ACHIEVEMENTS & PERFORMANCE
D. – ACHIEVEMENTS AND PERFORMANCE
Details of the activities of the Christadelphian Isolation League (CIL) for 2020 are contained in pages 4 to 12 of this report.
Introduction – Matt Barton
In my introduction to the 2019 report I commented on how difficult it must be for those in isolation, whether it is due to distance, ill health, or for any other reason, and made the remark, “Whilst most of us do not face the difficulties our Brothers and Sisters faced during the war eighty years ago, we are living in a world that is still very troubled”.
Whilst the Coronavirus pandemic has had a very different impact on us than the Second World War had on our brothers and sisters, we have all experienced isolation in some form this year and faced difficulties in meeting with one another on a regular basis that we could never have anticipated. Many of us have found the year 2020 to be extremely challenging. Being in Christ we have a hope that goes beyond the current crisis; we look forward to the time when God shall wipe away all tears from our eyes and “there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away” (Revelation 21:4). We must hold on to this hope no matter how difficult things get.
The work of the Isolation League continued in 2020, and we are thankful to our Father in heaven that we have been able to respond to the increased demand in our services. Weekly exhortations were emailed to all ecclesias to provide support during the initial impact of the virus in March and this continued through to September. We rapidly adapted our printing and distribution process so that it could continue and brothers and sisters in isolation continued to receive the support we provide, and our Youth Week switched to a virtual event.
Our hope and prayer is that the current crisis will end soon, and that the Isolation League may continue to provide support to those who need our services, until the Lord Jesus returns. “Now the Lord of peace himself give you peace always by all means. The Lord be with you all” (2 Thessalonians 3:16).
Exhortation Section – Roderick Titley
2020 has certainly been a calamitous year and as I write this report in October, it appears that the Covid-19 pandemic is by no means over. Yet the situation has not deterred those brethren who have contributed exhortations this year and to whom I am extremely grateful. Following the lockdown in March, we were sending out an additional 84 exhortations to brethren and sisters but

this has now reduced to 63 as ecclesias have gone on line for their meetings.
Exhortations continue to be sent both to brethren and sisters abroad as well as in the UK. In addition, we have been sending exhortations to ecclesias via email so that they can be read online or printed off for those not having access to a computer. However, this stopped in September as it was felt that most meetings had some form of online meeting facility in place.
My thanks also go to all those
behind the scenes who continue to support the work of the Exhortation Section of the CIL. This year has emphasised the importance of regularly ‘feeding’ on God’s word as we see world events bringing the return of the Lord Jesus Christ ever closer. “Even so come Lord Jesus”.
Bible Study Section – Colin Walton
Once again, the support of many contributing Brothers is gratefully acknowledged. The need for forward planning means that commitments are often made a year or so before the required date, and of course personal circumstances can change in that time, particularly in this year of the COVID19 pandemic. However, only very rarely has a Brother been unable to meet his undertaking.
The Bible Study Section began in 1940, and in 80 years well over 4,000 studies have been produced. No particular themes have been adopted this year but a good balance has been obtained simply by accepting offered subjects. This is demonstrated by the following analysis of studies:
Old Testament (23);
New Testament (24); General (5).
Overall, it is the intention to provide studies with a maturity and depth that will help us all grow in knowledge of the Holy Scriptures, which alone are able to make us “wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus”. May our Heavenly Father continue to bless this valuable work.

ACHIEVEMENTS & PERFORMANCE
Lecture Section – Vernon Davies
This year (2020) the lecture theme has been “The call of the gospel – A call to us”, with the subjects varying from “What is the gospel? in January and “The call to know God” in February, to “The call to us” in November and “How the call of the gospel brought me to Jesus” in December.
We would like to thank the 12 writers for all their time and study on the various subjects. I am sure that the many recipients who receive these papers are grateful too, particularly during this difficult time when many brethren and sisters find themselves in isolation, or are elderly and without the modern technology and so find these papers of great value. We think of the many brethren and sisters in the various countries of the world, who are finding their beliefs being challenged on a daily basis. Our prayers are with them in these times when the virus is so prevalent in our world today.
The theme for 2021 is “Do you know what the Bible says about …”. We thank all those Brothers and Sisters involved with the work of the League and we pray for God’s blessing on this work. We also pray for the return of Jesus Christ to set up God’s kingdom, when all that is wrong in this world will be put to right. May this come soon.
Sunday School – Ann Harvey (Sunday School Secretary)
This year due to the Covid-19 pandemic we were unable to meet together for Youth Week. However, we held a pared down online Youth Week via Zoom. Each morning Brother Simeon Guntrip (Sale) led a study on the theme “Aspects of God’s Kingdom”. Games, quizzes and other activities were held in the afternoon and the youngsters had an opportunity at the end of each session to chat amongst themselves in breakout groups. 33 youngsters took part in the sessions and enjoyed their time together in unusual circumstances.
Numbers in the school are roughly the same as last year. Worldwide lockdown restrictions impacted heavily on international mail which meant that no lessons were sent to overseas students for a few months. These have now been resumed to all our students.
We thank our many teachers who continue their dedicated work in teaching the young in the Way of Life. During the course of the year, we have once

