## **THE GREAT MEETING UNITARIAN CHAPEL HINCKLEY**

## **REPORT OF THE TRUSTEES FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 MARCH 2021**

## **Summary of the main activities undertaken in relation to the objects of the charity**

The Trustees are an independent body working in conjunction with the Chapel Committee and the Minister. Their

responsibilities include the upkeep and the improvement of the Chapel premises, the support of the ministry and the regulating and maintenance of funds and investments.

## **Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year and future aims**

Due to the National Restrictions, because of the Covid 19 Pandemic, the Trustees have not been able to hold their normal quarterly meetings but have kept in touch by email and telephone, in order to ensure that the usual business, and any exceptional matters, have been dealt with.

A major concern was the discovery, in September, of rainwater getting into the upper schoolroom. This was especially disappointing after the extensive refurbishment of the roofs and gullies that was carried out by Bonsers in late 2019. Bonsers worked with the Trustees to find the source of this leak, making at least five visits to modify suspected areas until the leak was finally cured at the beginning of December.

The Trustees, in agreement with the Chapel Committee, have for the time being suspended grants to the Chapel Account, which were made to assist with ministerial expenses. These grants will resume as and when they are required again.

## **Financial Review**

The statement of financial activities shows a drop in overall income for the year of around 22%, mainly due to the lower investment dividends, reduced bank interest and the lack of activity within the Chapel. Some of this is offset by reduced expenditure due also to the lack of activity and by the fact that there have been no major projects during this year. The Chapel Account was the worst hit but managed to end the year with only a 4% reduction in its total funds.

Surprisingly, during this period, the ‘market value’ of our combined investments rose by nearly 30%, resulting in an overall increase of our ‘total assets’ of 23%.

The Trustees are confident that they have sufficient funds available for future projects and further investment to offset inflation whilst maintaining sufficient reserves.

## **Policy on Reserves**

The Trustees, whilst not having a formal reserves policy, are aware of the need to have available sufficient income and funds to finance the Charity adequately for the foreseeable future.

## **Public Benefit**

The Trustees have noted the advice provided by the Charities Commission with regard to the need for religious charities to exhibit a recognition of the public good, to which they ought to contribute. They consider that the support of the Great Meeting Chapel as a moral force near the centre of Hinckley, open to all for religious services, supporting the institute of marriage and as a meeting place for many community based activities, accords with their responsibilities in that regard.

## **I declare, in my capacity as Charity Trustee that:**

- the Trustees have approved the report above

- have authorised me to sign it on their behalf

G H Oliver

Trustee Secretary

## **REPORT BY THE CHAPEL CHAIRPERSON FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 MARCH 2021**

At the end of last year's report I referred briefly to the arrival of the pandemic and the closure of the chapel and all its activities. Little did we realise then that this situation would still be affecting us a year later. The last service was held on 15 March 2020. It wasn't until the autumn that the committee started to discuss the possibility of resuming services at the chapel. In conjunction with the trustees, a risk assessment was carried out and PPE and other materials were obtained to comply with government regulations. A service planned for November had to be cancelled because of further restrictions, but a service was able to take place on 20 December with a Christmas theme. Since then we have managed to arrange a service on the third Sunday of each month, which has worked well. We have followed all the guidelines with regard to social distancing, mask-wearing etc. in chapel, and it was always appreciated that not all members would wish to attend until they felt able and safe to do so. Nevertheless it was good to be back in chapel after such a long absence, and see familiar faces. On the Sundays when we were not meeting, some members tuned in to online services from other chapels held by Zoom, especially from Mansfield, where the Rev Maria Pap always gave us a warm welcome. A District meeting took place online in October 2020 with the GA Chief Officer as guest speaker.

Although the chapel committee has not been able to meet in person during the year, we have kept in touch by phone and email, to discuss items of business as necessary. We were able to send a good donation to the West Leicestershire Community First Responders, which had been our charity for January to March 2020. Subsequent donations were also sent to the other charities that we had already chosen for the year: the Send a Child to Hucklow Fund, Hinckley Homeless Group (Lawrence House) and Leicester Hospitals Charity (Renal Fund). We believe it is important to support local and national charities where we are able. We are grateful to Christine Everton for her continuing work as chapel treasurer. Our indefatigable secretary, Eric Oliver, continued to prepare the monthly calendar (a very important means of communication for members), using most attractive photographs on the cover. He also made sure that the chapel was ready and safe when monthly services resumed. We are very grateful to him for all his work, and to Roger Oxley for keeping the grounds tidy, to Margaret Horton for sending out The Inquirer and to all the other volunteers who put so much time in to keep the chapel going. During the year we did receive one enquiry from an experienced minister about the vacant pulpit, and the Search Committee followed this up diligently. However, while discussions were continuing he informed us that he had decided to accept another appointment.

Very sadly a number of members and friends have died during the year: Pat Tyrrell on 8 April, Robert Hodges on 11 April, George Hoult on 21 May, Freda Grayson on 16 September, Jose McCulloch on 6 December and David Russell on 20 January 2021. Funeral services for Freda, Jose and David took place at the chapel observing Covid guidelines. A wedding was able to take place on 24 October 2020, conducted by Dr Jane Russell. For obvious reasons the September heritage events were not able to take place. Nevertheless Mike Everton was able to put together an excellent presentation entitled 'Connections: the Atkins Family and the Great Meeting Chapel' which will be found on the Atkins Building website: www.atkinsbuilding.co.uk/gallery/exhibition/robert-atkins-story - much of this material came from the chapel archives. There are photos of members of the Atkins family, of their memorials in chapel and other items relating to the history of the chapel. In November 2022 we will mark three hundred years since the opening of our wonderful old building. Clearly this has been a very difficult year for all of us, and we hope it is not too long before normal activities can resume. Perhaps one trend that may continue after the pandemic is the use of online worship to reach people in different ways, and I think this is something that we should be aware of for the future.

Mr Howard Hague, Chapel Chairperson
