Committee members are key members of the charity because of their high level of involvement and commitment, when organising events and/or heading departments. They attend regular meetings, eight times a year, to evaluate and approve hospital requests for funding as well as report back on volunteers’ services, fund raising events and special projects. 

The Friends’ Committee has worked tirelessly in 2025 to meet and approve grant requests and to organise fund-raising events and countless innovative projects.

## **OBJECTIVES** 

The main Objectives of Friends of The Royal Marsden, Chelsea are: 

To supplement the service provided by The Royal Marsden Hospital, Chelsea, for the health, welfare and comfort of the patients, therein by the provision of facilities, buildings and equipment which may be required for the treatment of such patients, or for the efficient running of the hospital. 

To provide, or to assist in the provision of amenities in The Royal Marsden Hospital, Chelsea for patients and staff, including the provision and running of hospital shops, canteens, libraries, flower services, the establishment of clubs, health and recreation centres, hostels and rest and convalescent homes for the use and benefit of such persons.

Welcome to The Annual Report and Accounts for The Friends of The Royal Marsden Chelsea 2025. 

This year, our 90th Anniversary, has been an outstanding year for The Friends. The charity has flourished in both the _Wendy de Capell Brooke, President_ contribution our volunteers 

The report illustrates the breadth of these achievements in 2025. We are grateful for the support we receive from The Royal Marsden staff. 

I would like to thank our Chair Cristiana, Vice Chair Sarah and Hon. Treasurer Ian for their dedication and hard work over the last three years as their term of office comes to an end. The Friends has thrived under their leadership. 

This is the Trustees’ Report and Financial Statements for the year ended 31 December 2025. 

It is prepared in accordance with the accounting policies set out in Notes to the Accounts and complies with the Charity’s governing document, the Charities Act 2011 and Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland published in October 2019.

_2025 has been one of our busiest years, new projects, the celebration of our 90th Anniversary, the many fund-raising events and commercial activities that have all proven really successful, and in this report, I will share some key aspects._ 


















## **THANK YOU AND GOODBYE** 

Friends of The Royal Marsden, Chelsea is a charity that serves its community with dedication and continued commitment. As Chair of this outstanding charity I have been in the position of seeing how far _Cristiana Aragoni, Chair_ and wide it has developed 

over the years, expanding its services to patients and staff of The Royal Marsden and listening to the ever-changing needs of the community that it serves. 

2025 has been a particularly special year where Friends of The Royal Marsden, Chelsea has celebrated its 90th Anniversary, a testament to a long legacy of service and a strong will to make a difference throughout the decades. 

The volunteers today are as passionate as in 1935 and the charity today can count on a strong group of over 180 active volunteers. Staff at The Royal Marsden greatly appreciate and value the strong bond that we have established, thanks to the common effort of working together towards the same goal: The Royal Marsden as a centre of excellence. 

I have had the honour of being Chair of this high-achieving charity for this three-year role and it has been an absolute privilege to lead and be part of this community and the work of a strong team. 

The Committee, the Trustees and the Volunteers have all shown tremendous dedication and have made an invaluable impact on the lives of many. I want to thank you all.

**ACHIEVEMENTS & PERFORMANCE** 


## **THE SHOP** 

The Friends’ Shop continues to be a great success and a vital hub to find all necessities without leaving The Royal Marsden’s building. Open every day of the week it serves a wide community of busy staff as well as patients and their carers, who often visit for a last minute purchase or a regular buy of our many beautiful accessories. 

Scarves, gift items, greeting cards, sandwiches, snacks, hot and cold drinks, stationary and toiletries: all can be found in the Friends Shop, where affordability and challenges of the cost of living are the constant focus. 

A team o f talented 47 volunteers serve with knowledge, care and a friendly smile, constantly refilling the busy shelves. 

Katie Sketchley, Helen Moran, Linda Wimble and Fi Egerton-Warburton spend many hours a week to constantly find the best quality at an affordable price. Their dedication and talent is a real asset. 

The shop is a major source of revenue. Its gross income in 2025, together with the shop trolley, totalled £164,209, compared to £162,272 in 2024. With a net income of over £71,000, it continues to exceed all expectations, year on year. 


