Until the mid 20th century, having freedom to wander to the lower moorland slopes and quiet country lanes was an important part of year-round grazing of Dartmoor. An exceptionally hot summer followed a dry spring and the grass struggled to grow as temperatures soared to record levels and rainfall was minimal. Many calls came in from people concerned that livestock was without access to water because usual watering places were dry. We checked and confirmed that animals were seeking out alternative supplies within close proximity. There is good reason why words such as rivers, bogs, leats and springs are synonymous with Dartmoor. There is always water to be found somewhere, even in the driest conditions. But on some enclosed commons water was scarce and graziers moved stock to avoid problems. This summer, in the searing heat of midday, animals found shade wherever they could, against walls and boulders and under spreading hawthorn trees and gorse bushes. They wandered to higher ground to catch a breeze and where there were fewer flies. We continually checked on the stock as we crossed the moor responding to routine calls and emergencies. Back in the day when some commons on Dartmoor were enclosed, animals leared there lost the freedom to roam. It puts them at risk in times of extreme weather conditions. Their instincts for self-preservation have always been to find water, www.dlps.org.uk | 07873 587561 | 3 ## **DOG ATTACKS ON SHEEP** Dog attacks on sheep are deplorable and in most cases avoidable; the result of human failure. A failure to train a dog and a failure to keep an unreliable dog on a lead. The result is that many timid and gentle sheep, peacefully grazing the moor with no defences against predators other than flight, are chased, cornered, savaged and die a horrible death. Nine times out of ten, the dogs responsible for this brutality are domestic pets that when at home sleep on their owners’ bed, roll over for tummy rubs and beg for treats, but when allowed the freedom of the moor quickly revert to the instincts of their wild ancestors. Detailed information on this gruesome event is now in the hands of the police. A prosecution is likely to follow together with a demand for monetary compensation running into several thousand pounds. The above is just one of the 87 dog attacks we have recorded to 25th September this year. As in the above case, one attack may involve several deaths. In an attack near Widecombe the whole flock received numerous bites and 32 sheep had to be euthanised. Dog attacks in the area of Roborough Down are a regular occurrence, particularly near Long Ash and Double Waters, Grenofen and Magpie Bridge. Karla has been able to obtain monetary compensation from dog owners for several of the commoners and in two instances owners took the decision to euthanise their own dogs. In many cases Karla has also gathered sufficient information to hand to the police for further action, such as the issuing of dog control orders. Owners must be mindful of their legal responsibility to prevent dogs running outof-control amongst livestock. The most serious attack on sheep this year involved two dogs terrorising a flock, resulting in 14 deaths. Karla was met by the sickening sight of a field full of dead, dying and terrified sheep. The farmer had managed to catch the mud and blood covered dogs and had bundled them into his vehicle to await the owner’s arrival. It transpired that the dogs had gone missing at 1.30 pm from the Pew Tor area and were still at large at 7.30 pm when by chance the farmer witnessed the mayhem and carnage taking place. 4 ## **LAME SHEEP AND TRAPPED SHEEP** It has been a year with many lame sheep, the principal causes being foot rot and tick pyaemia. We have also seen collapsed sheep suffering louping ill (a tick-borne viral disease of the central nervous system, primarily affecting sheep but also cattle among others). Fly strike has been rife, with maggots invading the slightest sore or cut. Karla’s phone rings constantly about these problems as well as with requests to help sheep trapped in deep holes, behind wire, under gates and similar. With a fast response, the majority of these can be saved. Dead sheep on verges are the gruesome consequence of roads without fences. The 85 sheep hit by vehicles (recorded to 25th September) had little chance of survival. Only 6 survived out of the 85. Only a few limp away, alive though injured. Karla’s records help the police to appreciate the seriousness of the problem and to take action with speed traps and speed awareness projects whenever time and money allow. We would be delighted to see average speed cameras installed on appropriate roads to convey the message that Dartmoor cannot be used as a race track and that offenders will be caught. Unbelievably, on occasions a pony has been hit and killed and left lying in the middle of the carriage with the motorist driving on. ## **PONIES** There are many dangers for ponies on the moor, apart from road traffic accidents. The granite bridges spanning leats easily trap a pony’s leg. Karla attended two incidents when legs were broken as a result. A mare became wedged between boulders near the top of a tor and died a lingering death. Regrettably, no one saw her in time. In the spring Karla was called to several mares with foaling difficulties. Although foals rarely survive a difficult birth, the mares often can be saved. We did not interfere when