Friends of the Edward Hain Centre

Registered Charity no 225835

Annual Report for 2024

The Friends of the Edward Hain Centre is a charity which exists to support the work of the Edward Hain Centre in St Ives, Cornwall.

Governance:

The Friends of the Edward Hain Centre is Charitable Company registered with the Charity Commission (no. 225835). As it is an unincorporated body it does not have to register with Companies House.

The charity is governed by a constitution. There have been several changes in the constitution since the founding of the charity and the current governing document is the constitution of 10[th] January 2024.

The charity has 5 trustees:

Donna Trudgeon (Chairman) Lizzie Smith (Secretary) Ron Tulley (Treasurer) Angela Walker Gill Malcolm

The background story:

1920 The Edward Hain Memorial Hospital was opened as a memorial to Captain Edward Hain, the only son of a prominent local family, who was killed in action in the First World War.

1948 The hospital was taken over by the National Health Service

2016 The in-patient wards at the hospital closed

2021 The NHS declared the hospital surplus to requirements

2023 The hospital building is purchased from the NHS to enable it to be run as a Health and Well-being Centre for the benefit of the residents of St Ives to be known as The Edward Hain Centre.

The ongoing role of the Friends:

For many years the League of Friends of the Edward Hain Memorial Hospital supported the work of the hospital and raised substantial sums of money to provide facilities at the hospital. With the closure of the hospital and the establishment of the Edward Hain Centre, the “Friends” group now exists to raise funds to support the work of the Edward Hain Centre and accordingly the Charity Commission agreed that our organisation should now be known as the Friends of the Edward Hain Centre.

Although the Centre is being operated by a separate charity, the role of the Friends remains important as ever – to raise funds to support the work of the Centre.

Fund raising:

We have been very fortunate that the local community has been so helpful in supporting all our fundraising efforts. Businesses, local organisations and individuals have provided generous support and enabled us a raise over £20,000 during the course of 2024.

These fundraising events have included coffee mornings, including the ever-popular Feast Day coffee morning at the Western Hotel; a bingo night at the Polmanter Tourist Park; a soft toy tombola in Lifeboat Day; an Art Sale in the Salvation Army hall; a series of quiz nights; a charity auction at the Lifeboat Inn; a cream tea at the Carbis Bay Hotel; an Abba evening at the St Ives Rugby Club, carol singing at the Treloyan Manor, a wreath making session in Carbis Bay and we rounded the year off with a Boxing Day plunge on Porthminster beach.

The Friends took over the organisation of the annual Shanty Shout event which raised over £5,000. We also get an ongoing income from a 50/50 Club which we run throughout the year in which members participate in monthly draws.

We are very grateful to the many volunteers who have helped us run these various events and to the local businesses who have so generously supported us.

Examination of the Friends of Edward Hain (FoEH) financial accounts - 2024

I have examined the Friends of Edward Hain 2024 accounts with reference to the following supporting documentation as provided to me by the FoEH Treasurer:

b) The draft summary account for filing with the Charity Commission in respect of the year 2024

c) The detailed FoEH Hain accounts for 2024, including the Barclay’s cheque account and the Barclay’s Reserve account held at Barclay’s Bank for 2024.

d) The 50/50 Club transaction account for 2024

In relation to the scope of the examination, I have:

1) reconciled the 2024 Hain accounts with reference to the summary accounts for both 2023 and (drafted) 2024 to verify the correct opening and closing balance positions.

2) reconciled the Reserve account to transactions made with the Cheque account.

3) checked the Hain accounts in respect of the accuracy of incomings and outgoings and the cumulative account totals.

4) checked the Hain accounts to ensure that accurate representations were made to the summary accounts.

5) sample-checked the bank statements against the Hain account transactions and the account’s cumulative totals.

6) checked sample invoices for reconciliation to the Hain accounts and for effective payment controls.

7) made an assessment of the main risks and mitigating controls involved in the financial processes ie the need for any 2 from 3 signatories for all payments; and the routine reporting of FoEH’s financial position to the trustees.

Having examined the above accounts and processes I hereby verify that they are an accurate and complete reflection of the transactions to which they relate. Effective financial controls have been agreed and appear to be adhered to.

Moreover, there were no issues relating to the accounts which in my opinion would necessitate any cause for concern by the FoEH trustees.