## **THE CAFE** 

The Friends’ Café’ continues to grow and serves hundreds of freshly made sandwiches, a great variety of hot and cold drinks, soups, cakes, delicious tortillas, quiches and snacks, with many 

gluten-free options across the range, served with the warmth of our dedicated team of 77 enthusiastic volunteers. Open Monday to Friday, the Café offers a comforting presence in the busy Outpatients area, consistently striving to provide excellent value for money to both patients and staff. Sarah Laidlaw and the Cafe’ team have successfully continued to strive, always upgrading our variety of goods, keeping up with all food allergen guidelines, training on food preparation, leading to record beating results. 

In 2025, the café has achieved a remarkable gross income of £90,031, up from £74,973 in 2024 and a net income of £43,615, up from £31,317 in 2024. 

## **THE SHOP TROLLEY** 


The Shop Trolley , visiting wards daily, offers a selection of the shop snacks, toiletries, greeting cards and accessories to patients, their carers and staff who may not be able to leave the wards. 

The team of 22 volunteers, headed by Sally Robotham is eagerly awaited and much needed by the whole hospital community, which greets them with a smile and a warm welcome. In 2025 the shop trolley generated a gross income in excess of £8,000.

## **SILK FLOWERS COMPOSITIONS** 

The Friends also support and look after the silk flower compositions in the reception area, by the piano and in the chapel. These are changed seasonally and created by Georgiana Fiddian-Green and Fi Egerton-Warburton. 

They provide an elegant and warm touch and are much admired by staff and visitors. 



In 2025 we sadly said goodbye to Mary Herbert who was one of our longest-serving volunteer, and is remembered fondly by The Royal Marsden wider community. 

## **GARDEN & FLOWERS** 

Come rain or shine, the garden terraces are cherished by both staff and patients, particularly during lunch hours. Surrounded by lovely plants and flowers, these spaces are diligently maintained by our former chair and trustee, Marie Stacey with the help of Jane Farrell. 

These areas offer great solace, especially when a breath of fresh air is needed in the hustle and bustle of a busy hospital. 

Silk flowers compositions and fresh seasonal arrangements in the Chapel were also sponsored by the Friends. 

A team of 3 volunteers headed by Anneka MacThomas provided the service of keeping the patients’ own fresh flowers in the hospital wards, with a regular change of clean water. This service has sadly now come to an end, with new infection control guidelines being implemented. 




## **THE TEA TROLLEY IN MDU** 

A service of tea and coffee, and biscuits completely free of charge, for patients and their carers is provided daily by the Friends Tea Trolley. 

Headed by Suzanna Magill and her team of 11 volunteers. This service is proudly sponsored by the Friends. The yearly cost in 2025 was of £1,438 compared to £1,349 in 2024. 

The Tea Trolley rounds are something patients really look forward to when they attend their chemotherapy treatments.

## **WARD ASSISTANCE** 

A team of 13 volunteers overseen by Claudine Van de Vyver have supported Gifty, the hostess, during breakfast, lunch and dinner services for the patients. 

This ward has increased in capacity and, since the addition of an extra four beds, the support has become increasingly important, to ensure a smooth flow of service at mealtimes. 

Some of the long-stay patients have also benefited from a visit of the art therapy specialist, a therapy dog, a Friends’ teddy, a comforting blanket. These have all created moments of relief and sparked some joy at difficult times. In January 2025 the Friends have also purchased a new coffee machine for the family room, which provides hot drinks for the ward, free of charge and over the year it has been greatly appreciated. 


**BOOKS & MAGAZINES** 

The Friends in Chelsea regularly receive donations of books, which are sold in the Friends Shop, on a dedicated stand in Outpatients and during special sales events. Taking over from Anneke MacThomas, in 2025 we have welcomed a new team: Bryony and Angus Kinnear  to look after this hidden treasure. They have organised a number of very successful book sales in 2025 by the Regency Staircase, raising a total of £1,400. 




## **MEET & GREET** 

A team of 34 volunteers assist patients and their families and carers to navigate the many corridors of The Royal Marsden in Chelsea, from Main Reception and Wallace Wing. 

