The trustees present their report along with the financial statements of the Charlty for the year ended 5 April
2021.
CONSTITUTICN AND OBJECTS
The Trust wa¢ created by a Deed of Detlaiation of Trust made by Michael Leo Mèrsh on 18 August 1958. Mr
Marsh died in 1993 and the Trust was named in his Will as the residuary beneficiary of his estate. Mr Marsh's
wife died in 2,JOI and she had a life interest in a fund which reverted to the Charity on her death. These funds
were added cffl 30 January 2002.
The Deed projides that the Trust Fund shall be held by the Trustees 'upon trusl to pay or apply the income of
the Trust Fund and such part5 of the capsta1 thereof.. as they shall from time to tlme thlnk lit to or for such
charitable Sn5tltutlons and charltable purp05e5 and In such shares and proportions as.. the Trustees shall from
time to time li their absolute discretion determine." The Deed also provides that the Trust shall be known as
"The Michael Marsh Charitable Trust".
ORGANISATION
The Trustees who have served durlng the year and slnce the year end are Set out on page l. The Trustees have
the power of appolntln8 new trustees. The Trustees meet at approxlmately 4 times a year to conslder
appllcation5.
When a new trustee is appointed, they will be briefed on their legal obligations under the charity and company
law and Informed of the Charlty's memorandum and artlcles of assoclatlon, the declslon-making process and
the financial FOSltlon. Any relevant tralnlngls provlded as requlred dependlng on the needs of the individual
trustee.
The day to da'i managernent of the charity 15 carried out by the Clerk to the Trust, by whom all application5 for
grants are co-jrdlnated and presented to the Tru5tee5, together wlth all flnanclal Informatlon at Trustees,
meetlngs.
OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES FOR THE PUBLIC 8ENEFIT
The Trustee5 confirm that they have referred to the guldance contalned In the Charlty Commlssion's general
Éuldance on public benefit when reviewlng the Trusvs alms and objectives and In plannlng future actlvities and
settlng the grant makin8 policy for the year.
ACHIEVEMENTS
The Trustee5 awariled grants totalllng £80,612 duTin8 the course of the finantial year, listed Indivldually on
pages 12-16.
GRANT-MAKIYG POLICY
The Trustees, policy re8arding donatlons is as follows..
l. Grants ar? rnade to charities working in areas of Birmingham, Staffordshire, Worcestershire,
Warwickshire, Coventry, Wolverhampton and associated towns in the Black Country.
2. The TrUSt￿e$ do not consider application5 for 511PPQrt from individuals, although they will consider
applicaticns submitted by charitable institutions on behalf of individuals.

The Trustees do not look to contribute to operating costs that could be met out of State resources.

5. The Trustees seek to make a rou8hly equal division of funds between charlties concerned with old people,
children, the disabled, the poor and educatlonal needs.
RESERVES POLICY
In the Ilght of letters of wlshe5 wrilten by Mr Marsh during his lifetlme, the Trustees consider the investments
and cash transferred to the Charity by Mr Marsh, his estate and Mrs Marsh's fund to be expendable
endowment. The Trustees alm to spend all current income each year. The Trustees do not consider It
ppropriate to hold any level of Income re5erve5. Endowment reserves at 5, Aprll 2021 were £2,999,504

