Warkworth War Memorial Hall - Annual Report (1/4/21 to 31/3/22)
(Registered charity, number 225812)
The Warkworth War Memorial Hall, built in 1866, serves as the village hall for the people of Warkworth and surrounding areas, providing a vital facility for a wide variety of communal activities. It is managed as a registered charity for use by local inhabitants without distinction of political, religious or other opinions. It offers a range of activities encouraging Community Activities (Coffee Mornings, Art Group, Choir, Community Cinema, Drama Group, Flower Club, History Society and WI), physical well being (Dance Fitness, Pilates, Carpet Bowls and Yoga), provides a meeting venue for the Parish Council, hosts dances, concerts and plays and is used for ad hoc events for the local community. Use of the Hall since November 1928 by the British Legion came to an end following the winding up of the Legion’s Warkworth branch.
It is a stone built building, part of which is listed. In normal times the Hall income and annual expenses are reasonably balanced. Building maintenance work has been financed by grants and hall funds accruing from a property sale in 2006. Whilst our end of year balance is comfortable £20,000 is already committed for re-pointing work and we need to maintain a reserve of £50,000 to enable re-tiling of the roof when needed. We will continue to seek grants for building maintenance work in the hope of limiting our call on our reserves each year to £5,000 to £10,000, with the intention of giving our existing funds a lifetime of at least 12 years.
Work on re-pointing the north wall was ongoing for much of the year, with some grant support from the Parish and Northumberland Councils. The Hall heating system was moved on to a programmable thermostat in October and reflector panels inserted behind radiators.
Following Covid closures, the Hall re-opened on the 17th May. Most of the regular bookings have gradually returned with the exception of the Flower Club, which has now disbanded. Music concerts re-started in August and continue to be well supported. In October we welcomed the return of the Community Cinema, now re-titled the Film Club. This has benefitted from improvements in screen size and in sound, from additional stage mounted speakers. A new Hall logo has been agreed.
Plans are in place to re-floor the main hall, for which lottery funding has been obtained, and to re-decorate the British Legion Room, which is now available for general use. Hall funds will be used for this re-decoration and for the main expenditure on re-pointing the north wall. We also look forward to provision of WiFi, promised by Alncom, and a free assessment of the Hall for solar power with battery back-up.
The Hall is managed by Trustees with committee meetings 4 times a year, plus an AGM. The Committee is made up of volunteers and representatives from various user groups. Trustees during this year were Peter Burnham (Chair), Tim Gray (Treasurer), Yvonne Stoddart (Booking Secretary), Belinda Booth/Marion Jones (Minutes Secretary), John Lilley, Janet Buist, Barry Jones, Jeff Watson, Angela Mein, Sandie Saunders and Sheila Pearson.
