The primary aim of the CIL is the spiritual welfare of the members of the Central Christadelphian community. In supporting and encouraging them this has benefits for the wider community in which they live in that the aim is to promote Christ-like behaviour towards all. Anyone who comes into contact with a Christadelphian and would like to learn more of their beliefs and is unable to attend a Christadelphian meeting place is eligible to receive the services of the CIL. The ones that are most suitable are first principle Bible studies, Sunday School lessons and, where appropriate, Braille material. ## **Available Services and Activities** The services offered include the following: - Regular Correspondence - Sunday School Lessons and Magazines - Weekly Exhortations - Monthly Lectures - Weekly Bible Study Papers - Braille Magazines, Books and Correspondence - CIL Magazine - **CIL** Meet – Online Meeting Service - Recordings Library The Secretary makes arrangements for any of these services to be provided on request and welcomes offers of help, particularly for the Correspondence Section and the Sunday School. The CIL is a society governed by a constitution and managed by a Committee whose details are listed on pages 23 and 24 of this report. The members of the Management Committee are elected each year by ecclesial representatives at the Annual General Meeting of the CIL. The Trustees are appointed by the Management Committee. page 2 page 3 CIL ANNUAL REPORT 2022 ACHIEVEMENTS & PERFORMANCE ## d. – aChievements and PeRfORmanCe Details of the activities of the Christadelphian Isolation League (CIL) for 2022 are contained in pages 4 to 12 of this report. ## **Introduction** – Philip Noakes You may not be at all surprised to realise that the work of the CIL is a weekon-week, month-on-month activity. Many willing Brothers and Sisters are eager to give spiritual support to any and all in isolation; compiling, producing and shipping monthly papers (140,000 pages/year), ensuring Sunday School lessons arrive on time, updating addresses, adding material to the website – and much more. Read on to see the Section Reports. One of the challenges of the year has been the difficulty in obtaining printing supplies (paper and toner), delaying at least one distribution deadline. Thankfully this year has also seen normality begin to return to our daily and ecclesial lives. An effect of the two pandemic years that has left its mark, is that in one sense all of us have experienced the challenge of enforced isolation, so the concern over the spiritual welfare of our Brothers and Sisters (and their families) has been brought more closely to our attention. The joy of meeting again in person has been a stimulus to think more carefully about those who are still isolated; an experience that has increased our appreciation of the value of CIL services to those in long term isolation from their Brothers and Sisters of like precious faith, for we all are, “ _waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Saviour Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself a people for his own possession who are zealous for good works_ ” (Titus 2:13,14). We thank all of you who continue to support the CIL with finances, your time given willingly, your prayers and encouragement – so that we may continue to support those in isolation, and their ecclesias. ## **Exhortation Section** – Roderick Titley The Apostle Paul when writing to the Brothers and Sisters at Corinth emphasises the importance of “ _… speaking unto men to edification and exhortation, and comfort_ ”. How important this advice is to us when we consider the devastating effect that the Covid epidemic, the war in Ukraine and now the beginning of a world recession has had on our lives. One of the most important aspects of our life in the Truth is remembering the Lord Jesus Christ in bread and wine, and particularly for those who find themselves in isolation. The Exhortation Section of the CIL endeavours to provide spiritual food every week to Brothers and Sisters in isolation, which includes many that are facing severe hardship, some even in fear for their lives. We are therefore indebted to those brethren who write words of exhortation and encouragement, providing thoughts on the daily readings every Sunday; not forgetting many who are involved in the process of translating, printing, addressing envelopes and distributing material. May the time soon come when the affairs of this world are swept aside and the knowledge of God’s glory shall fill the earth. ## **Bible Study Section** – Colin Walton The work of sourcing and distributing weekly Bible studies has continued during the past year. The programme is assembled from subjects that are offered randomly rather than imposing fixed themes or series. The programme organises this material to correspond with the Daily Reading Plan, where appropriate, and to give a reasonable balance between Old and New Testament subjects. Further contributors would always be welcome, so if you think you can help, please make contact. The study of scripture is of paramount importance if we are to emulate those Jews in Berea who “ _were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so_ ” (Acts 17:11). May the Lord continue to prosper this means of support for those unable to attend the weekly Bible Class, that they might be blessed with those who can. page 4 page 5 CIL ANNUAL REPORT 2022 ACHIEVEMENTS & PERFORMANCE ## **Lecture Section** – Vernon Davies This year the lecture theme has been, “The Master’s teaching – What did Jesus say …”, with the subjects