Supporting staff and providing reassurance and comfort to patients, with a smile and a warm welcome. In October, we introduced earlier shifts, volunteers now cover both receptions from 8.30am to 3.30pm. 

## **THE ARTS PROGRAMME & THE PIANO** 

Each year the Friends have contributed with a £6000 grant to the Arts Programme of the Trust, to make sure that many of the art and music focused activities can thrive at our Chelsea site. These include: music by the beds, art displays, a weekly choir for staff and volunteers. The Friends have also created a new art pack for patients. 

Our Team of pianists has grown from 11 to 14 in 2025 and are coordinated by our Hon. President June Torrance. They regularly play the Steinway piano at the base of the Regency staircase, creating a very special atmosphere as patients and family arrive at The Royal Marsden, Chelsea.

## **COLLECTION TINS** 

The Friends has a number of collection tins located all around the hospital; they are also each displaying a QR code for those who no longer carry cash. They provide a good source of income to offset the costs of the many services we support, especially the coffee machines. 

Our Trustee and active volunteer, Roger Robotham, has continued to commit his time to do all the counting of the cash in the tins and we are hugely grateful for his help, which has been constant over the years. 

## **HANDCRAFTING: SEWING & KNITTING** 

Our Café volunteer, Ruth Coles has continued to be busy sewing syringe driver and drainage bags for patients, thanks to regular donations of fabric. These are distributed to patients, through the wards’ matrons. The Friends’ teddy bears have hand-knitted sets of woollen scarves and hats generously made by donors from all over the world, including Italy. These are sold in the Friends shop as fun gift items. 



## **COFFEE MACHINES** 

In 2025 the Friends has continued to support three coffee machines for patients visiting RDAC, Radiotherapy and Cyberknife. These services provide much comfort in areas where a cup of tea, coffee or a hot chocolate can really be appreciated by patients and visitors. A coffee machine in Horder Ward was introduced in January 2025, and has been warmly welcomed by patients and their loved ones at many difficult times. 

In 2025 the overall costs of these four services increased as more machines were sponsored, more patients attended the hospital and more were taking advantage of this free service. Total costs were £15,378 against £13,074 in 2024. 


## **WEDDINGS AND BIRTHDAYS** 

## **MAKING MEMORABLE OCCASIONS** 

Our Vice-Chair Sarah Phipps would describe this service as being a fairy godmother, sprinkling joy and happiness, helping to give patients and families a sense of normality in very special circumstances. 

In 2025 we arranged several memorable occasions for a number of patients and their loved ones: from an 80 birthday celebration in Horder Ward with cakes and fizz, for a long-term palliative care patient, to a 70 birthday in Ellis Ward with tea and cake. 

When it comes to weddings, emotions are high and we ensure the bride and groom can share a memorable moment, with ‘all the bells and whistles’. The Friends provide a bridal bouquet, buttonholes, champagne, tea and coffee, sandwiches, and a wedding cake. We also take a few photographs, which we then share and present in a frame. In 2025 we organised two weddings, in Horder Ward and Critical Care Unit.

## **LITTLE EXTRAS THAT** 

## **MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE** 

Blankets brighten up the patient’s room, the bed and can give a sense of home comfort during a hospital stay. The skandi woven blankets are made of recycled cotton and the Friends have a selection of colours they are given on an ad-hoc basis. 





Over the year the Friends’ teddy bears have brought much joy to families with young children and comfort to patients at difficult times. 

Denture kits have also been a very welcome and new addition, available in wards. You would be surprised by the number of patients that forget to pack a denture box and to bring cleaning tablets, so the Friends have created this useful kit, free of charge. 

Emergency Toiletry Kits were reintroduced in 2025 by the Friends in Chelsea. These packs contain a variety of first necessities, very 

## **NEW ART PACKS** 

welcomed by patients when facing with an unexpected admission. They are given to patients, free of charge, and their provision was the answer to an everincreasing demand by many wards. 

In September 2025, in conjunction with Ben Hartley and the team of art and occupational therapists the Friends have also created and funded a new art pack for patients. 

Helen Visscher, one of the art therapists, worked with a patient throughout her 17-week stay, culminating in a small exhibition arranged by The Friends. 





