Chairmans’ Report for New Hutton Institute January 2021 for 2020

Well! what a difference a year makes at this time last year we were looking forward to a year of events with excellent support from the community.

Unfortunately, this was not to be and we were completely locked down in March due to Covid. Barbara and Brian managed to run a very successful Domino Drive in February which again proved to be very popular with the community. It seems that we will not be back to ‘normal’ for sometime.

However the news isn’t all bad as we have managed to complete some refurbishment and moved forward with future plans. The roof above the toilets and entrance has been completely renewed. This problem was worse than we first thought so therefore it is great that this work has been done and the area watertight. Internal doors have also been replaced with fire doors. The next stage is to improve the heating system which is long overdue. This is a massive outlay and has been researched in depth and discussed with several providers and experts over recent months. It is hoped that this work will be carried out as soon as possible.

Good quality crockery and cutlery has also been purchased since the new kitchen was installed. Thank you Ann

David Knowles has constantly worked throughout the year. He has given up his time to complete endless grant application forms to enable us to move forward with the refurbishment. As anyone knows these grant applications are rarely straightforward and often complex. However, David has worked tirelessly and has had a great deal of success. At this point he has managed to obtain over £50,000 in total. This is a marvellous achievement and one for which we and the community should be extremely grateful. Not satisfied with this endless task he did his best to organise a live band ‘drive in’ night. He did everything to comply with the government regulations but unfortunately South Lakeland Council had a different set of regulations which after numerous attempts to obtain permission and comply. It was decided that the additional costs made the event not viable. Few would have put in this kind of effort and dedication. Thank you David!

Owing to the increased requirements for health and safety, risk assessments etc. the committee decided that it was necessary to appoint someone with this in mind. Martyn Welch kindly accepted this position with a view to examining these issues. This will be on going in the future but at the moment everything is on hold. Martyn did put in place the necessary covid restrictions regarding the institute but we cannot hold any events at the moment.

Raymond Gibson has decided to retire from the committee after many years. He has said that he is still willing to help out if necessary. Both Raymond and Anne have always been willing pleasant individuals and have been an asset on many occasions and they will certainly be missed.

Ian Mason has had a very tough year dealing with Alisons’ illness but thankfully he is happy to continue as he is also a valued member of the committee. We certainly wish them both a happier 2021!

As on any committee lots of unseen tasks and help is needed and often goes unnoticed but rest assured this is appreciated by everyone.

This year has been difficult in many ways but we are looking forward to moving onwards and upwards in the right direction to improve the institute for the whole community.
