LoF – July AGM 2024 – President’s Opening Remarks
Madam Mayor, Mayoress, ladies and gentlemen:
Good afternoon and welcome back to Thornton Hough for our Annual General Meeting.
For those who don’t know me, my name is Dave Adams and I am President of this womderful charitable organisation founded 70 years ago in February 1954. We are all volunteers raising funds to purchase medical equipment and other items for the Clatterbridge site, for which the NHS Hospital trust does not have a budget.
Originally we were Clatterbridge Hospital League of Friends. In the early 1960s we became Clatterbridge Hospitals League of Friends. Today we are officially launching our new branding as Friends of Clatterbridge and you will hear more about this exciting new chapter in our long life during the course of the AGM.
In December last year I was delighted to present our Merit Award to Vice President George Nelson marking an incredible 60 years as a member of the League. George and many of you present today will recall several occasions over the years where the future of the Clatterbridge site was threatened. How gratifying it is that, since our last AGM, two further theatres have been completed at the new multi-million pound Cheshire and Merseyside Surgical Centre.
Today we will learn of the various grants that the League has awarded in the past year and hear of the fundraising and other activities carried out.
Last year I promoted weekly ‘From the Archives’ articles I was posting on Facebook each week around a different aspect of the League’s history. This two year project finished on 1[st] February 2024 with the 100th in the series coinciding with our birthday. I have turned all 100 posts into laminates in 2 binders which I have
brought here today. Do please take a moment to look at them. I am hoping that they might be displayed at our various promotional events.
I have also put out a few copies of our 3 history volumes. We are not charging for these ‘per se’ but would appreciate a donation in the can on the table.
Earlier this month we lost a true stalwart of the League, Vice President Marjorie Golsby. For two decades Marjorie was our Honorary Secretary and was also responsible for countless good works as Ladies Committee Chair – a role she took over from her sister Barbara Crompton who was moving from the area. The League has been a true family concern with Marjorie’s daughter, Lindsey Lawrence, taking over the Secretary role from her. On a personal level, Marjorie was very welcoming to me when I joined the League’s Committee in 2008, on becoming Chairman of Radio Clatterbridge. She supported me at a Wiliamson Art Gallery Piano Trio Event I helped organise for both charities in my first year. Marjorie showed considerable devotion, hard work and loyalty to the League. Our sincerest condolences to Lindsey and the wider family.
My thanks as ever to our Chair Amanda, to Lindsey and John as the other Trustees and the rest of the Committee for another successful year.
I would also like to particularly acknowledge the hard work of Vice President Mark Spiers and Karen Winrow for their considerable efforts on the new branding.
We have seventy wonderful years of good works and memories to look back on but hopefully also a great future to look forward to. Thank you.
Dave Adams (President)