## **THE DEMENTIA BOX** 

Created with the help of the Occupational Therapist team, the Friends funded the purchase of tw **o** dementia boxes, which include specialist clocks, cutlery, cups, fidgets and other activities. 




## **ICE LOLLIES FOR MEDICAL** 

## **DAY UNIT PATIENTS** 


In summer, The Friends in Chelsea funded a small freezer and began providing ice lollies for patients in MDU. The initiative proved so popular, with excellent feedback from patients and staff, that it continued throughout the year. Supervised by the Matron and MDU team, 850 lollies were distributed.

## **THE FRIENDS GIFTS** 

Over the years the Friends has created a range of branded items which remain popular with visitors and staff. Teddy bears, tote bags, china mugs, pins and pens are all sold in the Friends’ shop and are also used at events. 




## **CHRISTMAS FESTIVITIES** 

Christmas Carol singing was organised by the Chaplain Tasha Critchlow and a team of volunteers sang over two weeks, on the wards to patients. Every year a team of volunteers meet in early December to pack up the festive goodie bags to be delivered to the patients 

on Christmas day. In 2025 a team of elves were busy packing presents and on Christmas morning Jane Munday, Biffa Bradshaw and Helen Moran handed out over 95 bags to those who were in-patients. Piano players also dedicated their time on Christmas and Boxing Day to create a special atmosphere.

## **VOLUNTEERS** 

A Team of 180 active volunteers who in 2025 dedicated around 35,000 hours of service to the Friends of The Royal Marsden, Chelsea. 

Volunteers have a responsibility to be fully trained and up to date with all the training and the e-learning modules required by the Trust. 

The Friends volunteers have a high level of compliance, over 92%, and we are proud of this result as we understand that this is achieved with no small effort. 

We thank Camilla Callander, our Secretary, for co-ordinating all the e-learning activities. We are also hugely grateful to the Learning & Development team for organising supervised sessions with PCs at disposal to support our efforts. 


## **RECRUITMENT** 

Mel Bowker has continued to look after the recruitment and processing of all new volunteers. 

With regular intakes and signing up of 25 new volunteers in 2025, we have kept a healthy total number of active volunteers who are keen to join our charity in the various roles. 

## **MEMBERSHIP** 

By the end of 2025, the Friends of The Royal Marsden, Chelsea had 290 fully subscribed members, of which 180 were active volunteers, 7 Young Friends and 103 non volunteer members. 

## **SECRETARIAL TEAM** 

Camilla Callander and Mel Bowker, our two part-time secretaries, have been of tremendous support in 2025. A very busy year, where so many events and projects needed their skillful help. They are the first point of contact of the charity, its members, donors, volunteers, committee members, trustees, and the wider community of The Royal Marsden. 

They also look after the busy rotas of the shop and the cafe, as well as co-ordinating the e-learning and recruitment. They are the only two paid members of our charity and their expert support is highly valued and we are incredibly thankful for having such a wonderful team.

## **THE YOUNG FRIENDS** 

## **MARKETING & PR** 


The Young Friends is a small committee of about 7 young professionals. Between 2020 and 2025 the  Young Friends have raised over £45,000 and this money goes towards the purchase of medical equipment and services for the benefit of patients, their carers and staff at the hospital. 

The Friends manages all events through web platforms which support ticketing and event revenue reporting. Christmas cards are also sold online via the website, with the Christmas shop proving extremely popular once again and contributing to the sell-out of all cards. 

At the end of 2025 the charity also relaunched its Instagram page, @friendsrmh, helping support regular communication with followers. 

The Young Friends committee meets virtually once a month and in person once a quarter. We thank them for their passion, dedication and impressive results. 

## **OUR FINANCE SUPPORT** 

## **TREASURER & BOOK KEEPER** 

Ian Williams, Hon. Treasurer, joined the Friends in June 2023. During his three-year term he has focused on investments, financial oversight and reporting on the charity’s activities and assets. We thank Ian for his continued work, contribution and expertise. 

Since its launch in 2023, the online Grant Scheme application has continued to prove popular and easy to use, with most hospital funding requests now received through this tool linked to the Friends’ website. 

Teresa Dick, our bookkeeper, has volunteered in this role for many years and has been truly invaluable, providing regular and efficient support while ensuring all records are maintained in good order. 

