The Derbyshire Archaeological and Natural History Society held its inaug￿al meeting at the Midland
Hotel in Derby on 25 January 1878 and published the fwst volume of its Journal in the following
year. In 1962 it fornmlly c¢as¢d to be a society for the study of Natural History and has subsequently
been known as the Derbyshire Archae010￿Cal &Ki¢ty. All of the &Kiety's actt'vittes are a￿anged
and managed on a voluntary basis by its memlxrs. The Society is ON to anyone interested in its
Objects.
CHARITABLE OBSEcfs AND ACTIVITIES

The objects of the Society shall be th¢ study of the archwlogy and history of the County of Derby
and allied subjects, the publication of origuw] and documents, and the holth'ng of meetings of
an educational nature to disseminate Inforn￿tion about those subjects. No activity shall be undertaken
by the Society in pursuance of these objects wh]¢h would preJuth¢¢ its status as a charity.
The objects of the Society also allow the fOrn￿tiOn of 'such se¢ts'ons as it may from time to time thu
fit,. The subject areas of the current sections are: Archaeolo￿¢41 R¢searclL Architecture. Loca]
History and Industrial Archaeology.

The Derbyshire Archaeological Journal ￿0VideS a penn8nent record of significant archaeological
and historical research and is avwlable in the public domain through libraries and online via the
Archaeology Data Service.
Derbyshire Nfi'scellany. a local history magazine, aims to engage a wide range of the public with
their local heritage, and is available in the public domain through libraries, with back copies
available to download on the Society's website.
Public lectures organised by the Society and by its four consts'tuent ￿tiOnS covering.
archaeology. archit￿, local history and industrial archaeology. These are mainly in a'hybnd,
forniat that can be attended in-person or online from anywhere in the worl
Walks and visits exploring sites of interest in the county and further afield Members have priority
booking for these. but any unfilled places arc adverttsed online to the public.
A library with an extensive collection of books and Journals relcvant to the kn'story and
atchaeology of Derbyshire. The library is open to the public f(T browsing and tesearch.
Small grants to support volunteer-run research or restoration proj￿ relevant to the S￿Iety's
objects.
Maintenance and interpr¢tstion of two historic schedul￿ monurn¢nts owned by the Society. the
remains of the medieval chap¢l at Cromford Brid￿ and of the Morl¢y Park furnaces.
A website that provides inforniation about all our artivitics and Imks to online access to our
publications, and to other organisats'ons with rel￿ant interests.
A collection of historical documents. n￿ps, plans. photographs and Ill￿trationS which is

Most of the Winter Prowme lectures are now present￿ as 'hybrid' ¢vents with in person talks
hcld at St Mary's Church Hall in Derby being shown simultsneously on Zoom. The offer of a number
of places on Zoom to the g¢n¢ral public. via the Ev¢ntbrite online Ix)okn'ng platfonn, contEnu¢s to
improve our public profile and has attracted new members. whe￿ pennissible. and with the speekers,
agreement. the lectures are also recorded and made aV￿lable onlinc through the Society'5 website for
a limited period as a 'cAlch up, facility for anyoD¢ who missed the livc ¢vent. We CoThtin￿ to hold
most of our meets'ngs on Fnday eVenU￿$ al St Mary's Church Hall in Derby buL as an ¢xperimenL

EMIAC Conference
In addition to the main programme of tslks and visits. the Industrial Archaeology Section organised
an East Midlands Industrial Archaeology Conferenc£ (EMIAC). This was a full day event to learn
about the development of artificial lights'ng and its use on Lx>unty house estates, the extensive
improvements made to Sudbury Hall and the village in th¢ 19th century. and the recent restoratson by
the Derbyshire Historic Buildings Trust of the original estate gasworks building. which mad¢ an
excellent venue for the day. The ￿nferenLy was attended by 57 parncipants from across the East
Midlands ￿gIon.
Summer T0￿r
The Society's annual summer tours, wlll'ch began in 2(K)3, provide the opportunity to visit a range of
sites too far away from Derbyshire to visil in a day. travelling by coacty with accommodation for 4-
5 nights arranged in a suitsble hotcl.
The Sooiety's 2023 Summer Tour lcd by David Carder. was to East Sussex bas&1 in Eastbourne and
featured an extensive itinerary including Al￿st00 L¢we4 Bnghton. Rottingdean. Bexhill-on-s
Hasting& Battle and Bodiam, wlll'le two evening I￿tureS provided a scholarly background to the lour
with an introduction to Sussex and its architecturally significant bwldings. En route, the group also
Visit￿ Michclham Priory and Pevens¢y Roman fort and castle and on the return journey visit
Parham HO￿e.

