TRUSTEES REPORT
FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 DECEMBER 2023
The trustees present Iheir annual report and fin8n¢ial statements loi the yèar ended 31 Deoernbei 2Q23.
Th$ financial 818letnEnls have been prepared in accordance with the accounting policies sel out in note 1 to the
financial statemeNI8 and comply with tho charily's IgoveTning doeumenll, the Charitie5 Act 2011 and "Acetsunling
and Reporting by Charities.. Slalèment ol Recommended Practice 8pplicable to charities preparing their accounts in
accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Iraland IFRS 102}
lèffective 1 January 20191.
Objectives and actlvities
The object of the Blanch is lo promote the work and objectives of the National Society within the Branch aréa of
Halifax. Huddersfield and Bradlord. namely to use all lawful means to prevent cruelly, promote kindness to and
alleviate the suffering of animals.
The Branch gives priority lo those anima15 Wlth a genuing welfare need 8$ identified by memb8rs ol Ihe RSPCA
inspecloiate. Such aTrim8ls may be the subject of an ongoing case or may have been removed with the consent of
an owner ullable to rneel the animal's welfare nseds.
These animals gre subject lo appropriale vetertnary Ireatmenl. rehabililalion and rehoming under the direction of thè
8[a￿ch'S animal ¢are staff. Prior lo 18homing all animals are neutered and microchipped.
The Branch also operates a low-cost neuleiing scheme and a welfare assistance scheme lo provide financial
support to those members ol the public on qualifying benefits.
staff are assisted in this work by a dedicated team of volLEnlèers wilhoul whose help we could not provide the level
of service or volurne of work we achieve.
Public benefil
All charities in England & Wales musl have charllable airns that arè for the public benefit. 11 is not enough Ihal the
RSPCA'S work benefits animals. ln deciding what activilies Ihe BT8nch should undertake, we have complied wilh
thè duty undei ltte Charities Act 2Q11 to have due regard lo public beneh't guidanc8 published by the Charities
Commission.
Richard Martin, one of the RSPCA'S founders, identified the Society's prime aim as being to allei thE moral feelings
ol the country. He recognisecl that taking care ol animals is an essential part of any civilisalion. This still resonates
today.
Preventing cruelty to animals promotes hurnane sentiments towards animals in humankind which involves moral
benefit lo the human community as a whole. Whilst Ihis public bènèfit is clear il is dilficult to quantify and must be
balanced against any delrimenl.
The 8ranch's animal welfare work, although local in natu￿, benefits S￿letY at large, and also Aims to help people in
need wilh the care of their animals.
The next section tsf this report highlights th& Branch's main 8clivities and demotnslfates the benefil provided to the
PLSblic. All our charitable a¢livi(ie5 focus on promoting kindness and preventing QT suppressing cruelly lo animals
and are undertaken to further these purposes for the public benefit.
Volunt8grs
The walue of volunteèrs, time is not included within these account8, we have benefited from 411 volunteers ￿thIn
our charity shops and fundraising network, who contributed 27,175 hours in 2023 across our network of shops.
Of this voluntéèr total the Animal Cenlre h8d approximately 193 volunteers who worked 11,240 hours in 2023.

Aohievement5 and performance
Significanl aGfrvilies and achievements against objeclives
Chalys Overvi8w 2023
We began the ypar with the continuing irnpacl of the energy crisis cre8t6d by the war in Ukraine and its effect on the
cost of living, and the accompanying need lor ffnancial support amongst some ol the public in Caring for Ihèir
animals. This has continL¢ed throughout this year and is only just now appearing to lev61 out and perhaps begin lo
ease.
Inspectors continue lo try to treat more animals in situ., however, there remain large numbers of animals in
lempDf2ry accorntnodalion, awaiting space in kennels in RSPCA branches lor rehabilitation and rehoming. The
Branch is also continuing to extend our behavioural aclivilies to includ6 cats and overall lo ensure we oblain better
rehomsng results foi all our anim81s.
Compared wilh last year we have takèn in 428 animals 12022.. 4261, rehomed 379 {2022". 3511 and helped 447
12022". 4391 to rèceive welfare assistance. At the end ol December 2023 there were 68 animals in our care
12022.701.
Trading in our Charity shops was affÉeted by the economic 8ltualion. but W8 ￿corded 8 small incr88s6 in income at
£1,375,03212022'. £1,364.5361 and generated a net profil of £309,97412022". 371.7991. We sold 335,000 ilerns in
lolal. slighlly fewtsr ￿mpa￿ed with 357,000 Items in 2022, bul ol higher individual value.