Friends of The Royal Marsden, Chelsea is also a member of the Kensington, Chelsea & Westminster Chamber of Commerce, which organises regular networking events with local businesses. 

Friends of The Royal Marsden, Chelsea is a UK registered charity and is fully audited each year in accordance with the charity’s Objects & Rules. 


## **THE TRUSTEES & THE COMMITTEE** 

The Trustees of the charity meet quarterly to review financial and operational matters. Many have previously served as Chair and have supported the charity for many years, bringing valuable experience and expertise. 

The Committee meets eight times a year to review hospital funding requests and oversee the Friends’ day-to-day operations. Members lead departments, support fundraising events and regularly report on their areas while voting on funding requests.

## **FUNDRAISING & EVENTS** 

## **Volunteers Drinks Party 25 March** 

A much-loved event where volunteers came together to share memories and get to know one another, often working in different areas of the hospital. Held at the exceptional Sloane Square Hotel, the evening was generously sponsored by Suzy and John Lewis, Sally and Roger Robotham, and organised with the help of Mel Bowker and Sally. 




## **Summer Drinks Party 14 May raising over £31,000** 

This biennial sell-out event, sponsored by Savills and organised by our President Wendy de Capell Brooke, was a great success. An evening of canapés, cocktails and music at the Chelsea Gardener, it remains a wonderful tradition and an important fundraising event for The Royal Marsden. 


## **All Souls Day on 3 November** 

A special service of remembrance was held at the Chelsea Chapel during our 90th year of service, giving thanks to the many Friends who have dedicated years of support to the charity. We are grateful to Chaplain Tasha Critchlow for her support and kind help.

## **Bridge Event in November raising £17,000** 

With 153 tables sold, players once again competed in this hugely successful tournament, organised by Jane Gill and Emma Rogers, with hands provided by Zeb Stocken. Funds raised will contribute towards the purchase of an ultrasound machine for the Pain Relief Unit in Clinical Services. Congratulations to Carolyn and Alistair Roberts, winners of the 2025 tournament. 

## **Carols by Candlelight 11 December raising over £27,000** 

A full house of 350 guests attended this much-loved annual event at Chelsea Old Church, organised by Helen Moran and Theresa Hickey, with musical direction by Nicholas Harries. Drinks and canapés followed in Petyt Hall after the service led by Rev. Max Bayliss. Readers included Cally Palmer, actor Eddie Redmayne, author Simon Williams and actress Stockard Channing. The event was kindly supported by The Band Trust, Jeroboams, Great Oakley Farm, Chelsea Cloisters, and Roger and Sally Robotham. 




## **Young Friends Events** 

## **raising over £10,000 Golf Day on 11 April** 

Held at Pyrford Lake Golf Course in Surrey, this increasingly popular event welcomed 74 players for a day of golf and fundraising. The programme included breakfast, a round of golf, lunch, a silent auction and on-course competitions.

## **90TH ANNIVERSARY GALA CONCERT** 


**20 OCTOBER - RAISING OVER £70,000** This event celebrated the evolution of The Friends and the enduring legacy of The Royal Marsden and its volunteers throughout the decades. The brainchild of event organisers June Torrance, Hon. President, Emily Eban and Sarah Phipps, Vice Chair. The evening at Cadogan Hall was a journey of music and reflection as we honoured our charity’s 90-year history. From the formation of The Ladies Association in 1935 to the flourishing Friends of The Royal Marsden, Chelsea today.

The Friends would not have been able to organise such a memorable event without the generous support of our sponsors. We want to deeply thank Clarinda Kane, on behalf of The Inverforth Trust, Jeroboams, Angela Hamlin Health Care Professionals, and the many private donors who have made this special celebration possible. A video to mark the occasion was commissioned and it was sponsored by Sarah Phipps.

## **SUPPORTING EVENTS** 

## **World Enviromental Day - 5 June** 

The Friends once again supported this event, held at the Chelsea site, giving free starter seeds packs of Sunflowers, Herbs and Chilli to staff to grow at home. This event was coupled with a nice BBQ for staff Marie Stacey, Jane Farrell and Anjeli Kitchlu manning the table, giving expert advice and setting a ‘Chilli competition’. 