The Braille Section publishes two magazines on an alternating bi-monthly cycle making for six issues of each title in a year. Having two titles, The Light and Gleanings , enables a wider range of topics to be covered and one selection of very short articles runs in both titles. Serialised books and articles are taken from Glad Tidings , The Christadelphian magazine and

Braille material goes to 10 countries in Africa (Cameroon, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Nigeria, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe) – 129 copies (Cameroon stopped due to war);
3 countries in Americas (Bahamas, Trinidad, USA) – 9 copies;
8 countries in other overseas countries (Australia, Bangladesh, Czech Republic, Egypt, India, Malaysia, Russian Federation, Sri Lanka) – 45 copies; United Kingdom (England only) – 4 copies.

from Christadelphian books to provide the readership with a comprehensive range of Biblical material.
Two new series have started this year: Paul – the Apostle by Grace , Brother John Mitchell and Elijah the Tishbite , Brother Anthony Oosthuizen ( The Christadelphian 2019-20).
The magazines are printed at Scottish Braille Press, Edinburgh, a charitable business founded over 125 years ago that has a strong history and heritage in the production of braille and other accessible formats, providing people with sight loss with equal access to the written word. We are very pleased with the quality of service they give us.
Within our own resources we issue CIL Exhortations, Bible Studies and Lectures as well as the Christadelphian Hymn Book in Braille, and also in large print editions for those with failing eyesight.
There is a Braille library kept at Olivet, Birmingham, UK (190 volumes) and at the School for Blind and Handicapped, Mbengwi, Cameroon.
Overseas & Correspondence Section – Moya Southgate
This section of the CIL has had a quiet year. There are very few new requests from CBM linkmen for correspondents to keep in touch with Brothers and Sisters in other countries. Maybe the use and availability of modern technology lessens the need today. The French translation of exhortations and lectures continues to be a valuable addition to our resources and we thank those who help to produce these week by week.
CIL Magazine – Richard Benson
Due to some production issues arising from the pandemic, only two issues of the magazine were published in 2020, rather than the usual three. This has also necessitated some changes in distribution – the magazine is now sent electronically to ecclesial secretaries, with paper copies being sent to usual recipients of CIL materials. Current and past issues can also be downloaded from the website: www.isolationleague.org/magazine. As in previous years,
we have dedicated part of each issue to a theme; this year, these were “Read, Mark and Learn” (the Gospel of Mark) and “Listen!” (considering our need to be willing listeners to God’s word as well as sensitive listeners to one another). Thank you to those who have written articles, or given permission for us to reprint articles published elsewhere.
Recordings Library – Cedric Shearn
2020 has been a steady year with CD’s (Loans and Purchases) being the main items requested. From March (the beginning of lockdown) the requests increased mainly for Memorial Services, usually for elderly Brothers and Sisters who cannot access the internet to join their Ecclesia’s live stream. As always we aim to steadily increase the recordings we hold but due to the Covid 19 this has not happened this year.

Online Downloads & Plays – 9,028 (up 3,431 from last year) Tapes Loaned – 12; Tapes Sold – 0 CDs Loaned – 68; CDs Sold – 74
Listening Panel – David & Helen Tanner
The panel has been at work as usual in the background of the Library. 66 talks have been reviewed with 33 accepted for inclusion and 27 rejected for various reasons. We thank all those who have contributed tapes/CDs to the Listening Panel in the past and also to the various Brothers and Sisters who have spent time in processing them.
After 12 years we are to stand down as the coordinators of the Listening Panel, a time we have enjoyed. We thank all past and present Listeners for their enthusiasm.
NB. If you have suitable talks that you think would benefit other Brothers and Sisters, please contact the Recordings Librarians, who will be pleased to discuss them with you until other arrangements can be made.
Central Records – Mark Webb
The main work of the Central Records Section is to print labels for the distribution of various items of CIL material. These labels are obtained using the information stored in records in a computer database. The records stored are for those that receive the service of the League and those that work for the League.
page 8
page 9
CIL ANNUAL REPORT 2020
ACHIEVEMENTS & PERFORMANCE
Most of the labels printed are for distribution of Lectures, Exhortations, and Bible Study papers. Pre-coronavirus pandemic, labels were printed for three teams who collated and mailed out the CIL material. However, when lockdown came this arrangement was unable to continue and Sister Rebekah Fifield took on the responsibility. In addition, labels for sending out the CIL Magazine are printed as required. About 25,000 labels are printed during the year for material to be sent out directly from the UK.
The records are updated three or four times a week from information that comes by letter, telephone and email. This resulted in around 450 changes being made during 2020 of which there were over 80 new requests for Exhortations from brethren and sisters who were unable to join a meeting via the internet after lockdown. GDPR rules introduced in 2019 continue to govern the handling of CIL data.
Since a large proportion of the League’s expenses are in postal charges, it is essential that any known changes for overseas addresses are reported as quickly as possible. Changes for UK addresses should be notified directly to the Central Records Section. Changes to Overseas addresses should be notified initially to the Overseas Correspondence Section, where they will be passed on to Central Records and changes for Braille recipients to the Braille Section.

