Report of the Council of Management for the Year ended 31 December 2025
Your Council is pleased to present their report with the financial statements of the company for the year
ended 31 December 202S. The financial 5raremencs comply with the Companies Att 2006, The Charities Att
2011 and the Statement of Recommended Practice, Accounting and Reporting by Charities (Effective l January
2015).
Charitable Obje<tives
The Memorandum and Ar£icles of Association sets out the charitable objettives for which The Sussex Cattle
Society is estab115hed. They can be summarised a5 follow5- To maintain the purity and improve the breed.
Policies to Achieve the Objectives
The Council of The Su55ex Cattle Society uses two main initiatives to pursue the main objecttves..
i. The publication of The Sussex Herd book The book is published annually and Volume 129 was
published in 2025.
2. Promoting the breed by exhibiting at various 5how5 and events and advertising.
Organisation of the Charity
The Chariry is organised a5 set out in the Memorandum and Articles of Association. The control of its
aff2irs is in the hands of a Council and Member5 of Council are appointed in accordance with the term5 of
the Memorandum and Article5 of Association. Miss Kennedy, Secretary, being the only person on the
payroll. carries out the day-to-day running of the Chariry.
During the year Council investigated the ongoing day to day administration of the Charity for the future
taking into account the Secrerary'5 retirement in 2026. Following careful consideraiion of the available
option5 and financial implications it was agreed by Council that Pedigree Livestock Service5 will take over
the daily administration of the Chari¢y maintaining the records and activities of the Society.
Review of 2025
Flnances:
The Society ¢oncinues to remxin stable with genernl administration costs kept to a minimum. Fees will
genernlly be increased annually in line with inflation dependent on the Society's financial $￿tUS. The Society's
monetary assets are now all invested in COIF Charity Investments as appropriats. Sufficient assets are held
to maincain the Society for several years and to publish the Herd Book 2nd promote the breed. it is felt that
plentiful reserves should be maintxined to re-establish the breed rf there should be a significant loss of
breeding cattle outside the Society's control. The Council continually assesse5 the financial staru5 Qf the
Society and strives co ensure that the promotions and PLEblicity levels are maintained or increased.
Membership:
At the end of the year there were 132 fLtII, 30 associats and 23 life and honorary members.
Herds:
During the year I I new breeders joined the Society. Changes of Ownerships were made, the majority to
recently established herds. It is pleasing to note that new herd5 being established tend to have greater herd
sizes than those being dispersed. The national herd of registered Sussex Cattle is now in exce55 of 2,500
breeding cow5. With Ihe rhumber of female registrations per annum being in excess of twelve hundred.
The registration darabase "8reed Matters" has continued to improve the proces5 of registrntions as
breeders are able to make birth return5 online via the Society's website or direcdy from those with Farm
Mitters fami management programme.

a meeting immediately following the Annual General Meeting, Mr J Ham)er was elected Chaimian and Mr D
Spanton elected Vice Chairman. The Council continued to meet throughout the year in person and via Zoom.
Reserves Policy.
It 15 the policy of the charity to maintain unrestricted funds. which are the free reserves of the chariry. at a
level that equates to approximately one year of unrestricted expenditure. This ought to provide sufficient
nd5 to cover the day-to-day running costs in addition to ensuring the publication of the herd book in
progress.
Breed Promotion:
Th55 year the Sociery had a promotional stsnd at Heathfield, South of England, Kent and Edenbridge shows.
Literature and infomiation was Sent in response to enquiries by telephone and email throughout the year.
The website 15 updated as required. A presente is maintained on Facebook. A Breeders, Directory was
produced. Additionally the￿ was advertising in the farniing press as part of an ongoing campaign to promote
the breed. The Breed Sale online was advertlsed irh the farming press. The Bull Sale Catalogue on the web51te
has continued giving an online presence for breeders to market bulls privately. Female5 for sale are also listsd
on the website.
Risk Management
The Council has examined the major strategic. business and operational risks which the Charity faces and
confimis that systems have been established to enable regular report5 to be produced so that the necessary
steps can be taken to lessen rhese risks. Generally the greatest risk to which the Society is exposed 15 beyond

Public Benefit:
The directors. xs trustees of the company have complied with the duty in section 1715) of the Charities Att
201 I to have regard to the public benefit guidance published by the Charity Commission. To this end the
Society made informaiion on the breed. its history and its place in modern agriculture freely available to the
genernl public through postal, online and telephone queries, in addition to the website and at various events
during the year. Additionally. the Society had infom)ation stands including live examples of the breed at
educational events at South of England Showground where several thousand children had the opportunity to
be given informauon and ro ask que5uons. Free infomation packs were also sent to any students maknng
enquiries. The Society continues to ensure that the appropriate organisxtions are also aware of using the
breed as a contributor to the maintenance of environmentslly sensitive areas. A publication is also available
to give guidance on the management of the breed, exhibiting and breeding prnctice in addition to providing
local instructional sessions as requested. The web55te now includes a section on the purchase and cooking of
beef for the consumer in addition to a list of outlets where Sussex beef may be purchased direct from the
producers. Training and information days will continue to be held offering advice and instruction on the breed
and way5 in which the breed can be advanced. The Society will continue to strongly promote the use of data

'Sussex Catde Next Generation" are holding meetings and training ever￿.