varying from, “Seek first the Kingdom of God”, to, “He who believes and is baptised will be saved”. We would like to thank the twelve writers for all their time and study on the various subjects. I am sure the many recipients who receive these papers are grateful for these, particularly in difficult times which each one of us face at the moment. Some of the Brothers and Sisters in isolation are elderly and some do not have the modern technology, so they appreciate the written lectures each month. Brothers and Sisters in several countries throughout the world face many challenges in their day to day lives and their beliefs are tested on numerous occasions. Our thanks are due to the translators who continue to give their time translating these papers into foreign languages for the services we provide. The theme for 2023 is, “God has a plan for us”, with twelve subjects being prepared under this topic. Our prayers are with both CIL workers and recipients as we each wait for the coming of Jesus Christ and Gods’ Kingdom to be set up on the earth. ## **Sunday School** – Ann Harvey (Sunday School Secretary) Throughout the year our many dedicated teachers have continued instructing the students in the way which leads to life eternal. Despite the problems associated with sending post to many overseas countries, who have problems we cannot even begin to imagine, we are thankful for our Heavenly Father’s blessing on our work and the fruit it bears to His glory. We pray for our students who need our support and encouragement in these difficult days before our Lord’s return. Youth Week was held once again at Ringsfield Hall. The studies were led by Brother Simeon Guntrip on the theme, “The Judges of Israel”. Thirty-nine youngsters attended the week, ten of whom came for the first time. The week was a huge success with most of the youngsters saying that they wanted to come again and that it was a shame it only lasted a week. The number of students in the school is roughly the same as last year and during the course of the year we have heard of the baptism of one of our students in the UK. We thank our many teachers who continue their dedicated work in teaching the young in the Way of Life. ## **Braille Section** – Philip & Ruth Noakes The Braille Section publishes two magazines on an alternating bi-monthly cycle, making for six issues of each title in a year. Having two titles, _The Light_ and _Gleanings_ , enables a wider range of topics to be covered. Serialised books and articles are taken from _Glad Tidings_ , _The Christadelphian_ page 6 page 7 ACHIEVEMENTS & PERFORMANCE ## CIL ANNUAL REPORT 2022 magazine and from Christadelphian books to provide the readership with a comprehensive range of Biblical material. In _The Light,_ we have started, “Pilgrimage of Jesus”, Book 2, and from _Glad Tidings_ a series “The Reliability of the Gospels”. In _Gleanings_ “The Books of the Bible” ends this year and in 2023 will be followed with a selection of articles overviewing the whole Bible. The 2020 twelve-part CIL Lecture series ran during 2021/22 and finished in November. The magazines are printed at Scottish Braille Press, Edinburgh, a charitable business founded over 125 years ago that has a strong history and heritage in the production of Braille and other accessible formats, providing people with sight loss with equal access to the written word. We are very pleased with the quality of service they give us. Within our own resources we issue CIL Exhortations, Bible Studies and Lectures as well as the _Christadelphian Hymn Book_ in Braille, and also in large print editions for those with failing eyesight. If you know someone interested in the Bible who reads Braille, we can send _Gleanings_ to them – please ask. There is a Braille library kept at Olivet, Birmingham, UK (190 volumes). We responded to a request from the Louis Braille Memorial Library, Dhaka, Bangladesh to provide a complete copy of the _ESV Bible_ (34 volumes). The dependable work of all the team is greatly appreciated, although we rarely hear back from recipients, we are committed to providing these materials as a reliable source of encouragement in spiritual matters. ## **Braille Section Statistics** Braille material goes to 11 countries in Africa (Egypt, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Nigeria, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe) – 139 copies (Cameroon 11 copies – stopped due to war); 3 countries in Americas (Bahamas, Trinidad, USA) – 9 copies; 5 countries in other overseas countries (Bangladesh, Czech Republic, India, Malaysia, Sri Lanka) – 39 copies; United Kingdom (England only) – 3 copies. Print runs: _The Light_ – 199; _Gleanings_ – 207. Braille Section workers – 5. ## **Overseas & Correspondence Section** – Moya Southgate The correspondence section of the CIL has dwindled due to the fact that Brothers and Sisters are not being put forward for help in this way. Hopefully this means that many of them are being connected with and cared for by their ecclesia, or by their CBM teams. ## **CIL Magazine** – Richard Benson One issue of the magazine was produced and distributed in 2022, focused on the Letter to the Romans. We thank Brother Andy and Sister Sarah Joiner, who have helped in the compilation of the magazine for many years. They are stepping down, having served as editors in the past, and more recently as assistant editors. We welcome as new members to the editorial team, Sister Rebekah Dwyer (Walsall) and Brother Brett and Sister Morwenna Murphy (Camborne). ## **Recordings Library / Listening Panel** – Cedric Shearn 2022 was