Th¢ Journal is published annually by the Society and is fr¢e to all MeMb￿s. All volumes from 1879.

individual articles can be downloaded fr¢¢ of charge. A number of cumulative indexes publish¢d by

The Library
The Library continues to provide a valuable resourL* for the S(Kiety. The footfall has been steady on
the nonnal twice monthly oFning days with an increase on the Saturday morning openings. The
Library Open Afternoon in January 2023 Combin￿ the event with short tslks by members with 50
people in attendance. The library was also open to members before the AGM. The th'splays of special
books always create interest and th'scussion and we will contsnue to build on this.
An e-mail newsletter is sent to members four times a year (and is also available on the Society's
website) and includes news and reviews of re£ent acquisitions. infonnation about some of the
library's lesser known research resourc¢s and contrlbutions by members on their own favourite items
in the collection. During the year 177 books and journals have been ISSU￿ and 57 book5 have been

The Society is repr¢sented on the Derbyshire Ard)aeologic41 Advisory Committee and the Dethy
City Council Conservation and Hentage Advisory Committee.

assets and areas of particular imw)rtance worthy of conservation or protective management in the
county. and supports th¢ th'ss¢mination of knowledg¢ about th¢ h¢ritag¢ of the area and encourages
research of high quality. It also provides a fonm) in wlll'ch news on a[ch￿logIcal fieldwork in the

Representalion at outside evenls
The Society was rewesented at the 'Ashover Artefacts Exhibits'on, in October. and an introductson to
the Society, its publications. library and collectt'ons was given at the Derwent Vallcy ￿'11S World
Heritage Site Research Workshop in November. Some of the Society's cnllects'on of watercolours by
the noted ceramic artjst Zachanah Boreman were loaned to the Arkwnght Society for an exhibition
'Our Landscape as the Georgjans saw it. held Ls part of the Geor￿an Derbyshire Festival at Cromford
Mills on the weekend of 30 September- l October 2023.
Research and reytoration graffj.Y
During the year a grant of £250 w&$ made from the Monica Pilling fund for the analysis of pottery
sherds found dunng the excavation of a px)ssible manor house in Belper. Members of the Society may
apply for a grant of up to £iCK)O to assist r¢search for a woject aligned to the objects of the Society.
BEQUESTS AND DONATIONS
The Society continues to benefit from the generO￿ty of its benefactors and members. During 2023
the Society received a bequest of £50¢XI from the estate of Mrs Margard Mallender. The Council
resolved that some of these funds would be usoa to ￿MmISsion 3D laser scanning of the Society's
two properties. the Morley Park blast furnaces and the remains of the medieval chapel at CromfoTd
Bridge. Whil¢ both of these historic schedul￿ monuments have been in the ownership of the Society
for many years. neither has ever been recorded in any de￿1. The work will provide base line surv¢ys
which can be used to monitor the conth'tion of these siks over bme.
At its meeting in September the Council accept￿ the offer of a generous donation from a member of
the Society to establish a fund for th¢ purw)se of furthering the analysis and publication of the findings
of the archaeological excavatsons carried out at Repton in the 19705, 1980s and 1990s by Harold
Mccarter Taylor. Birthe Kjoby¢-Biddle and Martin Biddle, which are as yet largely unpublished The
bulk of the excavation archive has now been deposited with Derby Museums. The fimd will be
managed by a committee. the membership of which will includ¢ Tepresentatives of th¢ DAS Council.

The Derby Building5 Rccord comprises 301 unpublish¢d r¢TM)rts and m¢&suTed drawings of
farn]houses. cottages and other sinlllar vernacular buildings larg¢ly around Derby, but also including
properties in Staffordshtre. Leic¢st¢rsbire and Nottinghamshire. The Project was begun in 1987 by
Barbara Hutton FSA (1920-2015) who authored the maionty of the r¢FK)rts and whose intent w&8
always to make this research publicly available. In orderto facilitat¢ thi's. her son Michael Hutton has

g¢nerously assigned his COPyTight in his mother's Unpublish￿ re￿rtS to the Society. the Dethy Local
Studies Library and the Historic Environment Record- all of which hold copies of the DBR reports

STRucfuRE, GOVERNANCE AND MANAGEMENT
Governing Documenl
The Society is an un1nc0rw)rat￿ as5(￿la￿.0n founded in 1878. Its governing document is the Rules
as approved at the Amiual Genetal Meeting held on 24 April 2015. The Society is a Register¢d

Property ownership
The Society owns the remains of th¢ Morley Park blast furnaces and the medieval bridge Chapel at
Cromford. Both are vested in the Official Cust(Kb'an for Charities. The Soci¢ty also owns a small
piece of land at Darley Abbey the exact descriptson of which is imprecise and so cannot be re￿stered
with the Land Re￿Sty.
Tn&Ftee seleclion methods
The chan'ty is a membership organisation and its Honorary Officets and members of the Council of
management are ¢lected by the members at the Annual General Meeting. Thc Honorary Officers and
members of the Council of management are all tr￿teeS of the charity.
An investment committee. set up in 2021. advises the Council on suitsble investments The members
of this committee are all trustees of the cbarity.
Governance andmanagemenl
During 2023 th¢ Council held two half-day wotkshops for mcmb¢rs of Council and its s￿tion
committees. to review the Society's governance. th¢ contributs'on and role of th¢ scctions and the

management of all of its events and activiti&s. The Council also ￿ntInUeS to keep under review the
management of its financial rasourcu in the light of considerably increas¢d costs.
Membership
The charity is a memb¢rship organisation with 308 inth'vidual memberships. of which 73 are two
or more persons at the same adthess, and 40 institutions at the year end. There w&8 a net lo￿ of 28
mcmberslll'ps over the year.
