland branch have continued to run Hulland Hippos Baby & Toddler group every Wednesday morning at the village hall. Throughout 2022 it continued to be a busy, friendly and popular group. We had an average of 17 families and 25 children attending each session. Nine Mothers’ Union members were on the Hippo team of ten volunteers. Our Christian Mission statement is to share God’s love with all who come.

We celebrated the tenth anniversary of its foundation in November. To share the happy occasion we invited past members of the team and the families who attended the very first session. In December we were delighted to welcome Wendy Fitch to our Christmas Nativity in church and party lunch at the village hall afterwards.

Literature

We had another excellent year for literature sales in 2022. I am so pleased that some branches managed to do their own orders, and judging by the rebate we received everyone remembered to put in the diocese name to allow Derby to get the rebate. This makes a lot of difference to our finances, as it was again over £500. A big thankyou to others who order and sell in their own areas.

I have been happy to discover that Mary Sumner House has listened to reps, and we again have the assorted Christmas packs which contain 10 of the popular cards. Please remember that I am happy to come to branch or Deanery events to sell stock and help to show what good value the cards are. I do have membership cards and badges and the blue prayer books have been reprinted so are again available for new members.

I have a group of customers who have never joined Mothers’ Union, but like what we do, and so always ask for the latest catalogue and regularly buy the Ethical gifts too. It is certainly worth showing the catalogues to others in your Churches and beyond. Thank you all for supporting Mothers’ Union by buying cards, etc. to further the work of our wonderful organisation here and overseas.

Modern Slavery and Anti-Trafficking

This Report has four main parts, which are linked by the subject of Anti-trafficking.

The first part is Modern Slavery, and how people are moved around the world and this country in bondage. The brave telling by Sir Mo Farah about how he was trafficked when young has shown how easily we forget this evil. I had several conversations with members explaining how this can still happen in today's world.

The second part is the role of County Lines in Trafficking and Slavery. I spoke a little of this at the last General Meeting which brings me to the third part - that of training. Clewer is holding two training sessions on this subject online in June 2023. The dates and times are 1st June 10 - 11am and 22nd June also 10-11am.The fourth part of my report is that I have spoken to several Groups and Branches on this subject to increase awareness. I shall be speaking to other branches during 2023, and will be pleased to add to the list.

Modern Slavery and Anti-Trafficking Officer

IT Support

I am continuing to look after the diocesan and Mary Sumner House membership databases. I am also a member of the Mary Sumner House “Member Directory and Database” Community of Interest (COI), and regularly attend the COI meetings.

There were further changes regarding staff at Mary Sumner House during 2022. Daniel Jarvis has now taken over as the Database Officer, and I have built up a good working relationship with him.
