Trustees' Annual Report

for the year ended 31 March 2022

St John's Congregational Church

Bensham Manor Road, Thornton Heath, Surrey CR7 7AG Registered charity number 235521

Trustees

The charity trustees who were listed on the Charity Commission website were as follows:

Mr Philip Gilbert Channon Mrs Gloria Lulalee Day Mr John Desmond Glenney Miss Sonja Elaine Reid Mrs Auleen Peta Timms Mrs Etta Wagstaffe

Miss Sonja Elaine Reid and The EFCC Trust Corporation Limited were the only active trustees during the year. The latter is the custodian trustee for the charity’s properties.

The church’s minister, Reverend William Edward Calder, retired at Easter 2021. The church is thankful to God for his long service.

Structure, governance and management

The charity is constituted as a charitable trust. Its governing document is the trust deed.

Objectives and activities

The objects of the charity set out in its governing document are to proclaim the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ and to build his church in our community.

The church is affiliated to the Evangelical Fellowship of Congregational Churches, and works in the community of Thornton Heath with activities such as youth work and pastoral care.

The trustees have had regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit.

Achievements and performance

During the year, the church has been meeting the spiritual needs of the people of Thornton Heath through declaring the gospel, as well as providing practical help and support. We hold two weekly services, Sunday and Thursday evening prayer meeting, which are broadcast on Zoom for those not able to attend. In October 22 we held our post pandemic Harvest Festival supper, to which those who attend St John’s invite friends and family for a shared meal. Our popular Carols by Candlelight was held on 18.12.22 and Christmas Day service on Sunday 25.12.22. We continue to work together as a congregation while we search for a new Minister.

1

The church is grateful to its volunteers and visiting speakers who have continued to provide its weekly ministry.

Financial review

The church recorded net receipts of over £36,000 in the year ended March 2022, bringing reserves to over £146,000.

This includes a restricted fund of £575 for the Junior Church.

The charity aims to hold financial reserves sufficient to cover foreseeable repairs that may be required on its premises. The trustees consider that the current level of reserves is adequate for this purpose. The church is continuing to send regular financial support to another congregation.

Declaration

The trustees declare that they have approved the trustees’ report above.