a very quiet year as regards loans and purchases of physical CDs and Tapes. There has continued to be good use of the recordings library online at https://www.isolationleague.org/recordings with over 1,500 downloads or plays per month. We have managed to recruit 8 new members for the Listening Panel so far who are busy helping us. We are still looking for additional members, but trying to keep them local to West Yorkshire to avoid postage charges and ease of exchange between listeners. As always we are on the lookout for suitable good quality recordings, cassette tapes, CD/DVD or audio and video files. Please contact us if you have any recordings that we could use! ## **Recordings Library Statistics for 2022** Downloads & Plays – 21,996 (up 4,207 from last year) Downloadable Files – 5,063 (up 136) page 8 page 9 CIL ANNUAL REPORT 2022 ACHIEVEMENTS & PERFORMANCE ## **Central Records** – Mark Webb The main work of the Central Records Section is to print labels for the distribution of various items of CIL material. These labels are obtained using the information stored in records in a computer database. The records stored are for those that receive the printed services of the League and those that work for the League. Most of the labels printed are for distribution of Lectures, Exhortations, and Bible Study papers in both English and Russian languages. Labels are printed for the material sent out directly from the UK by the distribution teams in South Wales. The records are updated three or four times a week from information that comes by letter, telephone and predominantly email. This resulted in around 170 changes being made during 2022. The number of recipients has fallen; this has been influenced by the Russian/ Ukraine war, and many that joined during the coronavirus pandemic being able to meet in person again or on-line, and others obtaining the services from the website. GDPR rules introduced in 2019 continue to govern the handling of CIL data. Since a large proportion of the League’s expenses is in postal charges, it is essential that any known changes for overseas addresses are reported as quickly as possible. Changes for UK addresses should be notified directly to the Central Records Section. Changes to Overseas addresses should be notified initially to the Overseas Correspondence Section, where they will be passed on to Central Records. Bible Studies: UK 130; O/seas 1,042 (inc. 241 Russian); Total 1,172 (p/w). Lectures: UK 73; O/seas 720; Total 793 (monthly). Number of workers: 240 (225 in UK; 15 overseas). ## **Website** – Matt Barton The CIL Website (https://www.isolationleague.org) has now been in operation for 15 years, providing a searchable library of our Exhortations, Lectures and Bible Studies going back 20 years (to 2002), which is kept up to date as our latest articles are produced. We also provide access to the Sunday School lessons, Magazine, Recordings Library, Christadelphian Hymn recordings by the Northern Christadelphian Choir, and to our online meeting platform CIL Meet. Access to the website is restricted to Brothers and Sisters as the facilities are provided as a service to ecclesias to support their members who are in isolation. We send out links to the latest material, the daily readings and links to exhortations that may relate to the daily readings on our social media channels and by email. During 2022 we migrated the CIL Recordings Library, the Hymns and other audio and media files used on the website to a new media hosting provider ( _Cloudflare_ ). The migration of 70GB of data (just under 8,000 files) was completed in August. This became necessary due to issues with the previous provider ( _DaCast_ ) which included reporting that it did not work all the time. Following the migration, new reporting tools have been implemented, but this means that for 2022, the statistics for the year in this report are approximate, based on part of the year. We also added videos of hymns, which include Farsi translations of the words, as well as the _PowerPoint_ attachment containing the words, where available. A huge thank you to the brethren who have provided these translations! Currently there are 119 hymns with translations available at https://www.isolationleague.org/hymns/list/farsi. 516 listeners| ## **Changes** – David Harvey We report the falling asleep of Brother Richard Austin on January 1[st] 2023. His work for the CIL began in the 1960s and continued until ill-health forced his retirement in 2019. Richard joined the Main Committee early in 1970 and soon after became Publicity Secretary. Later he became Assistant Secretary and then Secretary. He led the organisation of the regular Birmingham Gatherings, bringing many Brothers and Sisters together over the late May Bank Holiday weekend. In 2017 he stood down in order to advise the present Secretary in the role. Our brother now sleeps awaiting the resurrection. On behalf of the Committee — Brother David Harvey (Secretary) Report compiled by Brother Philip Noakes. ## **Total Expenditure** Total expenditure from these funds saw a rise of 16.5%, which was due to a variety of factors of which the additional funding for the youth week activities and the Dublin flat expenses were the most significant. ## **General Fund** The General fund is the fund through which all the regular services of the CIL are paid. The major costs remain postage, printing, stationery and costs associated with hosting virtual meetings. Due to the above factors, the fund showed a surplus of £8,256 compared to a deficit of £19,245 for 2021. ## **Legacy Fund** The Legacy Fund