TRUSTEES’ ANNUAL REPORT
FOR THE YEAR TO 31 DECEMBER 2020
The World Ploughing Organisation was founded in 1952 and is a registered charity, number 221603. Its address is c/o Saint & Co., Unit 7b, Lakeland Business Park, Cockermouth, Cumbria.
The Charity's Trustees during the year to 31 December 2020 were –
| Mr C Millar | - | Chairman |
|---|---|---|
| Mr J Sache | - | Vice Chairman |
| Mr J Hill | - | Deputy Vice Chairman |
The objects of the charity are: -
-
a) To foster and preserve the art and improve the skill of ploughing the land.
-
b) To promote World Championship Ploughing Contests.
-
c) To provide for demonstration work and trade displays.
-
d) To urge the development and adoption of improved techniques and aids to man in all branches of agriculture.
-
e) To foster a vigorous spirit of co-operation and enterprise in producing food for an increasing world population.
-
f) By these means to encourage fellowship and understanding amongst the peoples of all races, nationalities and of different affiliations.
-
g) To support and co-operate with other charitable bodies or associations in the furtherance of these objects.
The charity is staffed by one full time officer assisted by members of the Board, the Hon, Treasurer and the Trustees.
The 66[th] World Ploughing Contest was held in USA, which, as with previous contests, proved very successful.
The Organisation's excess income over expenditure for the year amounted to £33,971 and as there are sufficient reserves it is considered that the Organisation continues to be financially sound.
The Organisation has to retain such reserves in the event of any member organising the annual championship becoming insolvent or unable to meet in full its financial obligations regarding the contest.
The 2020 World Ploughing Contest was due to take place in Russia in 2021 followed by the 2021 Contest to be held in Ireland but both have been postponed due to COVID-19.
The annual World Contest continues to be popular and well supported and a worthwhile project to bring together ploughmen from around the world.

THE WORLD PLOUGHING ORGANISATION
TRUSTEES’ ANNUAL REPORT ( continued )
FOR THE YEAR TO 31 DECEMBER 2020
Responsibilities of the trustees
The law applicable to charities in England and Wales requires the Trustees to prepare financial statements for each financial year which give a true and fair view of the state of affairs of the charity and of the incoming resources and application of resources of the charity for that period.
In preparing these financial statements, the Trustees are required to:
-
select suitable accounting policies and then apply them consistently;
-
observe the methods and principles in the Charities SORP:
-
make judgements and estimates that are reasonable and prudent;
-
prepare the financial statements on the going concern basis unless it is inappropriate to presume that the charity will continue in operation.
The trustees are responsible for keeping proper accounting records which disclose with reasonable accuracy at any time the financial position of the charity and enable them to ensure that the financial statements comply with the Charities Act 2011 and The Charity (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008. The trustees are also responsible for safeguarding the assets of the charity and hence for taking reasonable steps for the prevention and detection of fraud and other irregularities.
The attached accounts comply with the current statutory requirements and this report, together with the Accounts were approved by the Trustees at a meeting of Trustees held on 27 September 2021.
Signed on behalf of the Trustees

THE WORLD PLOUGHING ORGANISATION
INDEPENDENT EXAMINER’S REPORT TO THE TRUSTEES OF
THE WORLD PLOUGHING ORGANISATION
FOR THE YEAR TO 31 DECEMBER 2020
I report on the unaudited accounts of the Charity for the period to 31 December 2020 which are set out on pages 4 to 5.
This report is made solely to the Charity’s Trustees, as a body in accordance with section 145 of the Charities Act 2011 and regulations made under section 154 of that Act. My work has been undertaken so that I might state to the Charity’s Trustees those matters I am required to state to them in an Independent Examiner’s Report and for no other purpose. To the fullest extent permitted by Law, I do not accept or assume responsibility to anyone other than the Charity and the Charity’s Trustees as a body, for my work or for this report.
Respective responsibilities of trustees and the independent examiner
The Charity’s Trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts. The Charity’s Trustees consider that the audit is not required for the year under section 144(2) of the Charities Act 2011 (the 2011 Act) does not apply and that an independent examination is needed. It is my responsibility to:
-
examine the accounts (under Section 145 of the 2011 Act);
-
to follow the procedures laid down in the General Directions given by the Charity Commission (under section 145(5)(b) of the 2011 Act); and
-
to state where particular matters have come to my attention.
Basis of independent examiner’s report
My examination was carried out in accordance with the general directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from you as Trustees concerning such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently, no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a ‘true and fair view’ and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below.
Independent examiner’s statement
In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention:
-
(1) which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in any material respect the requirements:
-
(a) to keep accounting records in accordance with section 130 of the 2011 Act; and
-
(b) to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and to comply with the accounting requirements of the 2011 Act
have not been met; or
- (2) to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