INVESTMENT POLICY ANO PERFORMANCE
The Tiustees have wlde Inve5tmenl powers. These are Set out In the Trust Deed as follows..
'Money liable to be invested hereunder may be paid or applied in the purchase of or in lendin8 upon the
security of any form of property whatsoever or wheresoever a5 if the Trustees were absolute owners thereof
and whether or not the makln8 of su¢h payment or appllcation amounts strlctly to the Investment of the
money 50 pald or applied.
The Cha-itls investment strategy 15 to maintain a balance between income generatlon and eapltal growth.
The Tructee5 accept a moderate level of rlsk In pursulng this objective and this level of risk is defined in the
a8reement with the Charity'5 investment manager5.
As at 5 Aprll 2021, the portfolio was valued at E3,161.814 Including cash held wlth the investment manager.
Within tiis year, there were withdrawals amounting to a total value of £160,562. After taking this into
account, the portfollo rose by 35.67% compared to the FTSE 100 Index whlch rose by 24.41%.
The income 8enerated by the investment has fallen, this may be due to the situation re8ardin8 COVIO-19 and
the Impact It has had on the economv.
RISK MANAGEMENT
The Trusiees have revlewed the majoT rlsks to which the Charlty Is exposed. In partlcular those relating to
operati￿S and finances. and are satisfied that the 5VStems are In place to mltlgate exposure to those rlsks.
The major potential risks are theft, losses due to bad investments and fraudulent applications.
The Charitvs investments are managed by a reputable firm of invÈstment managers. currently Canaccord
Genuity Wealth Management and the Trustees have an agreement in place with them which sets out the
term5 upon whiih they manage the investments and a detailed Statement of Guidance which sets out the
Trustees, investment policy and attitude towards the risk and risk management. Canaccord Genuity Wealth
ManaÈement report quarterly on 30 June. 30 September. 31 December and 31 March respectively.
Cash is held in three places (all in the name of the Charity). Trustee5' accounts at The Royal 8ank of Scotland
nd a Deposit Account at Canaccord Genuity Wealth Management. No cash 15 held and lund5 ale only paid out
by cheque and all three Trustees, signatures are required on all cheque5.

Re8arding the 8rant making procedure. applications are reviewed by the Trustees on a quarterly b3515.
Cheque5 are then drawn in favour of the 5ucce55ful applicant5 and clrculated between the Tru5tee5 for thelr
signatures and returned to the Clerk of the trust. Each 5ucce55ful applicant 15 asked to acknowledge safe
receipt Jf their cheques. A bank reconciliation exercise is carried out on a quarterly basis before each
Tru5tee5' meeting.
TRUSTEES, RESPONSIBILITES IN RELATION TO THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS
The law appllcable to charltles in England and Wales requires the Trustees to prepare financial statements for
each fln4ncial year whlch give a true and fair view of the Charlty's financlal activltles during the year and of Its
financia position at the end of the year. In preparing those financlal statements, the Trustees are required to:
select sultable accountln8 pollcies and then apply them conslstentlv..
make judgements and estimates that are reasonable and prudent.,
state whether appllcable accountlng standards and statements of recommended practlce have been
followed subject to any departure5 dlsc105ed and explalned In the linanclal statements., and
prepare the flnanclal statements on the going concern basls unless It Is Inapproprlate to presume that
the Charlty wlll contlnue In buslness.
The Trustees are responslble for keepln8 accountln8 records whlch dlsclose wlth reasonable accuracy at any
lime the flnancial posltlon of the Charlty and enable them to ensurè that the flnanclal statements comply with
the Char tie5 Att 2011. They are responsible for safeguardlng the assets of the Charlty and hence for taking
fea5tsnable steps for the prèventlon and detectlon ol fraud and other Irregularlties.

I report on the financial statements of the charity for the year ended 5 April 2021, which are set out on pages 7
to 16.

1451bl of the 2011 Act.

al Basls of Preparatlon
These firancial statements have been prepared in accordante with the Statement of Recommended Practice
for Charities ISORP IFRS 102 Section IAII, in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard IFRSI 102
Section IA and the Charities Act 2011. These financlal statements are prepared undèr thÈ historical cost
convention, as modified by the revaluation of listed investments to market value. The Michael Marsh
Charltab e Trust meets the definltion of a public benefit entity under the Charitie5 SORP.

The Trus-.ees con51der that there are no materlal uncertalnties about the Trusys ablllty lo contlnue as a 8olng
concern.
Wlth respect to the next reportlng perlod, the m05t slgnlflcant aieas of uncertabnty that affect the carrylng
value of assets held by the Trust are the level of investment return and the performance of Investment

A statement of Cash Flows ha5 not been prodvced as the charity is within the small charity thresholds under

Income Is Included In the flnancial statements on the accruals basls, and 1$ 8r0s5 01 any tax recoverable. All
Income arose in the Unlted Kingdom.
Expendlture
Expendlture is recorded on the accruals basls. The cost of irrecoverable value added tax Is Included wlth the
expense i-.em to which it relate5. The administration and management expenses represent the cost of the
general administration function5 of the Charity includin8 the cost of administering the grant giving process.
Grants payable are recognised as liabilities when they have been approved by the trustees. The investment
advisors, commission charge5 are Included in the investment acqui51tion c05ts/di5P05al proceeds. Governance
costs are made up of Independent Examlnerfs fees.
