OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES

The RSPCA Wyth Sir Branch(formerly RSPCA Gwent branch) supports the work and objectives of the National Society and aims to promote animal welfare, kindness and to prevent or suppress cruelty to animals by all lawful means.

Page 2

RSPCA Wyth Sir Branch Trustees Annual Report

The main activity we undertake is fundraising so we can pay towards veterinary treatment, rehoming an animal, foster care, micro-chipping and neutering. We do this by using the voucher scheme. Some of the work we do helps to control the dog/cat population though neutering and benefits the public by giving them financial help, which in turn promotes reasonbale pet ownership.

We support the society's inspectorate and the difficult work they do. They dispense vouchers if an animal is in need and they also provide education, information and advice. The work they do is key to the prevention of cruelty which is part of the objectives of the RSPCS and of course Wyth Sir Branch, which is a moral benefit to the public.

ACHIEVEMENTS AND PERFORMANCE

The trustees continue to look at ways of developing the branch, which enables it, not only to support animals in need, but also support the public. We provide local pet owners, living in our branch area on low incomes and qualifying benefits, with financial support, through our welfare assistance scheme by subsidising the cost of veterinary treatment for sick animals. The total number of animals supported by the branch during the year were

294 Dogs

246 Cats

28 Rabbits and Small Furries During the last year, the branch employed a branch manger to oversee the day to day running of the shops, animal welfare officer and fundraising; as well as planning and developing new services in our area. Our full-time animal welfare officer left this year; this post has now been filled along with an additional part time post; the additional post was created as a result of the branch covering a larger area. The full time animal welfare officer will take on her new role in the new year.

The branch manager is looking at ways the branch can become more directly involved with supporting animals, one suggestion already being looked into, is the branch setting up a cat rehoming scheme, with our animal welfare officers managing the whole rehoming process. Hopefully if all goes as planned the service will be operational at the start of 2023.

The branch animal welfare officer and wildlife casualty volunteers have had a very busy year, assisting animals and members of the public, throughout the branch area and has worked with the national society Inspectorate and Animal Centres on a number of occasions, supporting animals in need.

Despite very difficult trading conditions both Chepstow and Cwmbran shops, continue to bring in regular income to the branch. The Chepstow shop is now well established on the Chepstow high street and the Cwmbran shop has just completed its first year of trading. The branch manager and shop managers are working hard for the branch to continue to receive this valuable income.

On behalf of the committee, I would like to thank all the staff and volunteers, working in the office, our shops and in the community for all the work they have done over the last year. Thanks to them, many animals have received care and support, when they needed it most.

FINANCIAL REVIEW

Total gross income for the year was £428,384, split £371,633 unrestricted and £56,751 restricted. Included in donations was £169,399 from the closure of the Glamorgan (North and East Branch) of this £112,648 was unrestricted and £56,751 was restricted.

Page 3

Trustees Annual Report

Total expenditure in the year was £266,988, split £254,033 unrestricted and £12,955 restricted. This resulted in a surplus for the year of £161,396 (£117,600 unrestricted and £43,796 restricted.

During the year, the branch received £41,792 (2021 £43,331) from the national Door to Door campaign run by RSPCA HQ.

Income from the shops at Chepstow and Cwmbran was £132,254 (2021 £53,804 Cwmbran opened December 2021)

The branches reserves policy is unchanged from last year and is set at the amount of £100,000 this is equivalent to 18 months running costs, this is reviewed every six months.

PLANS FOR FUTURE PERIODS

We continue to support where needed on a case by case basis the Newport Animal Centre and Cat Rehoming Centre based at Pets at Home in Newport, both are managed and operated by the RSPCA National Society. In 2023 we will continue to have the maximum efficiency in animal welfare now the merger has been completed. During the year we will be starting our own private boarding establishment of 4 PODS to take in kittens and cats for rehoming supported by our cat fostering volunteers.

It is our intention to continue to provide a voucher scheme to provide assistance to members of the public on low income and those animals with no known owner. Along with those animals that request from our inspectorate is sought for our assistance.

Our branch staff will look to build our volunteer base in administration, van driving, shops but also fundraising to maximise income from the wider branch area now. Community engagement is also our priority particularly those most in need who may be struggling to feed their animals.

STRUCTURE, GOVERNANCE AND MANAGEMENT

The RSPCA Gwent branch is an unincorporated charitable association and is a separately registered branch of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, carrying out its direct animal welfare work in the area of the old county of Gwent

Expenditure

Taxation

The charity is exempt from tax on its charitable activities.

Tangible fixed assets and depreciation

Depreciation is provided at the following annual rates in order to write off each asset over its estimated useful life:

useful life:
Motor vehicles 25% reducing balance
Fixtures, fittings and
equipment
15% reducing balance

Intangible fixed assets and amortisation

Intangible fixed assets (including purchased goodwill, patents and trademarks) are carried at cost less accumulated amortisation and impairment losses.

Leasehold improvements 5% straight line

Trade and other debtors

Trade and other debtors are recognised at the settlement amount due after any trade discount offered. Prepayments are valued at the amount prepaid net of any trade discounts due.

Cash and cash equivalents

Cash and cash equivalents comprise cash at bank and on hand, demand deposits with banks and other short-term highly liquid investments with original maturities of three months or less and bank overdrafts. In the statement of financial position, bank overdrafts are shown within borrowings or current liabilities. In the Statement of Cash Flows, cash and cash equivalents are shown net of bank overdrafts that are repayable on demand and form an integral part of the company's cash management.

Page 9

RSPCA Wyth Sir Branch Notes to the Accounts

Trade and other creditors

Short term creditors are measured at the transaction price. Other creditors and provisions are recognised where the charity has a present obligation resulting from a past event that will probably result in the transfer of funds to a third party and the amount due to settle the obligation can be measured or estimated reliably. Creditors and provisions are normally recognised at their settlement amount after allowing for any trade discounts due.

Leased assets

Where the charity enters into a lease which entails taking substantially all the risks and rewards of ownership of an asset, the lease is treated as a finance lease.

Leases which do not transfer substantially all the risks and rewards of ownership to charity are classified as operating leases.

Assets held under finance leases are initially recognised as assets of the charity at their fair value at the inception of the lease or, if lower, at the present value of the minimum lease payments. The corresponding liability to the lessor is included in the balance sheet date as a finance lease obligation. Lease payments are apportioned between finance expenses and reduction of the lease obligation so as to achieve a constant rate of interest on the remaining balance of the liability. Finance expenses are recognised immediately, unless they are directly attributable to qualifying assets, in which case they are capitalised in accordance with the charity's policy on borrowing costs.

Assets held under finance leases are depreciated in the same way as owned assets.

Operating lease payments are recognised as an expense on a straight-line basis over the lease term. In the event that lease incentives are received to enter into operating leases, such incentives are recognised as a liability. The aggregate benefit of incentives is recognised as a reduction of rental expense on a straight-line basis.

Pension costs

The charity operates a defined contribution plan for its employees. A defined contribution plan is a pension plan under which the charity pays fixed contributions into a separate entity. Once the contributions have been paid the charity has no further payments obligations. The contributions are recognised as expenses when they fall due. Amounts not paid are shown in accruals in the balance sheet. The assets of the plan are held separately from the charity in independently administered funds.

Receipt of donated goods, facilities and services

All donated goods, facilities and services received are recognised within incoming resources and expenditure at an estimate of the value to the charity.