a mare with dead twin foals stood over them for several hours, despite this being in a very public area of the moor www.dlps.org.uk | 07873 587561 | 9 and arousing much disquiet from people demanding the foals’ immediate removal. It was, they claimed, an offensive and upsetting sight. However, to remove the foals would not have been right nor kind to the mare. She would have galloped around in a distressed state searching for them and since this occurred beside a road she could well have become another RTA statistic. As it was, eventually the mare accepted her foals were not alive and after six hours she moved away and rejoined the herd. Several ponies were seen with wounds that had potential to become fly blown. Where we were able to get near enough we sprayed up with terramycin. The injuries were likely to have been stallion bites or kicks, or glancing blows from a collision with a vehicle. A foal near Haytor suffered a severe injury to its leg after being caught in a cattle grid. An area of cannon bone was exposed. This is being closely monitored. We are hopeful it will heal by granulation, as did a similar injury to a mare some years ago. For the third year running we are reporting STRANGLES this summer on a common near Chagford and on private land at Widecombe and Princetown. We have been closely monitoring the ponies at Chagford. One of the mares in particular lost a lot of condition because of the infection, but all the mares and foals have survived, unlike last year at Haytor. 10 ## **CATTLE** Several cows lost their calves in difficult calvings, but thankfully Karla was able to identify the owners and obtain help to ensure the cows at least were saved. A young calf was seen on its own and Karla was contacted. She established ownership and the calf was taken back to the farm and successfully introduced to being hand reared. So too a young Belted Galloway that experienced its first journey in the back of a trailer. Another life saved. Karla received information about a cow unable to clamber out of a leat. The owner attended and with assistance the cow was removed from the leat, though unsteady in her movements and probably affected by louping ill. She will be closely monitored. Karla’s knowledge of cattle and their owners came in useful for the police when they were called to take charge of cattle on the A386. Once in contact with Karla, she was able to direct them to the right farmer who got them back in their field. The B3212 Dousland to Princetown is a treacherous stretch of road for animals because many drivers use it as a race track and cattle, ponies and sheep pay with their lives. One evening an Asda van hit a cow, breaking both hind legs. The extensive damage to the van tells its own story about speed. And very shortly afterwards, just half a mile along the road, a calf was hit and also suffered a broken leg. The following day, when the farmer was checking the rest of his herd, he found yet another calf with a swinging leg. These appalling livestock collisions are a massive blow to the grazier who is seeing his livestock knocked down like nine pins. www.dlps.org.uk | 07873 587561 | 11 ## **AND ALSO** During the year, several worried owners have notified us about losing their dogs on the moor. Frantic phone calls and desperate searches have ended with most owners and their dogs being reunited. When appropriate we let commoners know of dogs on the loose in their area. Lisa, our hard-working committee member, was out riding to check on a sheep reportedly hobbling on three legs. Her horse, Nemo, slipped on a rushy area of ground and Lisa was trapped as they hit the deck together. Nemo quickly regained his feet but Lisa was not so lucky. Lying on an isolated area of moorland and unable to stand, Lisa used her mobile phone to call for help and gave her precise location by using what3words. Those three words led Lisa’s friends, family and the paramedics straight to her, hidden though she was by gorse and bracken. The x-ray shows the severe break to her leg. After an operation to fit two plates held by numerous screws, Lisa, like the sheep, is now hobbling along. We wish her a speedy recovery. An increasing number of people are using what3words when they phone Karla with an animal’s location. It is such a useful tool and helps us enormously. If you are able to download the what3words app onto your phone, then when standing by the injured animal it will record your location in the form of three random words. This gives Karla a 3 metre square location, which is far better than a grid reference giving a 100 metre square location. ## **TWINKLE** Twinkle is another pony saved by DLPS as an orphan foal when her mother was killed in a road traffic accident. Thank You **FAYE AND JESTER** For many years Kerry Belsham has provided a loving home for Faye and Jester, two orphan foals taken off the moor in spring 1997. Faye was found by the Army wandering entirely on her own and following children on the Ten Tors Expedition. No other ponies were anywhere to be seen. She was only a few days old. Jester was discovered standing by his mother. She had become caught by her legs in rocks and so badly injured she could not be saved. Jester went on to live 23 years with Kerry before the difficult decision was made to say goodbye. This year in early summer another difficult decision had to be made, this time about Faye because of various problems affecting her quality of life.
