GMD Annual Return
The purpose of GMD is to as follows .
To provide religious instruction in sign language. 2. to provide means of social intercourse mental culture and reasonable recreation for the deaf and dumb and their friends. 3. to assist in finding work for those of good character. 4. the protection and promotion of the welfare of the deaf and dumb without any religious or other distinction.
Activity to date
GMD continues to support the members of Bridgend and Pontypridd Sport and Social Clubs, however it continues to be a tough financial climate. GMD have requested support from Wales Council for the Deaf, Interlink and Bavo for steer on the direction of GMD for the future.
Both Pontypridd and Bridgend are becoming increasing independent leading to a duplication of activities, therefore with the support from the respective clubs GMD have agreed to grant full autonomy for both Pontypridd and Bridgend Sport and Social Club and the trustees will work with WCD, Interlink and BAVO to seek ways how GMD as a charity can close down and dispose of its assets.
While it is sad to see a charity that is over 100 years old deciding to close the trustees feel that it has outlived its purpose and that the deaf community would be better served with two independent clubs.
The trustees would like to thank the members of the respective club for their amazing support to raise monies to cover the bills.
In the meantime the charity continues to provide a safe space for deaf people to meet with activities to bring deaf people together from all over south Wales and beyond.
Finances
It continues to be a difficult year with significant increase in bills some of which have been astronomical. With support from WCD we have been able to work with utility companies get a refund which is why the accounts look high. There has been a period where we have paid bills only for it to be refunded straight away. If the income refund is discounted from the account it would be £7,141.75 less.
There have also been issues accessing banks which haven’t been deaf friendly, all the trustees are deaf and use BSL, the move to online banking and telephones has made it extremely difficult for trustees to access banking and we are grateful to WCD support getting through to the banks. The situation has been made worse when the previous treasurer left with no hand over.
Going forward
The trustees will continue to work with local organisations and experts to bring GMD to closures with its assets disposed of according to the deeds.