Our new CIL Meet video conferencing / live stream service called CIL Meet saw huge growth in 2020, and we were able to add additional features such as YouTube rebroadcasting, Free Phone dial in and Google Meet integration. This service is provided free of charge to the Brotherhood and will continue to be developed during 2021, God Willing.
In April, to support services being run on virtual platforms, we worked with the Christadelphian Northern Choirs, and the CMPA to make recordings of the Hymns available on the website. We have seen a huge number of downloads of the Hymn recordings (54,911 for the year from April). We are now updating the website to make the words of the hymns available, and uploading videos of the hymns that include the words. In addition to this recordings of accompaniments and voluntaries are being uploaded. We are hoping to complete this work early in 2021. This has been a real blessing to individuals and ecclesias in isolation this year, and you can find these recordings here: https://www.isolationleague.org/hymns
We continue to send weekly emails with the latest CIL Exhortations, Bible Studies and Lectures to those who sign up for the notifications on the website, along with the daily readings and exhortations that relate to the daily readings.
Overseas papers being collected.

Changes – David Harvey
There have been no changes to the Committee during 2020 and we would like to take the opportunity to thank everyone who has helped in the work in whatever way.
On behalf of the Committee
David Harvey (Secretary)
Report compiled by Brother Matt Barton
Total income fell by almost £60,000 in the year due to large legacies in 2019 totalling £82,000.
Total Expenditure
Total expenditure from these funds saw a fall of 10%, which was due to a variety of factors of which the change in how we support the CBM was the most significant.
General Fund
The General fund is the fund through which all the regular services of the CIL are paid. The major costs remain postage, printing and stationary. There was also a large increase in costs due to hosting a virtual service platform for members across the world. Due to the fall in donations in the year, the deficit increased slightly from £16,846 in 2019 to a deficit of £18,840 for the year for the General Fund.
Legacy Fund
The Legacy Fund finances most of the costs associated with less regular expenditure of the CIL e.g. equipment purchases, pastoral visits, gatherings and Youth Week. Due to the fall in legacy donations, this year saw a reported deficit of £3,838 as opposed to a surplus of £53,712 in 2019. The Committee has continued their commitment to using these funds as best as they can to help those in Isolation.
The Eire flat is funded through CALS and CIL donations along with collections and donations from the local area. This year saw a surplus of £3,042 for the period.
An amount of £932 has been re-allocated from the D.E.A.F. fund to general funds as the money has been unused in over 10 years.
Total Balances
The total balances at the end of the year fell by £20,617 to £310,953.

INDEPENDENT EXAMINER’S REPORTACCOUNTS
CIL ANNUAL REPORT 2020
Reserves Policy
The CIL does not have a formal reserves policy but the balances which are held in instant access accounts are such that they would meet the normal expenditure of the League for at least 12 months.
The committee would like to thank all ecclesias and individuals who have supported the CIL so generously during the year.
The Trustees declare that they have approved the enclosed Report.
On behalf of the Trustees,
David Harvey (Secretary)
18 January 2021
It is my responsibility to:
-
examine the accounts under section 43 of the Charities 1993 Act;
-
to follow the procedures laid down in the general Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 43(7)(b) of the 1993 Act; and
-
to state whether particular matters have come to my attention.
Basis of independent examiner’s report
My examination was carried out in accordance with the general Directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from you as trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a ‘true and fair view’ and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below.
Independent examiner’s statement
In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention:
-
(1) which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in any material respect the requirements:
-
to keep accounting records in accordance with section 41 of the 1993 Act; and

I report on the accounts of the Christadelphian Isolation League for the year ended 31 December 2020, which are set out on pages 16 to 20.
Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner
The charity’s trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts. The charity’s trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year under section 43(2) of the Charities Act 1993 (the 1993 Act) and that an independent examination is needed. The charity is preparing accrued accounts and I am qualified to undertake the examination by being a qualified member of ACCA. page 14

CIL ANNUAL REPORT 2020
SECTION C. – NOTES TO THE ACCOUNTS
1. Basis of Accounting
The financial statements have been prepared in accordance with Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2015) – (Charities SORP (FRS 102)), the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) and the Charities Act 2011.
Basis of preparation
The CIL meets the definition of a public benefit entity under FRS 102. Assets and liabilities are initially recognised at historical cost or transaction value unless otherwise stated in the relevant accounting policy notes.
2. Accounting Policies
Income – Voluntary income and donations are accounted for as received by the charity. Tax reclaims on donations are included at the same time as the gift to which they relate. Investment income (bank interest) is included in the accounts when receivable.
Expenditure – All expenditure is recognised once there is a legal or constructive obligation to that expenditure, it is probable settlement is required and the amount can be measured reliably. All costs are allocated to the applicable expenditure heading that aggregate similar costs to that category. Where costs cannot be directly attributed to particular headings they have been allocated on a basis consistent with the use of resources.
Assets – All expenditure on equipment costing less than £1,000 is written off in the year of purchase.
