Mothers’ Union Statement of Commitment: Safeguarding

“As an organisation concerned with Christian principles and ministry in family life, the nurture and protection of children, young people and vulnerable adults is at the heart of Mothers’ Union both individually as members and collectively as an organisation, Mothers’ Union has a duty to protect children, young people and vulnerable adults, doing everything possible to ensure that they are safe when involved in Mothers’ Union activities.

We will follow the safeguarding policies and practices issued by the Anglican Church, the Diocese of Derby and the Anglican Consultative Council (ACC) charter for the safety of people within the churches of the Anglican Communion. Mothers’ Union will promote the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults by aiming to prevent abuse from occurring, to protect those who are at risk of abuse and to respond well to those who have been abused. We will follow procedures to enable the identification of those who may present a risk to others and, should this occur, seek appropriate pastoral support for them.”

Diocesan President Report

We certainly didn’t expect another year of restrictions at the end of 2020 but effectively that is what it was for most of us. I have managed to go to a few meetings in 2021 but some of the places I was supposed to visit cancelled because members were still not happy to meet inside.

One of the high lights for me was a trip to Doveholes for their first indoor in person meeting. As I hadn’t driven any distance for over a year Andrew came and took me, he sat in the meeting and enjoyed what I talked about said he had learnt more about the Mothers’ Union in my off the cuff talk in 20 minutes than he had known before. Maybe this says we need to tell our stories round the family. Everywhere I went I took literature and had some good sales. Lots of you have ordered for yourselves and I hope you have all been pleased with the new speed of delivery of orders.

Doing Midday prayers on Zoom has proved extremely popular and lots of people who wouldn’t get into the Cathedral have been able to be involved which is super. The other bonus is that we have had more variety of people leading thank you to everyone who has been prepared to do that it is much appreciated.

On a sad note I went to the closing service at Darley Dale which was a good service led by the vicar and I did speak to some of the members about Diocesan membership. I went to the closing service at Bakewell too which was a real celebration and there they are going to meet as a fellowship group and a few of the members have become Diocesan members. I have not managed to go to any branches in the North East but am aware that at least one branch has closed and another is expecting to close too. In my own South East Derbyshire Deanery we have lost Ripley but hopefully all other branches are now meeting again.

I was so sorry when Joan Pickering died but I was able to represent Mothers’ Union at both her funeral and memorial services. Numbers were very restricted for her funeral but there were a number of members at her memorial service. I am pleased to let you know that Ruth Breedon is taking over as Indoor Members rep.

Hopefully 2022 will see us being able to pick up the pieces and continue to transform Mothers’ Union into the new ways of doing things necessary to increase the membership and vibrancy of this wonderful organisation. I will continue to work as a trustee to help Emily in any way I can for the benefit of all our members.

Beryl Murdy, Diocesan President

Secretaries Report

The Trustees held three meetings during 2021 via Zoom and also kept in constant contact with emails during the year. The May Council meeting was also held by Zoom. The November Council meeting was the first to be held in person since 2020 enabling Beryl, our Diocesan President to be presented with flowers and gifts, giving thanks for her time as President in what turned out to be a very difficult three years both personally and because of the pandemic.

The branches that closed fully in 2021 were: South Darley, Staveley and BarrowHill, Tideswell, Darley Dale and Allenton.

Branches that also technically closed but are continuing as fellowship groups with individual Diocesan Members are Loundsley Green, Ripley and Bakewell.

Total number of paying members at the start of 2021 was 478. (Including non-paying IMPC members, this rises to 499.)

The Trustees agreed, that as we are all now very used to working electronically from home, we would continue to do so in the future and give up the office in Derby Church House, but maintain our official post box there.

Carol Johnston, Diocesan Secretary

NE Deanery

We hope to have a Deanery Meeting at some point, but Stavely Branch Leader has sadly died and there is no one who wishes to take on the role. Loundsley Green Branch members have become Diocesan members as the Leader has been ill and wishes to retire from the post.

Ruth Cable. NE Deanery Secretary

City Deanery

Deanery Festival held at Cathedral in July approximately 30 members attended & a number joined a " socially distanced " picnic on Cathedral Green. Most face to face events were unable to take place because of the pandemic but about 12 regularly take part in Midday prayers on Zoom, & a number " were at" the 16 Days of Activism service. Some members started meeting together again in their branches towards the later part of the year.