## **World Mental Health Day - 10 October** 

The Friends contribution was very special to the team working in psychological support and manning the table as we helped them with the planning and the purchasing of free merchandise to hand out to staff and visitors. Stress balls, notebooks, positive stickers, dark chocolate mints and T-shirts for staff manning the table. 

## **Volunteer Week - 1 - 7 June** 

In 2025 the Friends supported again this important moment, where all volunteers are thanked nationally for all the work they do. We hosted an afternoon tea and supported an awareness table by the Regency Staircase. A special thanks to Sumi Tikaram, Serena Percival, Susan Keyser and Sarah Phipps for helping with the event. 

## **Celebrate a Life – 4 December** 

A team of 10 volunteers braced the elements, outside the front of The Royal Marsden in Chelsea to support this yearly event organised by The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity. The event sees families and patients gathering together, with thousands of stars named and hunged on the Christmas tree outside the Chelsea site. The Friends supports the evening by handing out the order of service and offering refreshments of mince pies, mulled wine and hot chocolate.

Once again, both the Shop and Cafe have performed very well and continue to be highly appreciated by patients and staff. Together with the Shop Trolley, they have produced net income of over £115,000, an increase of 17% over 2024. 

The Cafe continues to grow at both the sales (up 20% in 2025) and net income (up 9%) levels. 

Fundraising events raised £156,581 in 2025 against £67,151 in 2024. This exceptional performance is principally due to the very popular biennial Summer Party which raised £31,470 and the success of the 90th Anniversary Gala Concert at Cadogan Hall which raised £70,455.

## **FINANCIAL POSITION AT THE YEAR END** 

The Friends of The Royal Marsden, Chelsea (‘FORMC’) continues to remain in a strong financial position at the year-end. Net assets increased from £1,066,397 at 31 December 2024 to £1,104,027 at 31 December 2025. 

This strong financial position will help to ensure that FORMC continues to fulfil the objects of the Charity as stated on page 3. 

Charitable spend was £369,321 compared to £142,240 in 2024 and commitments of a further £108,000 were made at 31/12/2025 towards the purchase of new medical equipment, approved by FORMC Committee. 

## **Reserves Policy** 

FORMC aims to maintain a level of funds at a minimum of £250,000 which it considers necessary to protect current activities in a way that enables the Charity to meet its responsibilities and to ensure that it continues to operate on a ‘Going Concern’ basis without risk. 

## **Structure, Governance and Management** 

FORMC is governed by the Objects and Rules as amended and altered by its members at the Extraordinary General Meeting on 29th November 2007 and effective from 1st January 2008 and further amended by the members of FORMC at the Annual General Meeting on 30t h May 2024. 

The Objects and Rules have been amended and re-registered at the Charities Commission. Trustees are nominated by the Committee of FORMC and shall comprise the President of FORMC and a minimum of three members nominated by the Committee for appointment at the Annual General Meeting. The trustees have delegated the conduct and management of the affairs of FORMC to the Committee in accordance with the Objects and Rules. 

## **Remuneration to Charity Trustees** 

FORMC paid no remuneration or other benefits in kind to a Charity trustee. 

## **Relationships with other Charities** 

The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust has its own fundraising charity which concentrates on major capital projects and the support of research funds. The trustees of FORMC consider that the income generating activities of their charity, as operated by the dedication of its volunteers, in providing highly visible services, are complementary to the work of the main hospital charity. 

A significant number of volunteers are recruited from former patients and their families and friends. FORMC meets from time to time with the Friends of other large London hospitals to discuss matters of common interest and to share ideas for providing services and fundraising.

## **Trustees Responsibilities in Relation to the Financial Statements** 

The trustees are responsible for preparing the Trustees Annual Report and the Financial Statements in accordance with applicable law and United Kingdom Accounting Standards (UK Generally Accepted Accounting Practice). 

