## **Charitable Objectives**

The area of benefit is the parishes of Kildwick and Farnhill and the surrounding neighbourhood.

The object of the charity is the provision and maintenance of a village hall for use by the inhabitants of the area of benefit without distinction of political, religious or other opinions, including use for meetings, lectures and classes, and other forms of recreation and leisure-time occupation, with the object of improving the conditions of life for the inhabitants.

## **Public Benefit**

In running the charity the Trustees have complied with the duty in section 17(5) of the 2011 Charities Act to have due regard to guidance published by the Charity Commission with regard to public benefit.

## **Achievements and Performance**

During the year we completed a major programme of repairs and refurbishment to update the facilities and make them more attractive to use and hire. These works have taken circa 18 months to complete and have included :

- Installation of a new fitted kitchen on the ground floor

- Replacement of upstairs fire doors and the downstairs kitchen window

- Repair of Garage/store roof

- Re-decoration and re-carpeting of an upstairs room to create a new meeting space for small groups

- Refurbishment of the upstairs toilets to remove outdated urinals and create two unisex cubicles

Our plans to subsequently promote and increase use of the improved facilities were thwarted when a burst pipe in December 2022 caused substantial damage to the upstairs kitchen ceiling and to the floor of the hall below. Following liaison with our insurers a contractor was appointed to repair the damage including the laying of a

new floor in the ground floor hall. Completion of the works took longer than expected
due to problems with the new floor and the hall was still out of action at the financial
year end but has since been returned to use following remedial works by the
contractor.
The loss of income from room hire during this period was minimal as regular hirers of
the institute were able to use the upstairs hall while the downstairs hall was out of
action. This meant that activities such as pilates, Craven Flagcrackers, knit and
natter and the local history group were able to continue and the Institute Committee
and Famhill Parish Council could still meet there. The upstairs hall was also
available for private hire for parties and events.
The main impact was on the holding of coffee mornings. talks and other social
activities which are popular with local residents and raise a small amount of income
towards the upkeep of the building as these are usually held in the downstairs hall as
this is fully accessible. A planned exhibition by the local history group to coincide
with the Coronation of King Charles111 was also unable to go ahead.
The trustees would like to thank
all users of the institute for their understanding and Patien￿ while the works
were carried out with especial thanks to Joanne and Paul for dealing with the
Insuran￿ company and contractors
Chris Brigham for his many years of invaluable servits as a trustee
Councillor Andrew Brown for providing a grant from Craven District Council
towards items for the refurbished kitchen
The friends and supporters who have helped us in many different ways during
the year. We couldn't do it without you.
Looking ahead our priorities indude encouraging greater use of the institute and re-
starting popular events such as coffee mornings. We will continue to improve the
facilities as funds allow and update the website. The village calendar competition
continues to prove very popular and will be repeated in 2024.
The annual report was approved by the trustees on 12 December 2023 and signed
on their behalf by-
Paul Beswick, Chair