finances most of the costs associated with less regular expenditure of the CIL e.g. equipment purchases, pastoral visits, gatherings and Youth Week. Due to the fall in legacy donations, this year saw a reported deficit of £26,170 as opposed to a surplus of £2,669 in 2021. The Committee has continued their commitment to using these funds as best as they can to help those in Isolation. The Eire flat is funded through CALS and CIL donations along with collections and donations from the local area. This year saw a surplus of £2,553 for the period. ## **Total Balances** The total balances at the end of the year fell by £15,361 to £282,618. ## **Reserves Policy** The CIL does not have a formal reserves policy but the balances which are held in instant access accounts are such that they would meet the normal expenditure of the League for at least 12 months. page 13 page 12 INDEPENDENT EXAMINER’S REPORTACCOUNTS _CIL ANNUAL REPORT 2022_ The committee would like to thank all ecclesias and individuals who have supported the CIL so generously during the year. The Trustees declare that they have approved the enclosed Report. ## It is my responsibility to: - examine the accounts under section 43 of the Charities 1993 Act; - to follow the procedures laid down in the general Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 43(7)(b) of the 1993 Act; and On behalf of the Trustees, David Harvey (Secretary) 24 January 2023 - to state whether particular matters have come to my attention. ## **Basis of independent examiner’s report** My examination was carried out in accordance with the general Directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from you as trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a ‘true and fair view’ and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below. ## **Independent examiner’s statement** In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention: - (1) which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in any material respect the requirements: - to keep accounting records in accordance with section 41 of the 1993 Act; and ## **Independent Examiner’s Report to the Trustees of the Christadelphian Isolation League** I report on the accounts of the Christadelphian Isolation League for the year ended 31 December 2022, which are set out on pages 16 to 20. ## **Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner** The charity’s trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts. The charity’s trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year under section 43(2) of the Charities Act 1993 (the 1993 Act) and that an independent examination is needed. The charity is preparing accrued accounts and I am qualified to undertake the examination by being a qualified member of ACCA. - to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and comply with the accounting requirements of the 1993 Act have not been met; or - (2) to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached. Basis of Accounting** The financial statements have been prepared in accordance with Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2015) – (Charities SORP (FRS 102)), the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) and the Charities Act 2011. ## **Basis of preparation** The CIL meets the definition of a public benefit entity under FRS 102. Assets and liabilities are initially recognised at historical cost or transaction value unless otherwise stated in the relevant accounting policy notes. ## **2. Accounting Policies** **Income** – Voluntary income and donations are accounted for as received by the charity. Tax reclaims on donations are included at the same time as the gift to which they relate. Investment income (bank interest) is included in the accounts when receivable. **Expenditure** – All expenditure is recognised once there is a legal or constructive obligation to that expenditure, it is probable settlement is required and the amount can be measured reliably. All costs are allocated to the applicable expenditure heading those aggregate similar costs to that category. Where costs cannot be directly attributed to particular headings, they have been allocated on a basis consistent with the use of resources. **Assets** – All expenditure on equipment costing less than £1,000 is written off in the year of purchase. ## **3. New Exhortations and Studies are added weekly, and Lectures monthly. There are currently over 2,500 articles on the site. Sunday School lessons for Kindergarten, Infant and Junior grades are also available, as well as over 5,060 audio recordings as downloadable files. The site address is: https://www.isolationleague.org CIL Meet is our live streaming service provided for Christadelphian Organisations and Ecclesias, that enables streaming meetings and services online (with language translation) using Zoom, Google Meet and Microsoft Teams. Zoom, Google Meet and Teams accounts are provided with a simple mechanism on the IsolationLeague.org website to run meetings using these accounts. You can also use these accounts directly as well. In addition to the usual features found in those meeting apps (chat, screen sharing, whiteboards, virtual backgrounds, breakout rooms, _etc_ .), the following are available as part of CIL Meet: - Freephone dial-in for all meeting types - Simple access to a meeting using a portal & access key (CILMeet.me) - Easily manage who can administer, access and host your meetings - Use the same, easy to remember link for all your meetings - One-click streaming to YouTube (from Zoom only) These facilities are provided free of charge.