The law applicable to charities in England and Wales requires the trustees to prepare Financial Statements for each financial year which gives a true and fair view of the situation of the Charity and of the incoming resources and application of resources of the Charity for that period. In preparing these Financial Statements, the trustees are required to: 

- **Select suitable accounting policies and then apply them consistently.** 

- **Observe the methods and principles in the Charities SORP 2019 (FRS 102)** 

- **Make judgements and estimates that are reasonable and prudent.** 

- **State whether applicable accounting standards have been followed, subject to any material departures disclosed and explained in the Financial Statements** 

- **Prepare the Financial Statements on the going concern basis unless it is inappropriate to presume that the Charity will continue in operation.** 

The trustees are responsible for keeping proper accounting records that disclose with reasonable accuracy at any time the financial position of the Charity and enable them to ensure that the Financial Statements comply with the Charities Act 2011, the Charities (accounts and reports) Regulations 2008 and the provisions of the Trust deed. They are also responsible for safeguarding the assets of the Charity and hence for taking reasonable steps for the prevention and detection of fraud and other irregularities. 

The trustees are responsible for the maintenance and integrity of the Charity and financial information included on the Charity’s website. Legislation in the United Kingdom governing the preparation and dissemination of Financial Statements may differ from legislation in other jurisdictions.

We have been appointed as auditor under section 145 of the Charities Act 2011 and report in accordance with
the Ael and relevant regulations made or having effect thereunder.
Our objectives 8re lo obtain reasonable assur8nce about whether the financial statements as a whole are free
from material misslatemenl, whether due to fraud or error, and to issue an Auditor's report that includes our
opinion. Reasonable assurance is a high level of assurance, bul is not a guarantee that an audit conducted in
accordance with ISAS IUKI will a￿layS delect a material misstatement when il exists. Misstatements can arise
from fraud or error and are considered material if, individually or in the aggregate, they could reasonably be
expected lo influence the economic decisions of users taken on the basis of these financial statements.
Irregularities, including fraud, are instances of non-compliance with 18WS and regulations. We design
procedures in line with our responsibilities, outlined above, to deleel material misstatements in respeel of
irregularities, including fraud. The extent to which our procedures are capable of delecling irregularities,

We gained an understanding of the legal and regulatory framework applicable to the eharity and the industry in
which it operates, and considered the risk of acts by the charity that We￿ contrary to appliable laws and
gulalions, including fraud. We discussed with the Treasurer the policies and procedures in place regarding
compliance with laws and regulations. We discussed amongst the audit team the identified laws and
regulab'ons, and remained alert lo any indications of non-complian￿.
During the audit we focused on laws and regulations which Could reasonably be expected lo give rise lo a
material misstatement in the financial statements, including, but not limited lo, the Charities Act 2011 and UK
18x legislation. Our tests included agreeing the financial statement disclosures to undedying supporting
document8tion and enquiries with management.
Our procedu￿$ in relation lo fraud included but were not limited to.. inquires of management whether they have
any knowledge of any actual, suspected or alleged fraud, and discussions amongst the audit team regarding
risk of fraud such as opportunities for fraudulent manipulation of financial statements. We determined that the
principal risks related to posting manual journal entries lo manipulate financial performance and management
bias through judgements in accounting estimates. We also addressed the risk of management override of
internal controls, including testing journals and evaluating whether there was evidence of bias by the Trustees
that represented a risk of m8teri81 misstatement due to fraud.
Because of the inherent limitations of an audit, there is a risk that we will not detect all irregularities, including
those leading to 8 material misslalement in the financial statements or non-compliance with regulation. This
risk increases the more that compliance with a law or regulation is removed from the events and transactions
reflected in the financial statements, as we will be less likely to become aware of instances of non-compliance.
The risk is also greater regarding irregularities occurring due lo fraud rather than error, as fraud involves
intentional concealment, forgery, collusion, omission or misrepresentation.