Away From It All

A.F.I.A. Supported 59 adults, 44 children and 1 teenager.

Because of Covid 19 two holidays had to be re-booked and therefore extra monies were due because of increases in cost and the holidays were successfully taken. Both families had a lovely time and were pleased to get their holiday at last.

We supported a family of five with a donation of £500 towards a holiday in 2021 at Butlins Spring Harvest. The family have very disabled son and need the extra help given at this Christian venue.

One family of seven were provided with complete bedding sets for seven beds and we received a Thank you card signed by all the family.

Crossroads was supplied with a coach to take thirty one adults and ten children To Llandudno for the day and they all had a wonderful time.

Charis House wanted to take twenty one adults and nineteen children to Buxton Opera House to see Cinderella and we later heard that most of the adults had never been to a pantomime. They had a wonderful time and because Charis House is in Buxton they were able to walk to the venue.

One family of three adults and one child were given two days out go-karting on day one and trampolining on day two. The child needed his brother with him and the brother’s girlfriend supplied the transport and mum provided refreshments. The little boy had a wonderful time.

This is all we did in 2021 and I need to thank everyone for supporting A.F.I.A. at such a difficult time and for allowing me to make so many people happy.

Sandra Westerman, A.F.I.A. Rep

Indoor Member Prayer Circle

There were around 30 members in the IMPC during 2021. Six of these were not linked with an active branch. IMPC members received a Mothering Sunday card, an Easter card and letter, and a Christmas card and letter, as well as a card on their birthday when this was known. All this was in addition to “connected”, the Prayer Diary, and “Roots and Branches”.

A number of subscription paying IMPC members have had their addresses excluded from the Mary Sumner House membership database at the request of the member, their branch, or the member’s family. All non-subscription paying IMPC members are excluded from the MSH membership database.

Very sadly, Joan Pickering, the Indoor Members Representative, passed away at the end of July 2021. Joan had faithfully served the IMPC members for many years, and was greatly appreciated by them. Ruth Breedon has now taken on the role of Indoor Members Representative.

Alison Orchard, Vice President

IT Support Report

The diocesan and Mary Sumner House membership databases worked well during 2021. This was due to the prompt information provided by members and branches when changes were required. This was especially appreciated when a member had passed away, so that both databases could be updated as soon as possible.

There were some changes regarding staff at Mary Sumner House during 2021. David Ewaku, IT Manager, left during 2021. He had always been a great source of help and advice. Renata Pucci has been appointed as the Database Officer, and has worked hard to establish a dialogue with IT Officers in the dioceses. One thing she has provided are “cut off” dates for the Prayer Diary and “connected” mailings, which are helpful when keeping the databases up to date.

Eddie Orchard, IT Support Officer

Diocesan Members

There were 39 Diocesan Members in 2021 including 4 male members., two were Diocesan Trustees & 2 held MU Diocesan office: 5 were ordained , including several senior members of the clergy. There were 6 new Diocesan members - from branches that had recently closed.

It was a difficult year because of the pandemic but I was able to keep in contact with the majority of the Diocesan Members by email. Each week I sent the link for online Midday prayers & a number of the DMs regularly joined with the Prayers online. Roots & Branches was sent online too. Those members not online - I wrote to on a few occasions & they received their copy of Roots & Branches by post. A number of the Diocesan Members joined in the service for 16 Days of Activism & supported the Make A Mothers Day Appeal as well as other MU charities.

Madelaine Goddard, Diocesan Members rep.

Mini MU

Mini MU has been slow getting off the ground as I have felt the need for a little back up. We now have a small steering group who have helped give me the nudge I needed to get things going. At present we only have a few members who are situated around Matlock. Because of the members all being around Matlock, we have decided to have a "Nearly New" clothing sale on the 2nd of April. The proceeds of this sale will be used to purchase books and colouring pencils etc for the Ukrainian refugee children. By the time this comes around I will have finished a Mini MU leaflet which members can use to advertise Mini MU in their churches and also another MU leaflet which members might also like to take away and use to advertise MU.

If you feel like you would also like to join the steering group or would like to help at all with Mini MU please do not hesitate to contact me via email :- emilybrailsford@yahoo.co.uk