This result seems lo beal out the Con￿rn l eKprèssed last year when commenting on the economic situation and ils
impact on relall, in th8t although Charity shops offer opportunity for customers to buy al lowei priTrs, those
customers may instead have decided lo just ulilise their existing items for1onger.
Online sales continue to be 3 focus for polential growth, bul this has be8n held back by the need to find mole
suitable accommodation for an effeclive op$ration. We hope to have this in place in Ihe near future and lo be able lo
build that outlet in the remaindeT of 2024.
Fundraising is always a focus., we continue to rely significantly on dtsnations and legacies lo fund our actwilies and
this year that incorll& was down on 2022. There is rnore and more eompelilion lor these c(>ntribulions from othef
charities so one ol our key actions IOT this year is to ensure Qui message is reaching potential donors and
supporters through the vaiious media. ITr addition, our tearn have undertaken events all around our area which have
been well supported and enjoyed by Ihose who allended as well as conlrtbuling lo our income.
The possibility of a new Animal Cenlre site was mentioned last year, bul Ihe particular sile we had beèn pursuing fell
through due to concerns on both cost and feasibilily. However. we are putting togelhei a new and exciting plan
based on our existing sile in Wade Street which we hope to be able tts bring you news ol very soon.
More iecently, our Branch Manager left us in February 2024 and we are currently considering how lo replace him,
as the role is likely lo change in view of the above. As a result, the Trustees have risèn lo the Ghallenge artd are
taking the opportunity to work with key s13ff and Stakeholders to refocus our 5tialegy and ensure the organisaliL>n is
in the best position lo itllplemenl our plans foi the future.
As always, thanks are due to 80 many people In achieving our ros￿11$ this year and in continuing 10 make the
Branch a success..
Thanks lo our amazing staff the Animal Centre team, our Fundraisers, those wnning our Charity Shops and the
key suppori staff who handle all the administration and finance
none ol this would be possible wilhout the hugè
knowledge and commilmenl they bring to their ioles.,

Other matters
Our approach lo identifying and assessing the risk8 01 material rnissiatemenl in respect ol irre9ularities, including
fraud and non-compliance with laws and regulaliollg, was as follows:
The engagement partner ensuièd that the gngagemenl le8m collectively had the appropriate compelence,
capabilities and skills lo identify or ieeognise non-cotnpliance with applicable laws and rÈgulation8'.
We identified the laws and regulations applicable to thè company through discussions with direclors and
other man39ement, and frorn our commercial knowledge and experience of the ¢nduslry sector..
We focused on specific Saws and regulation5 which we considered may have a direct rnaleiial effect on the
rinancial 51alemellts or the operations ol the company. including the Cofflpanies Act 2006, laxatio
legislation and dala protection. anli-bribery, employment, environmental and health and safely legislation",
We assessed the extent of Compliance with the laws and regulations identified above through making
enquiries of management and inspecting legal correspondence,. and
nsured laws and règulalions were communicated within the audit lÈam regularty and the team remained
alert to instances of non-¢omp118nce throughout the audit.
We assessed the Susceplibilily of the compally 5 financial statèménls to mater¢al mi5Staternent, including obtaining
an und8rstanding of how fraud might occur, by..
Making enquiries ol managernenl as lo where they considered there was a susceptsbillly lo fraud, Ih8if
knowledge ol actual, suspected and alleged fraud.,
Consldering the inlèrnal controls in place lo mitigate risks ol fraud and non-compliance with laws and
regul8tions". and
Understanding the design of the company's remuneration policies.
To Address the ri8k of fraud through management bias and override of controls, we..
Performed analytical procedures lo identify any unusual or unexp8ct8d relationships..
Tested Journal entri85 to identify unusual transactions
Assessed whether judgements and as5UWPtions made in detèrmining the accounting estimates set out in
nole 2 were indicative of potential bias. and
Invosli9ated the rationale behind significant or unusual transactions.
In response to the risks of irregularities and non-compliance with laws and regulations, we designed procedures
which induded. bul were not limiled to..
Agre8ing Iinancial slalemenl disclosures to underlying supporiing documenlalion.,
Reading the minutes of meetings of those charged wilh governance..
Enquiring of management as lo actual and potential liligalion and claims,. and
Reviewing correspc>ndencé with HMRC, relevant regulators and the cornpany's 18gal advisors.
There ale inherent limitations in our audit procedures described above The more removed that laws and
regulations ale from the financial transactions, the less likely il is that we would become aware ol non-cotllpliance.
Auditing slandaids also limit the gudit procedu185 required to identify non-compliancé with laws and regulations lo
enquiry of the directors and other management and th8 inspection of regulatory and legal corie5pondence, if 8ny.
Material misstatements thai arise due lo fraud can be harder lo delect than those that arise from eiror as they may
involve delibeiate concealment or collusion.