Aecounting policies
1.1 Basis of preparation
Friends of The Royal Marsden, Chelsea is an unincorporated charity registered in England. The
address of the registered offi'ce is given in the charity information in these Financial Statements.
The charity conslitules a public benefit entity as defined by FRS 102.
The Financial Statements have been prepared in accordance with Accounting and Reporting by
Charities.. Statement of Recommended Practice applicable lo charities preparing their accounts in
accordan￿ with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland
issued in October 2019, the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the United Kingdom and
Republic of Ireland IFRS 1021, the Charib'es Act 2011, and UK Generally Accepted Accounting
Practi￿.
The Financial Statements are prepared on a going cOn￿M basis under the historical cost
convention, modified to include certain items at fair value. The Financial Statements are presented
in sterling which is the functional currency of the charity and rounded to the nearest £.
The significant accounting policies applied in the preparation of these Financial Slalements are set
out below. These policies have been consistentiy applied lo all years presented unless otherwise
ststed.
Friends of the Royal Marsden Chelsea meets the definition of a public benefit entity under FRS 102.
Assets and liabilities are initially recognised al historical cost or transaction value unless otherwise
ststed in the relevant accounting policy.
1.2 Fund Accounting
Unrestricted Funds are funds that are available for use at the discretion of the Trustees lo advance
the general objectives of the charity and that have not been designated for other purposes.
There was one Restricted Fund, the WL Campbell-Paterson Will Trust, under which the charity is
required to use all income from the Trust lo provide medical equipment lo The Royal Marsden NHS
Foundation Trust. The restricted fund was made unrestricted during 2024 following a review of the
initial will from the donor.

1.3 Accounting Policies
INCOMING RESOURCES.
All incoming resources are included in the Statement of Financial Activities when the charity is
entitled to the income and the amount can be measured with sufficient ￿liabIlity. Legacies are

the Trustees, Annual Report. Investment income is included in the financial statements when

RESOURCES EXPENDED..
All expenditure is accounted for on an accruals basis and included under expense categories that
aggregate costs for allocation lo activities. Where costs cannot be direclly allributed to particular
aclivilies, they have been alloe8ted on a basis consislenl with the use of the resources.
VALUE ADDED TAX..
Income and expenditure are shown net of recoverable VAT.
ASSETS..
Tangible fixed assets are capitalised if they can be used for more than one year and cost more than
£500. They are slated at cost less depreciation. Depreciation is provided at rates calculated to write
off the cost of fixed assets, less their estimated residu81 value, over their expected useful lives on
the following basis".

Stocks are valued at the lower of cost or market value.

creditors are classified as basic financial instruments and measured al initial recognition at
transaction price. Cash and cash equivalents are classified as basic financi81 instruments and
comprise cash in hand and at bank. Financial liabilities are classified in accordance with the
substance of the ctsnlraclual arrangements entered into and the definitions of a financial liability.

The financial statements have been prepared on a going concern basis. The Trustees have
reviewed and considered events and conditions, and have determined that they do not create a
material uncertainty that casts significant doubt upon the Charity's ability lo eontinue as a going

OPERATING LEASE AGREEMENTS..
Rentals payable under operating le8ses are charged against income on a straight line basis over the
term of the lease.
PENSION COSTS..
The charity provides the staff with the benefit of 8 defined contribution pension which is paid into
either the charity pension scheme or a scheme of their choice. The scheme is managed: and their
assets are held, by independent manager5. The pension charge represents contributions payable
by the charity and amounted lo £45312024." £2491. Contributions payable to the charity's pension
scheme are charged in the period to which they relate.

_**The Royal Marsden, Chelsea, was established in 1851 as the first Hospital in the world for the treatment of cancer and research into the underlying causes of the disease.**_ 

_**Today we operate as a specialist cancer centre for people throughout the country and undertake world leading research to improve cancer survival globally. For the last 90 years the Friends of The Royal Marsden have provided joy, comfort and charitable support for patients and staff, making an exceptional contribution to our ability to provide the very best standard of care and environments for patients.**_ 

_**The amazing work of over 170 volunteer Friends covers everything from welcoming patients and helping with wayfinding to running The Friends’ shop and offering refreshments at ward level. Their charitable investment is also wide ranging, from funding an ultrasound machine for the Pain Unit, and fold up beds for families in our Palliative Care Ward, to essential oils for patient wellbeing.**_ 

_**The Friends work in a close-knit team with all the Hospital’s volunteers and were honoured with The Queen’s Award in 2019 for the outstanding contribution they have made over so many years. Treatment Bag is a charity that creates complimentary “bags of joy” for cancer patients. The thoughtfully curated contents are designed to provide comfort, distraction and encouragement during treatment.
